Capcom is finally creating a brand new entry in the Mega Man Legends series.

Capcom announced today that Mega Man Legends 3 Project is currently under development for the 3DS.  The newly revealed game will be the first original Mega Man Legends installment in ten years.

The creator of Mega Man, Keiji Inafune, is the game’s executive producer, and Masakazu Eguchi is the director.  The Capcom Unity blog mentions that fans will have a chance to be directly involved in the title’s creation by interacting with members of the development team.

Capcom is planning to reveal more details at the upcoming New York Comic Con.  Inafune's introduction is found below.

Sweet!  I love the MM Legends series.  I'm very pumped for this.

BeautifulShySeptember 29, 2010

I never played a Mega Man Legends game before so I'm interested in trying this out.

HOOK IT TO MY VEINS

CalibanSeptember 29, 2010

I played the first MML on PC. Heck I didn't even know there was MML 2.

And another console franchise goes to a handheld instead of making a glorious return on the consoles.  Yay?  :-\

UltimatePartyBearSeptember 29, 2010

Yes, yay.  I'm just glad to finally get it.  And also that it's coming to a system I want to buy anyway, since this series could probably sell me on a new one.

I'm both surprised and not surprised at this. I know Inafune has wanted to make another Mega Man Legends game for years now, so I figured one would surface eventually. It seemed the main complaint about the games was that they were so different from previous Mega Man games, but now that there have been so many spin-offs, it will be a lot more accepted. What I am surprised at is it being on a handheld. Oh well.

I was definitely not expecting this announcement. Mega Man Legends on the go. Sounds to good to be true.

This is one of those game series that I constantly hear people asking to get a sequel even thought the game seemed to receive a mediocre response. I'm glad for those people that it is coming. I remember watching my friend play it on the N64. It didn't look half bad from the gameplay side.

From Inafune's video, it sounds as if he had trouble getting TPTB at Capcom to support making another Legends because of the low-profit margin.  Perhaps developing it for a handheld might cost less?  I can only guess, but I'd have to admit that it would seem bizzare for Megaman to have a home console release these days.  I'd love it if Legends were the game that Level-5 was working on with Capcom, but I doubt that's the case.

Legends was a game that got a lot better as the game went on; it wasn't as fun as long as you just had your basic abilities, but once you did get a few of the upgrades, the gameplay did really open up.  The strange part about it was that you usually had to go grind or farm for Zenny in order to fund your upgrades.  It's been a long time since I've played any of the games, but I really loved the character design, the humor, and the boss encounters.    For a PS1-era game, some of them were larger than life.

Stratos, the game was pretty decent.  It and MGS were probably my two favorite games in the Playstation platform...perhaps that's because I never got around to trying Symphony of the Night.

I'll have to hunt down a copy of the Original Legends and check it out myself.

GoldenPhoenixOctober 01, 2010

Hope they port over the first two over to 3DS, I never got the chance to play the first game much.

SundoulosOctober 01, 2010

I had always sort of hoped that they would put the N64 of Legends, Mega Man 64, version out on Virtual Console, along with the first 3 X games.  Outside of the original NES series, we haven't seen much on there, though.

I've been searching around for rumors on this for years. I finally found the video where he wanted to make the game using some game dark planet or something engine. And now this :) I'm so happy, but I really hope this will also be on a console or pc after the prototype. This is one of the games that would get me to buy a ps3, wii or xbox. I hope the english voice actors for roll, tron and tiesel are still alive and well. Those 2 characters just wouldn't be the same without them :)

Now if only activision would make a 3rd vigilante game and lucas arts would make a jedi knight 4!
