These additions, plus free downloadable quests, coming in April.

The Wii U version of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will receive a patch in April that adds Off-TV play and cross-region online multiplayer to the game. The game, originally announced to be region-locked in multiplayer, will now allow players in Europe and North America to hunt together.

Capcom also announced that the game will be supported for several months after its release with a series of free downloadable quests. The game will release in North America March 19, followed shortly by a European release on March 22.

Off-TV Play and Cross-Region Online Play Coming to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on Wii U

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate to receive April software update and free of charge downloadable quests.

28th February 2013 – Capcom® and Nintendo have today confirmed that following the 22 March release of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for Wii U™, a software update will be released in April as a response to Capcom community feedback.

The software update will add online cross-region functionality, allowing European and North American gamers to play together online in up to four-player battles*. Monster Hunters will also be able to play the game using just the Wii U GamePad without the need for a TV screen as the software update makes the title compatible with off-TV play.

Capcom will be continuing to support Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for several months after release with additional free of charge downloadable quests. The first quest will be available at launch.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate releases across Europe on 22 March for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS™, both at retail as well as on Nintendo eShop.

This will be huge for further adoption here in the west.  I'm glad they are deciding to release this patch shortly after release vs. months down the road when hype for it has died down.

Sweet.

Hurrah! Maybe there will be cross-region play with Japan next?

I feel bad that I'm rewarding Capcom for listening to fans and giving us what we want by giving them 40 fewer dollars because I no longer have a reason to buy the 3DS version.

Are you sure?

Anyways, this good news for everyone.  Especially me.

Now in this good news I'm a little let down by "Capcom also announced that the game will be supported for several months after its release with a series of free downloadable quests."

That just seems a little short.

What is so bad about that? They are saying they will provide free downloadable quests for several months. I think you are incorrectly assuming they will only have the servers up for that period of time.

Yeah, that's specifically regarding the quests. Sorry if I worded that poorly.

No, I actually mean the quests.  Considering we probably won't get Monster Hunter 4 for over a year from now.  New quests longer then the first few months would be very beneficial.  It just seems short.

I thought it already had off-TV play...?

Interesting how they're actually listening to the people clamoring for the region restriction lifted. Does this include Australia as well?

GKFebruary 28, 2013

Ok, -now- I'm upset that I can't afford a WiiU right now. Can finally hunt with my European friends.

I understand that they'd fairly recently confirmed ("confirmed") the opposite.

Yeah they just recently announced that there would be no OFF TV play because they designed the game to be played using two screens.  Great to see a company listening to the fans of the game and giving the fans what they want for a change.

Hard to give them too much credit over adding features that ought to be there in the first place, but nevertheless, this is a game-changer for me. Now that I'll be able to play with all my friends in North America, this has become a much more likely purchase for me, come March 22.
