Flashcarts are blocked, but awesome advantages await!

Super Mario 3D Land will come preloaded with a mandatory system firmware update for the 3DS.

Aside from the usual new anti-piracy measures to block illegal flashcarts from working, the 3DS Friends List is getting a nifty overhaul for good measure as well.

Firstly, a button will be added that allows players to join their friends' online game sessions (provided the game has online content, of course). Next, buddies who are currently online will be shuffled to the front of the list for easy access. Furthermore, users will be able to quick-scroll through the Friends List while holding left or right.

It should be noted that this is not the same firmware update that's scheduled to come later this month, which will feature updates to StreetPass, friend chat applications, 3D video recording, online file sharing and other benefits - but it seems like a worthy and useful update to have.

Super Mario 3D Land will flutter-jump onto U.S. shelves next week on November 13.

Thank God! Shuffling through tons of friends just to see the ones who are on is a chore and being able to join them online during a game in play is an awesome and very needed feature. Currently playing RE Mercs (its a blast) and this little addition would make on the fly coop much easier.

YES!!!!!! It's nice to see Nintendo getting ready for the onslaught of online games coming out for the system.

Cool! I goota go back to the NWR 3DS Friend Code thread and add all those folks I haven't yet (sorry guys). There'll be a point to it all now.

Yeah...
I tend to only remember when I don't have internet access.

Later this month? The last I heard it was scheduled for tomorrow (November 4). Has something changed?

There's still the online update (which according to my sources is still scheduled for tomorrow in all regions other than Australia).

Don't think for a second that Nintendo is going to make it that easy to avoid their updated anti-piracy measures. I'm sure they're just including the bare minimum updates with Super Mario 3D Land to get the new anti-piracy updates on as many 3DS systems as possible.

If you resist upgrading for the new 3D video capabilities and StreetPass games, they'll still try to get you by sneaking it into all new card-based releases.

MARIO IS WATCHING-- RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!

A little late, but I'll take it. Maybe with this update I can play games like DoA more regularly with friends. Good thing it's going to be here for Mario Kart 7 though, people would be ready to kill if they couldn't get their games going.

The Nov 4th update was NEVEr guaranteed or confirmed. One source stated it than recanted, so maybe it will but more likely it won't. It's a substaintial update so I think it will be LATE November like 30th or something

I got Mario today and it immediately updated the firmware before allowing me to play it.
The update does indeed make the friends list a lot better.
I should be testing out the "hop in a game" feature later today with Danny hopefully.

Also, Mario is awesome.  ;D

Damn... I was wondering why it wasn't available yet, as these kinds of things are typically released worldwide as soon as it's made available in Japan (which is several hours ahead of us, meaning we can usually still get them the day prior to the scheduled release, as was the case with the NES Ambassador games and Four Swords).

The fact that it's still not up strongly suggests we're not getting it today... which is kind of odd considering that I'd think Nintendo would want to get the new anti-piracy measures out all at once, rather than waiting several weeks and give the hacking community the opportunity to analyze it and come up with a workaround in advance.

Update: It doesn't work with older games (Such as Mercenaries 3D) but might work with newer ones like Tetris Axis. (and most definitely Mario-Kart-7 when it comes out)

Ah well, I was kind of hoping it would work with all online games.

That sucks, I'll hold out hope until it's released worldwide along with the Nov update.
