Mario and Sonic take their friendly rivalry to Europe, and make their 3DS debut in the process.

Sega has revealed that they are working on a third Mario and Sonic game, this time at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The third game in the series will once again be a mini-game collection based off of many Olympic sports. The new mini-games announced include both soccer and equestrian, while athletic events and table tennis make a return. As with previous titles, Dream Events, an arcade-like mode where the events are turned into Mario and Sonic themed mini-games, will make a return.

The Mario and Sonic series will return to the Wii, and make its debut on the 3DS. The title will be developed by Sega of Japan. Previous games in the series have been successful, selling over 19 million copies worldwide.

Both the Wii and 3DS version will be released later in the year.

It feels like we just had the Olympics a few months ago.

It is sad that a game called "Mario & Sonic" makes me roll my eyes and think "who cares?" when I see the headline announcing it.  Mario and Sonic together is the magic dream game we all imagined when we were kids and all they can come up with is some lame ass Olympics game and this becomes a series while the obvious idea of some sort of Mario vs. Sonic platformer continues to be a pipe dream.  Seriously, Sega, just let Tokyo EAD make a Mario/Sonic platformer and it will the best Sonic game in 15 years.

To me this is like Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat...

...Card Battle.

I couldn't agree more. While having Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games is a little fun, I wanna see those 2 in a RPG. THAT'S what I'd like to see.

In this series' defense, it's me and my daughter's favorite game to play together, or at least, it was until Epic Yarn.  The last one (Winter Olympics) was the first game to have a take on figure skating that didn't make you want to kill yourself.  In fact, name any other game that has made video game versions of sports like bobsledding, speedskating, or CURLING that didn't make you fall asleep.

Though the 3DS release mystifies me.  While it is a fantastic local multi/family/party game, who in their right mind would want to play this on a handheld by themselves?

I played the first one and for the most part the only worthwhile games in it are the Dream Events. There are a couple of others that can be fun because they work and aren't shallow waggle-fests, such as Archery and Skeet, but all of the track and field stuff and most everything else is too simple. It's largely nothing but an Olympics game with Mario characters instead of real athletes, it needs more flair. I haven't gotten the winter one yet but it doesn't look much better.

Since this game is practically a sequel to the Summer Olympics game and therefore will likely feature many of the same events, it has to expand on them and add more depth for it to be worthwhile. Let's hope it does, but I'm not hopeful.
