The Blue Bomber and the Animal Crossing Villager are both playable characters!

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U made its official debut appearance during the E3 Nintendo Direct.

In addition to returning characters such as Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, and Samus, the new challengers shown off were Villager, the protagonist of the Animal Crossing franchise, and Capcom's Mega Man, who fights with the powers of many classic Robot Master villains.

The 3DS version features cel-shaded graphics, while the Wii U version employs a more detailed, realistic HD visual style.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U is scheduled for release in 2014.

UPDATE: Smash Bros adds the female Wii Fit trainer to the cast of fighters.

So they haven't revealed an official title? We went from 'Melee' to 'Brawl' to ... ?

Mega Man, yes!

Pixelated PixiesJune 11, 2013

Just some random thoughts from myself.

Mega Man! What a perfect addition. Nice to see Rush and various power-ups in the mix too.

Did anyone else get the sense that when Tom Nook picked up Villager's Smash invitation that he intended to follow him? Nook needs to get paid!

I am, however, still baffled by the existence of the 3DS version (I just don't understand why anyone would want to play that series on a tiny screen).

Smash Bros has never really been my cup of tea, but I enjoy the spectacle of it and am looking forward to future announcements.

I'm going to play the 3DS version because I always have my system with me and when I'm home I barely have time to dedicate to sitting down with a console and engaging it. I think all grown up gamers eventually go portable, but I've always been a handheld maniac. I liked the hand drawn sprites against realistic backgrounds. I hope the two versions have crazy interconnectivity features.
I'm crazy excited for the Villager, when the trailer started I thought "Animal Crossing trailer" and then saw the seal on the envelope. That made me real happy.

Looks pretty good! Though the blow out of new characters was lessened and understandably so. I'm just somewhat surprised Sakurai went back on his stance about an Animal Crossing character. At the same time Animal Crossing has become a monster and ip that had to influence him.

And all though I wanted to see more new comers, if they are hidden away longer this time ultimately it will feel more rewarding to the fans.

Mega Man fans must be so happy right now that the character is being done justice in a really great game.

The art style for both looks really good and Bowser really looks like bowser! I love that color is back in the game too! Some of those scenes made Link and DK look down right scary. Hooray for Miiverse support that Sakurai will have to pay attention too!

Definitely getting hyped for this. Mega Man seems like a pretty sensible inclusion too, I'd be interested in seeing how all those Robot Masters powers work (it seems like he has quite a few options). I do hope Sonic makes the cut again this go around, especially with SEGA and Nintendo being pretty tight at the moment, and even SEGA and Capcom are getting a little buddy-buddy ("Worlds Collide" in Archie Comics anyone?), so why not give everyone a chance to pit the Blue Blur against the Blue Bomber?

My eyes started pouring tears when I saw Mega Man.I havne't cried tears of joy in a long time...

Mega Man is without question a more logical inclusion than Snake or Sonic in Brawl. Those two were effectively mascots of rival consoles, whereas Mega Man is indelibly linked in the legacy of Nintendo with his long heritage on NES and SNES. I am excited to see how he is implemented in Smash Bros - based on the small amount of footage shown, they've certainly nailed the look of his animations (I got a kick out of his retro death explosion.)

As for the different versions, I think it was a smart decision going with a totally different art style for the 3DS version. Does make you wonder how the two games will be cross-compatible, assuming they are, which I guess is up in the air at this point.

Says who? They showed logos-- the official titles ARE: "Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS" and "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U". Granted, I wouldn't at all be shocked if the titles do get changed, but at the same time there's no reason to automatically assume they will, especially considering Nintendo's recent trend of title simplification. Until we hear otherwise, these apparently are the official names.

KDR_11kJune 11, 2013

Megaman was definitely overdue for Smash Bros inclusion.

I really wish the graphics of the 3DS game were the Wii U game, it looks great and the perfect style for Smash Brothers! Unfortunately, the Wii U version looks like Brawl, except maybe not quite as dark, but still, it's way too sterile. Plus, every stage looked like Brawl!

Not a good sign, not a good sign at all...

I definitely like the art style of the 3DS game and an HD version of it in the Wii U game would have been great. Still, I also like the art style of Smash Bros. for Wii U which seems somewhere between Melee and Brawl. It has more detail than Melee, but doesn't go for super realistic textures like Brawl (e.g. Mario's ridiculously detailed denim). Maybe it's the palette like you said.

The Mega Man part was just awesome. A very welcome addition to the series.

Turbo857June 11, 2013

Game looks like it's coming along great but where's the playable Lil Mac announcement?

Pixelated PixiesJune 11, 2013

Which Fire Emblem characters do you all want to see?

Personally I want to see Vaike included, but only if Reyn from Xenoblade is included as his alternate costume.

Yeah, it's definitely not as bad, I can probably live with it after some time. The gameplay was my biggest issue with Brawl anyway, and it'll probably be a while before I get a good idea of how the new one plays and what modes it has.

AdrockJune 11, 2013

That's my concern as well. The gameplay was Smash Bros. but something felt off. I definitely didn't like Brawl as much as Melee or the original.

OblivionJune 11, 2013

You see, Brawl was my first SSB game, so I'd love if it stayed in that sort of direction. And I also love the more realistic textures, especially now that we're on an HD console. Keep the cell shading for a system that couldn't handle it otherwise.

Seriously, man, you and me are fucking done professionally.

3DS comparable to Wii, if not more powerful. That said, 3DS can handle the more realistic textures. Sakurai's team just decided to go the cel shaded route.

I'm so sorry I disappointed you. :P

Anyone have a time machine I can borrow(Robo)? I want this game NOW! and yes, I would like the Wii U version just because of the graphics, and before you start yelling at me for caring about graphics, I'm getting it for the 3DS no matter what, think of all the StreetPass features...(this is where you look up into space, think for a bit, then start to drool when you imagine some of the possible features)

LouieturkeyJune 11, 2013

I was also one that had some tears when I saw that Megaman was announced.  I laughed at myself afterwards because it's kind of a stupid thing to get teared up about.  Still, even more excited for this game now and will probably get a Wii U around the time it is released.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.  The trailer for MegaMan's announcement was epic, they nailed the way he looks IMO, and the use of classic boss selection music, as well as the soundtrack change when he started using boss power-ups.

I wasn't enthused about the idea of Megaman in the game before, but that trailer sold me 100%.

Scatt-ManJune 12, 2013

Here's what I'm thinking; There's no way they'd create these elaborate CG clips for the sole purpose of the character reveals. I'm guessing they're created for another Subspace Emissary-type dealio, and I'm okay with this.

AdrockJune 12, 2013

Possibly, but the original Brawl trailer had a lot of CG that never showed up in the final game.

CaterkillerMatthew Osborne, Contributing WriterJune 12, 2013

There is a full video of Sakurai using Mega Man to battle a Nintendo Rep using Mario. Not a single trip up. It's not guaranteed but they just may have cut that silly feature out of to game.

And I couldn't tell in the trailer but the game is certainly faster than Brawl. It's not Melee fast but its certainly faster paced than Brawl.

i love the animal crossing character, that is the most awesomely stupid moveset ever

EasyCureJune 13, 2013

Awesomely stupid indeed; the dude can store projectiles in his pocket!

Regarding a possible subspace mode.. I was looking at the trailer again and while I believe the Wii U footage is just custom scenes for the trailer, like Brawl, I think there may be an adventure mode in the DS version.

I can't link the video now (lazy/mobile) but there's a clip of Mario jumping by himself in what I originally thought was a dkcr inspired level, but the design felt off and didn't match anything from other series known to be represented in the game. What really stood out as odd was simply the fact that the scene only shows Mario and no other character.

I'll link the clip when I'm home..
