Update: We have a vague description on what the update does.

Update: According to Nintendo's website the update (version 2.1.0 U) further improves system stability and causes other minor adjustments to enhance the user experience

A new firmware update is now available for download onto your Wii U.

The update has just become available and comes in at a size of 593 megabytes. Once our updates have finished installing, we will be able to report on what exactly it contains. The update, given its size, may finally unlock Nintendo TVii functionality.

Damn, my download started out as 18 minutes remaining, and it's now over 2 hours remaining.  How do you cancel it and let it go in the background again?

SorenDecember 04, 2012

It has to be TVii.

I just hope one day updates will be less than half a gig. My connection sucks and I live in an area that has waaaay too many power outages. I'm scared every time I download these updates.

But really...593MB for stability and minor interface adjustments???!?!!

KITT 10KDecember 04, 2012

If it's gonna take over an hour again I'm gonna have to wait till the weekend then so I have time.

Disco StuDecember 04, 2012

I don't know why it would be so large but I'm guessing it's related to all the system crashes that are widely reported (mine hasn't, though).

BlackNMild2k1December 04, 2012

My Wii U says no update available.

Do I need to exit my game first?

A lot of binary files probably have to changed. Even if a binary file only had a few changes, you still have to re-download the entire binary, you can't really download separate parts of it.

NeoThunderDecember 04, 2012

I wanna know if it improves USB hard drive support. When I tried using one it ended up locking up a lot.

MysticGohanDecember 04, 2012

Hey BnM, have you tried going to the eShop? That will also prompt you to the update. :)

JdlbkDecember 04, 2012

I seriously hope it's TVii. Will know in 9 minutes.

If its not TVii then I hope it makes the interface move quicker and snappier.

But I seriously hope it's TVii.

NeoThunderDecember 04, 2012

WiiU Pro controller support for Virtual Console games!!!
A man can dream can't he...

EyothrieDecember 04, 2012

I'll be happy if the update speeds up menu navigation and fixes the hard locking

JdlbkDecember 04, 2012

Update done. Not TVii.

No noticeable changes. Big update for little changes. Disappointedmits not TVii.

JdlbkDecember 04, 2012

Apps still slow to start. Not sure what changes were made. I suppose eshop loaded a little faster.

TizonaDecember 04, 2012

Could you always look at 3DS Eshop games and videos on the WiiU Eshop? I just noticed  listings for tons of 3DS retail and Eshop games on the WiiU shop, some with video and screen shots.

TruenoGTDecember 04, 2012

Downloaded pretty quick for me (30 minutes maybe?) and installing now (68%)...

BlackNMild2k1December 04, 2012

It appears it started downloading in teh background sometime after I first checked.

Retro DeckadesDecember 04, 2012

My update started at 30% and only took about 10 minutes. I'm pretty happy with that.

Disco StuDecember 04, 2012

Well, that was anticlimactic.  I guess there's always the chance that the real fruits of this update won't come to bear until the Nintendo Direct tomorrow.  We shall see.

TizonaDecember 04, 2012

So what are the chances, TVii was in here and they just have to "turn it on" and maybe they will do that tomorrow? Wishful thinking?

Same here. Didn't get a prompt. Decided to check the download manager and there it was.

We already know it was delayed, so highly unlikely.

AVDecember 04, 2012

Don't really notice anything new or different after the update . I guess tomorrow Reggie will spill the beans on what's new

Delayed again? I must have missed that. The TVii app on WiiU still says "Coming December". Oh well, at least it seems like the menu's run faster, and if there are no more freezing issues, I'm happy.

ShyGuyDecember 05, 2012

I keep getting disconnected. Glad it doesn't start at zero on every retry.

BlackNMild2k1December 05, 2012

I want to lean towards the stealth TVii Update being activated during tomorrows N Direct,

Didn't Nintendo do that previously with something on the 3DS?

Makes sense to not overload the servers with everyone trying to download and use the update the moment its officially announced, by getting a chunk of the downloads out of the way tonite and beat the rush.

ToothsawDecember 05, 2012

1. TVii service is ALREADY on the Wii U. We just have to wait it's activated SERVER SIDE, so it's no use thinking that this update could have enabled it.

2. Hard lock when using external drives are not caused by lack of compatibility, but lack of information from Nintendo. You have to use external HDDs WITH DEDICATED POWER SUPPLY. The Wii U is capable of powering external HDDs through the USB cable only in few occasions. If you have an external USB 3.0 HDD it probably won't work and/or hard lock the console. Some USB 2.0 external HDDs powered though USB cable can work, better if they use a Y-cable to drain power from TWO USB ports. But to be sure, I'd go with an external power supply for the HDD. I'm using an old 80GB USB 2.0 HDD powered through a Y-cable at the moment and it works fine, but I think I'll buy a 1TB HDD with dedicated power soon.

StrawHousePigDecember 05, 2012

Is it possible to send a message through the friends list yet? Seriously, who the hell left that out? Didn't anybody use this thing before they sent it out the door? Sheesh!

AdrockDecember 05, 2012

The estimated time left thing doesn't mean anything until the last few minutes. It kept jumping around for me. All in all, the update and installation took maybe 40 minutes, give or take a few.

RazorkidDecember 05, 2012

You can send messages to friends from the friends list. As for the update, its fixed a problem I've had with my harddrive. I have a 1TB USB 3.0 dedicated power external that, once the system is booted and I'm logged in, wouldn't immediately recognize the drive. I would have to go to system settings and then just back out to the main menu and all my digital games and drive are there. This caused many problems before because if I didn't ''manually'' get the drive to be recognized, any disc games I played would be missing saves or start from very old ones. Now once I log in, its instantly recognized and all my stuff is present.

Still not seeing it. Do they have to be online? Don't see it on MiiVerse profiles, either. Lame.

Other gripes: MiiVerse closes if you press the home button.

If you press a game pic on the eShop front page you are taken to a list populated by just that game rather than the game info page. WTF? The list thing makes sense for categories and actual lists, but come on.

The video icon in these lists should be clickable.

And the rest.

AdrockDecember 06, 2012

I wish you could Yeah! a picture from the plaza instead of having to open Miiverse. It would also be nice to save those pictures. Some of the stuff people draw is amazing.

There is a message icon on the left when you open Miiverse. Between communities and notifications.

StrawHousePigDecember 06, 2012

Yes but that is not the friends list.

Honestly I don't remember what the messages tab looked like before I'd sent any messages. It's easy to send messages there, but the message sending process could be a lot more useful if it were possible in more places. Places that make sense.

ShyGuyDecember 06, 2012

Hit the home button, click the friends list and select a friend. Start a conversation.

StrawHousePigDecember 06, 2012

I don't have that button. Do they have to be online? Whoa, deja vu... :P

ShyGuyDecember 07, 2012

The home button is on the bottom of your Wii U pad. EVERYONE HAS IT

StrawHousePigDecember 07, 2012

The "start conversation" button.

ShyGuyDecember 07, 2012

RAZZLE FRAZZIN I want to blow your house down!

do:
1.In Miiverse task-bar, choose "Messages."
2.A list containing your friends will be shown.
3.Press the arrow button next to the friend you want to send a message to.
4.This will show your messaging history with that specific friend.
5.Press "Write Message" in the bottom-right cornerto write a message to that friend.

OblivionDecember 07, 2012

There's a slight possibility that he is successfully trolling you.

StrawHousePigDecember 07, 2012

No I'm not "trolling" at all. Just stating the fact that you CANNOT send a message from the friends list. I see people bringing up Miiverse and its message tab, but that is not the friends list. Why I have to say this *again* is beyond me.

There are lots of things that could and should have been made simpler and more sensible. Sending a message is one of the examples I gave. People wanna get all huffy about it that's their problem.

ShyGuyDecember 07, 2012

little pig, little pig, let me in.
