The cult indie classic will feature expanded levels in the upcoming 3DS remake.

Cave Story producer Jack Niida confirmed some of the new features in the 3DS version of Cave Story.

The first of these is that it will feature expanded levels. When asked further, he explains that "For the old time fans of Cave Story, there aren’t brand new stages, but what we did for these stages is we expanded it. So, there is more to it than there was before. There are new areas to explore, long time fans will definitely see the difference. Daisuke Amaya spent a long time creating this game and everything has been tweaked to fit the latest console,".

With the game being published by NIS America, it is expected that the game will feature a crossover of sorts. "You can probably expect our most popular character in there. Aside from that, you might see him as an item, as well." - Niida said. Several artwork pieces have shown Cave Story's lead character alongside Prinny, from the Disgaea and Prinny series.

Finally, Niida confirmed that the 3DS version will lack the original and DSiWare version as a bonus. His explanation for the absence is that "That’s one thing we were talking about too, but the problem was the amount of space on the card size. We sort of squeezed everything in and at this point we don’t have enough space for it."

Cave Story 3D will be released on November 8, 2011.

Talkback

I'm not sure I buy the excuse that they ran out of space, I think at least part of the reason is that they want people to still buy the DSiWare version too.

Yes, I think that's a really sorry excuse.  If they were smart, they would do something like offer a free download code for the original DSIware version as a preorder bonus.  I know that that isn't something they could just do on their own, they would have to get NOA approval or something, but with the 3DS in the state it is now, I'm sure they could sweet talk someone up in Redmond.

No.  Just go to Japan.  NoA only Does why they tell them too.

No, NoA has more autonomy than that. NoE is Japan's lapdog and will publish anything NCL hands them. NoA decides that stuff like Xenosaga just won't sell.

Shenanigans on the card space thing. Did they really expect anyone to believe that? Just say other versions won't be included.

How much data does the game take up? Was it close to the 40MB of the WiiWare limit? If they are using one of the smaller size 3DS cartridges then the reason may actually be true... I'm not ready to claim it shenanigans without some hint of proof. I mean sure, it may not cost much to increase the cart size, and the line is definitely to make it sound like the game is packed with content, but it could still be true in a literal sense.

I doubt it, since they managed to fit it within the 16 MB DSiWare limit.

The original (PC) is less than 3.5MB in size, and that's without using compression on the assets.
