Crytek's CryEngine and Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 are both headed to Nintendo's next console.

Reports indicate that both Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 and Crytek's CryEngine will be able to run on the recently-announced system.

Among the list of third party Wii U titles announced during the E3 press conference were Batman: Arkham City and Aliens: Colonial Marines. Both games run on Unreal Engine 3. Epic Games' Mark Rein has tacitly confirmed that the game engine is in the works for Wii U, but has declined to do so explicitly.

Crytek has explicitly confirmed that their CryEngine is already "pretty much running..." on Wii U. Crytek CEO Cevay Yerli told Develop, "Crytek's support is definitely going to happen."

The Wii was criticized for not being powerful enough to run modern game engines, meaning that there would be no possibility of playing these games as they could not be ported to the system. This looks to be changing with Wii U.

Man, I hope they port over Crysis 2. It would be so much easier to play if I could mark enemies using the touchscreen. Seriously, the game's graphics are too good. It makes it almost impossible to see people sometimes.

This is the most significant piece of news regarding the Wii U.  This was why Wii third party support sucked.  Third party support is not going to be an issue with the Wii U.  Nintendo actually got this right.

This is good news. Having these popular/powerful engines on the Wii U will make thing easier for the console. Hopefully they get used for more things than games with guns in them.

Developers are saying that the Wii U is 50% more powerful than the PlayStation 3, so there was no doubt it could run those engines. It is nice to see it confirmed that they will, especially since so many developers just rely on Unreal Engine 3 rather than create their own.

The real test is not whether WiiU can run current gen engines, but if it is powerful enough to run the next gen engines that PS4 & X720 will most likely be using...

but hopefully the new engines will be scalable with the current ones.

Well that is at least four engines now that are going to make the jump to the Wii U. I wonder if indie friendly engines will make the jump, such as Torque, which has a Wii version.

At least until the Xbox 420 and PS4 come out and start running new engines which the Wii U can't handle. ;)
