Aonuma Faced Internal Pushback Against Wind Waker HD

Fight the power, Aonuma!

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD almost faced internal pushback because it was believed internally that people did not like "that Link."

Eiji Aonuma stated in a recent interview that when he began trying to move forward with Wind Waker HD, there was "a lot of pushback," because it was believed that fans of the series didn't like the young, cel-shaded version of Link. After speaking with U.S. counterparts, that idea was put to rest.

Additionally, Aonuma said that Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword were also tested for high definition remakes. However, the results of testing those games in HD "weren't really surprising," and Wind Waker stood out as the title that benefited most from the HD treatment.

Wind Waker felt so massive.  With the addition of the faster sailing, it will be even better.  I loved the underwater section (don't want to spoil anything).

Plus since Toon Link was my favorite in Brawl (waving that baton), I hope his presence on the Wii U will mean he will for sure be included in SSB Wii U/3DS.

i think a tweaked version of twilight princess running on the graphics engine from that e3 2011 demo would be glorious...

That Link? *feh*

Dat ending....  :-*

Also, the Wind Waker was *made* for Wii MotionPlus. Don't leave me hanging Aonuma!

Re-make the worst 3D Zelda? Great idea ::rolleyes::

I still going to buy this.  When it's a little discounted.  BUT

What really worries me is that I was hoping (and I'm not alone in this, I'm sure) that Gamecube games would be released at some point on the Wii U Virtual Console.  This HD re-release seems to make this somewhat unlikely.  And what in the WORLD is the reason that they're limiting Wii U VC to only NES and SNES?

AdrockJuly 04, 2013

I guess emulation as well as adding Wii U specific features like Miiverse support and off-screen play.

I want to buy Wind Waker HD, but not for $60.

GBA games are coming to Wii U later this year, and it was confirmed long ago that GameCube games are as well (I think they said N64 games will be soon too).

Finally a new topic to post this thought:

I realized the other day that I might not be ready for WW's epic final battle in HD....

I remember hearing about this a few months back, but wasn't sure if it was true or not. I also remember being very upset by it because I had heard that this meant GBA games were unlikely to be released on 3DS.

If true, that would be a baffling decision in my books.

Iwata announced that GBA games  are coming to Wii U back at a January Nintendo Direct.

Why would it?  Nintendo has been releasing NES and SNES games on the 3DS Virtual Console even though some of the same games are on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console.  I'd imagine they'll be releasing GBA games on the 3DS as well.

They're putting GBA games on WiiU because the GamePad makes a helluva original GBA.

You mean besides the fact that for over 2 years they have been saying GBA games would NOT be coming to 3DS, and have NEVER indicated they have changed their stance on that?

Ian SaneJuly 04, 2013

Realistically the Wii U and 3DS should have ONE VC and certain games are just not available for the 3DS because of hardware restrictions (I'm assuming that Cube games on the 3DS would be pretty hard).  If you had to pick one of the two systems for GBA games the 3DS would make more sense but there is no good reason why they shouldn't be on both.

In regards to Zelda, if I was in charge of Nintendo I would push back on Wind Waker HD as well, but only because I wouldn't want to waste resources on a remake when it could be put towards a new game.  The VC is for re-releases of the past, the new systems are for the future.  I'm shocked that Skyward Sword was even in the discussion as it is not even two years old.  It's also worth noting that both it and Twilight Princess are playable on the Wii U so a Wii U version would be especially pointless.  If you're going to make redundent remakes that prey on fanboys that just can't resist buying Malibu Stacy with a new hat, Wind Waker is the best choice.  While I prefer Majora's Mask, it would be more efficient for Nintendo to remake that for the 3DS since it used the same engine as Ocarina of Time and thus could re-use resources from the 3DS version of that game.

Nintendo has said a lot of things they eventually change.  Just because they won't put GBA games now doesn't mean they won't eventually.  We know the 3DS can emulate GBA games so I find it hard to believe Nintendo won't start adding them to the 3DS eventually because its more easy money for them, which is why the NES and SNES games are on both systems as well.

Except that we've been over and over this and Nintendo NEVER said that.  Ever.

"no plans" does not mean "not happening".  By any definition.

I don't know if I could disagree more with any statement (huge exaggeration). Majora's Mask was one of the best games on the N64, and is one of the best Zeldas.

nickmitchJuly 06, 2013

It's kind of bad PR to say something's not happening. Nintendo is almost always going to hedge there bets a little. To say there "aren't any plans" could still be an absolute.

If this is the case, wouldn't that make it a good candidate for a remake, so that they can fix the game's issues and make it better?

Oh that is complete bull... the e3 2011 demo borrowed so many things from Twilight Princess and it looks freaking gorgeous...

Honestly the wii u needs, although its a bit lower on the list compared to GAMES!!  a visual showcase to show that it can, you could say, tango with the big boys, that demo is extremely close to that and Nintendo just so happens to have a game that can easily be fit into that graphics engine(and has already been proven capable of handling multiple control schemes)... and its name isn't Wind Waker

But that would require actually remaking the game whereas Wind Waker is mostly just (lazy) uprezzing and a bit of GamePad functionality.

Which may or may not have been pushed from HD grading status to a full on retail release on order to expand the Wii U library. After all the #1 complaint about Wii U is lack of games.

The graphical showcase can come later, first you have to get more people to buy the system. Otherwise who would care if it can stand with the big boys.
