The biggest launch since the Wii in 2006 will take place in the city that never sleeps.

Nintendo will be hosting a massive launch event in New York City, starting on Saturday, March 26, 2011 and concluding on Sunday with the release of the 3DS. The event starts at 9:00pm at the Best Buy in Union Square, where attendees waiting in line will be able to try out the 3DS for the first time.

Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime will be at the event, where he will walk the line of waiting consumers and join attendees in throwing 3D glasses up into the air, symbolizing the fact that players won't need glasses in order to enjoy 3D visuals on the new handheld. Over 1,200 people are expected to be in the line.

At midnight, the 3DS will be sold, with the Best Buy store remaining open till 2:00am. The event has been hailed as one of the biggest system launches since the Wii in 2006.

Why red?
Who want's to hitch hike to New York City with me?

Because Nintendo's logo is red.

Maybe because the 3DS logo has red in it? Nintendo abandoned their red logo in 2008.
Logistically, maybe it's because they already have red lights installed for stuff like Valentine's Day.

Man, I hope those 3D glasses are made of paper or soft plastic. I suspect a lot of poked eyes and people hurt from the glasses flinging XD

At 11:00PM, Fils-Aime will be lifted to atop the crowd using a hydraulic stage where the countdown clock to the 3DS release will appear.

Because nothing could possibly go wrong with this.

Dammit. While I'll be visiting the store earlier in the day, I'll be attending a Broadway play while this is going on. Not to say the latter is inherently bad, it's supposed to be extremely funny.

I wish I could say that I would be there, but recent events are blocking my launch day 3DS Madness. I may go just to see Reggie swing his cage around and scream like King Kong. What else could he possibly do for an hour? Sounds like a real time!

Like I said in another quote on another written piece, it's driving me NUTS waiting for the release date to get here! (Fortunately, I timed my vacation to start THAT specific day. Now I'll have an entire week of uninterrupted play time with it! BOO-YEAH!!!)
