Capcom, however, declined his offer.

Keiji Inafune, co-creator of the Mega Man series, has stated that he wanted to work on Mega Man Legends 3 long after he left Capcom last year in an interview with Joystiq.

He told Joystiq that he wanted to work on both Mega Man Legends and Mega Man Universe, a classic Mega Man game for the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network. Both games were eventually cancelled, despite some support behind them from Capcom.

Right after he left Capcom, Inafune stated that he wanted to work on both games as a contractor, which Capcom declined. He further states about Mega Man Legends 3 that "The two projects were really hard to even get started, because the title is kind of old. We were bringing it back. It wasn't easy for me to get the go ahead from the company, I was fighting against the company, and now it's been canceled."

Inafune concludes the interview by making the following statement:

"I was kind of hoping that someone would come forth, again, and fight with the company and get that project going, but like I said, I don't know if anybody will have the guts to fight against the company right now,".

With such obstinate resistance to making MML3, you'd wonder why they even bothered to announce it in the first place.

Probably to see if there was an reasonably sized audience for such a game.

Since Capcom is so reluctant to do anything with the Mega Man franchise, the character's best chance for a revival is if he makes an appearance in a crossover game or even Super Smash Bros. Mega Man needs exposure and then a passionate enough director to get the project off the ground.

Bring back the American Mega Man Cartoon.

If Inafune really wanted to finish Legends 3 he shouldn't have left Capcom until the game was done.  I mean really now, the fact that he was Capcom's highest ranking game designer is what allowed him to be able to even get the project greenlite in the first place.  After he left the company and publicily trashed them, he should have realized this was going to kill Legends 3 and any hope of it ever being finished by anyone ever again.

Since Capcom no longer had any reason to try and please the top designer at the company since he was no longer there, they had no reason to continue a game that was made solely because of him.  Yeah I know Inafune hated his job, but it was foolish of him to think Capcom would allow him to finish making this game after he left, since he of all people should have known how Capcom would treat him once he lost his high ranking status at the company.

I'm sure he did figure the game would be cancelled if he left, but if he truly hated working there, then I don't think he would want to create even a game he wanted to make at a company he no longer likes.
