The Nintendo 3DS is the fastest selling Nintendo handheld to reach this milestone.

The Nintendo 3DS has reached 6 million units sold in its native land of Japan, Famitsu.com recently reported. Based on sales data by Enterbrain, the system was able to reach the sales milestone during its 65th week at retail.

The whole sales total from launch is 6,017,206 units. Based on the same data, the 3DS is the first Nintendo handheld to reach 5 million in such a short amount of time.

This is the DS all over again except faster. What I mean by that is - it had a pretty awful first year, followed by utter domination.

Nintendoom3d.

All the haters can go suck themselves.

There are no haters here. That makes the constant whining about them extremely annoying.

OblivionMay 27, 2012

I can't whine about things that don't exist here? I find people who think they know what I'm talking about extremely annoying.

Maybe not here but have you visited the rest of the internet?  Most other gaming websites and message boards were filled with people declaring doom when the 3DS sales were poor last summer and how Nintendo would be developing for mobile phones soon.

Then go complain about them in those places, where the complaint is relevant. I come to this site so I don't have to run into people like that, and that gets ruined when people whine about them incessantly.

No thanks. Thanks for the offer though.

I'm curious how the 3DS has sold by comparison in the West, especially given how extremely reluctant Western developers have been to support the 3DS.  Japanese sales are nice...I guess, but the software industry has been increasingly shifting to Western-dominance for quite some time now.  I also find it increasingly hard to care about the Japanese market considering some of the titles we see on the Top 20 charts every week, but that's just me.  Maybe we'll find out at E3 how well the 3DS has done elsewhere.

5.99 million shipped to America as of March 31st, 2102, according to Nintendo's own financial report.

Thanks, but as people are so fond of reminding us whenever Sony (especially) does that, Shipped units != sold units.  Shipped numbers mean very little.  I'm curious what the hard sold numbers are, because they have to be comparatively low for Western devs to be ignoring the 3DS like they have (and the Vita as well to some extent).

No they don't. See: Wii.

I'm not sure that's a valid comparison.  The Wii released following a Nintendo console that was not only not successful for 3rd parties, but just didn't move (relative to the competition) many hardware units in general.  While we look back on it now badly in hindsight, it made sense to not support the Wii strongly early on.  The 3DS, however, was following one of the most successful (if not themost successful) game platforms of all time.  At least early on (before we knew how badly the 3DS performed in its first few months), we should have seen more Western developer support than we did.

Did western companies make much of anything for the DS? I thought that they preferred home systems.

Looking over these lists, it seems like they did.  From the looks of it, it's a lot of sports games and licensed crap, but it's still Western developer support.

Chozo GhostMay 27, 2012

Its still too early to judge the 3DS for its developer support. I don't think the DS was any better off at this point in its life, either. The thing to keep in mind is games take awhile to develop so just because we aren't seeing much right now doesn't mean there isn't a lot of stuff in development. E3 will lift a lot of veils and we will see things a little bit more clearly.
