Our red-capped hero will don a blue shell with a boomerang.

Mario will get a new power in Super Mario 3D Land, a boomerang suit, according to recently leaked official art.

The Boomerang Bro., a boomerang-enabled Koopa, debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3, and saw follow-up appearances in a variety of games, including New Super Mario Bros., Mario Super Sluggers, and Super Mario Galaxy 2. The blue boomerang was featured as an item in Super Mario Advance 4's e-Reader levels.

Additionally, official art revealed a boomerang-wielding female version of Boom Boom. Boom Boom debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3, and was shown off as a boss in Super Mario 3D Land's E3 demo.

Hey!  This is kind of a spoiler, no?  You could easily have said "new Mario power up revealed" and let us decide if we wanted to know the details or not.

I guess as official art we will see several things like this. It would be nice to have not known though.

As a child I always dreamed of a boomerang suit. Exactly like this. Now that it's here I don't know what else to dream about.

it's about time!

I remember one of the e-reader mario 3 levels you could grab the boomerang and toss it around, it was badass

Nintendo said the were gonna do DLC packs, (about damn time), with the 3DS and the Wii U, maybe this is the start of it.

SilverQuilavaOctober 07, 2011

Oh THIS is going to be insane fun. man I have been waiting for this kind of powerup.

Really? A spoiler? In a Mario game? Are you serious? Here's another one: The princess is in another castle.

RasOctober 07, 2011

It seems like Nintendo is going nuts (in a good way) with 3D Land and Kart 7.  The powerup ideas are just over the top.

I love when Nintendo introduces new koopa characters not names Bowser Jr. This new boomerang girl looks like a fine addition.

2nd to my need for Ridley and Dixie in the next smash, please please please Sakurai give us new costumes like these! They don't need to affect powers I just want to use Bowser with a Tanookie tail! Maybe we'll be able to customize looks as much as we want in the 3DS with all kinds of Nintendo universe gear.

Yeah, pretty good bet that the Tanooki tail will make it into the next Smash Bros.

That was great.

Also, if you look at the art that features the Boomerang Boom Boom-ette, you can see a Mario's statue form from the Tanookisuit of Mario 3.  I don't know if it's just a reference, or if it actually plays a part in the game we haven't seen yet.

Given that the statue is Luigi, I'd say it's something substantial. My guess is that there's a green-striped leaf that gives you stronger Tanooki powers.

Oh I see!  I had to look on a different site for a bigger image.  Awesome.

CaterkillerMatthew Osborne, Contributing WriterOctober 08, 2011

Good catch guys! I'm sure Luigi will be playable but does this mean we'll be able to turn into stone at some point?

Edit:
Not asking a Kytim type question, just trying to get people excited!

Technically it is, but most people are concerned only with story spoilers rather than gameplay spoilers. Since Nintendo games often focus on gameplay over story, things like this are pretty common. It's a shame, but these days the only way to go into a game without advance knowledge is to stay off the Internet.

AdrockOctober 10, 2011

By that logic, seeing literally anything about a game before it's in your console and you are witnesses every second for the first time is a spoiler. Better not look at the back of the box, they contain spoilers. In fact, the box art probably contains spoilers as well. There's no way to go into a game fresh without some prior knowledge otherwise you wouldn't know you wanted it. Knowing that something like a power-up exists in a game doesn't tell you how it affects the game. To know how it's used, how useful it is in context to the design, you'd have to willingly look up videos, read previews and view screenshots. If the the knowledge of the existence of something is a spoiler, then knowing anything about the game is inherently a spoiler. There's really no way around that if you want to know you want a game.

I'm still wrapping my head about this power up and its use, but mario looks cool in it.

That's my dilemma. Fortunately, I already know I want Nintendo games like Mario, so I don't need to know many things.

nickmitchOctober 11, 2011

Well, you could consider any game's hook or premise would be non-spoiler info while specifics would be spoilers. For instance, FLUDD in SMSunshine as part of the whole premise of the game isn't a spoiler. In Galaxy, the central concept is the planet thing, but knowing about Mario's new power ups (bee suit, ghost mushroom, etc) are added bonuses one would be surprised to see.
This is one of those areas where games and movies share some stuff in common. Movie trailers have to sell you on the movie without giving away too much of the plot. Here, the plot is a spoiler, but in some movies plot is all there is. Studios have to give you some without giving away all of it.
The line may be a bit fuzzy in both areas, but I think it's safe to say that this was kinda spoilery.

Ian SaneOctober 11, 2011

Mario stories are shit so there is no fear of spoilers there.  Nintendo will never pleasantly surprise me with a Mario plot twist.  As a result the specifics of the game like specific levels and power-ups are the only true surprises in a new Mario game.  It's fun to play the game and encounter a power-up and be surprised by it.  Well now that can't happen for Boomerang Mario because you put the specifics in the headline.

If there was a Twilight Princess headline years ago that said "Link gets spinner item" wouldn't that have sucked?  That was an unexpected item to get and it would have been annoying to have that spoiled before the game came out in a way that one could not choose to avoid the article.

Yes but now it's a safety issue.
