Please Please Please come the states oh Super Mario Collection Special Pack!!!

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)September 02, 2010

Everyone should check out the (possible) inspiration for Kirby's Epic Yarn, the original Japanese commercial for Kirby's Adventure on the NES/Famicom! Awesome.

Also, let me second that plea for All-Stars collection!

Dear Reggie,

I would like the Super Mario Collection Special Pack for Christmas, I have been very good.

-Nathan

Some time later...

Dear Nathan,

Unfortunately at this time we cannot confirm nor deny the possibility of a Super Mario Collection Special Pack in the States this Christmas,
though it was kind of you to write in nine months in advance. What I can say is, Miyamoto-San has been dabbling in coal mining
as of late, and you never know what will arrive in your stocking!

Love,
Reggie

Cons:
VC is cheaper.
I've already downloaded all of the titles via VC.
No messy disc with VC.
Probably isn't coming to the US.
No Super Mario World (my version of All Stars has Super Mario World!)

Pros:
Awesome soundtrack (I assume).
Can play this on any Wii without having to re-download it (and paying for it again).
Purty graphics.
We all know I'm going to buy it anyway.

It's a shame it's just a port.  It'd be neat if it included options for NES, SNES and Wii graphics.  It'd be awesome if it included an option to use the NSMBWii engine for multi-player.  Imagine playing Super Mario Bros. 2 USA with four players.  But then, we're looking at a $50 release instead of a $30 release, I'm sure.

TJ SpykeSeptember 02, 2010

Which version of Super Mario All-Stars? There were two versions (they later re-released the game to include Super Mario World).

UncleBob, we both know that many people (myself included) would be more than happy to buy the SMAS versions of the games because they are much better graphically and audio-wise. Plus, for another $10 you get that booklet and a CD. Hell, I would probably be willing to buy the port alone for the money.

PLEASE Nintendo, bring that over here. I would be more than willing to pay $30 for it and I wouldn't be surprised if if it sold at least 500K here (especially considering that more than 500K people in the US paid $30 just to get Classic NES Series: Super Mario Bros. on GBA).

LittleIrvesSeptember 02, 2010

I think the best part of this edition would be the music CD, honestly.  I've still got my SNES cart, and I might even prefer the NES graphics and sound to the All-Stars version anyway.  Now, if there was some crazy option to switch between NES/SNES/Wii audio-visuals, that's another story.  But that ain't happening.  Still hope it comes stateside, if only to gaze at it in the aisle.

FZeroBoyoSeptember 02, 2010

Should this come to the U.S., then my avatar will convey my feelings quite well.  ;D

Sounds like quite a package, so I hope we do get something to commemorate 25 years of Mario. (Hopefully even a segment about it on RFN.)

TJ SpykeSeptember 02, 2010

That got me thinking, next year is the 30th anniversary of both Mario and Donkey Kong and I wonder if Nintendo will do anything to celebrate that.

broodwarsSeptember 02, 2010

Sounds like an awesome package, one that sadly I know is too awesome for Nintendo to bring over here in any way, shape, or form.  We might get lucky and get the Wii version of Mario All Stars, but that's about it...unfortunately.

C'mon, Nintendo!  Prove me wrong!  Announce it for North America (even make it a Club Nintendo exclusive if need be)!

If this is literally Super Mario All-Stars on a disc, then no thank you. I'm not paying full price for a ROM and a soundtrack disc.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorSeptember 02, 2010

I really really hope I'm just being pessimistic, but the fact that this is a retail release of games that are (kind of) already on the VC scares the crap out of me.

If Nintendo bails on VC I will be one of the most depressed video game fans in the world.

Killer_Man_JaroTom Malina, Associate Editor (Europe)September 02, 2010

I own all three games already, so this collection isn't for me. I'd like to to see how it looks, though I suppose the obvious answer would be that it will be running on the same engine as New Super Mario Bros. Wii, so chances are that the remakes will be in the pre-rendered style of that game.

Query: would it not be more sensible to separate this news item from the new Kirby and Golden Sun trailers? It seems the parts of the article unrelated to Super Mario Collection Pack are being glazed over. For what it's worth, the trailer for Kirby's Epic Yarn is definitely worth watching. It has me more excited than the trailer from E3, and now I'm very ticked off at its 2011 release in Europe. Also, everyone's been worried about the fact that there wasn't any clear way for to die -- remember: there's always bottomless pits, which may be a credible threat now that Kirby's jump has been cut short.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorSeptember 02, 2010

If this was getting a New Super Mario Bros update, then I'm totally fine with it.  If it's just the SNES game, I would have much rather seen it on VC with a premium price tag to correspond with the quanity of games... or... better yet... chop it into three VC games each with SNES price point.

Certainly. I struggle to see a no-frills-attached re-release of a SNES game on Wii flying in today's market. I think there needs to be an appreciable difference between All Stars and this new package, and to me, updated graphics and sound is the only good approach.

Kytim89September 02, 2010

Nintendo should release this game as either a VC title with a premium, or sell it as a wiiware rebirth title. All in all, I would prefer to have this game as a down load title than pay full price for a ROM that is nearly twenty-years-old. Good one Nintendo, but we are not falling for your tricks this time!

TJ SpykeSeptember 02, 2010

Why are people acting like this is a bad value? One, you can not buy these on the VC. Second, the soundtrack sounds like it will be worth more than $10.

Kytim and Jonny, how is $30 full price? A standard Wii game is $50. The game be 2,500 Yen (which is about $29.70).

Even if this is just the first version of SMAS, it would cost $20 to buy the plain VC versions. Here you get the SNES re-makes (which had vastly superior graphics, better sound, built-in save features, and fixed glitches), plus a soundtrack CD that spans the last 25 years of Mario, and a booklet, for just $10 more. This is easily a great value. Killer Man, there are four games in SMAS or five in the re-release (Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3).

Even if Nintendo only charged $1 premium per game on VC, that would still add up to $24. You don't think the booklet and CD (plus convenience of not needing to waste space on the menu) are worth $6?

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorSeptember 02, 2010

Don't know if you were referring to me too there Spyke, but my beef is not with the value.  I just don't like that they are creating a branch in their "platforms" if you will.

IMO, Nintendo's already bailed on the VC and they've already made it fairly clear that they're not putting compilation games on the VC, so I'll take getting a version of Mario All Stars (especially if they jazz it up with NSMBW visuals, which I doubt).  Besides, the CD's worth the value to me.

AVSeptember 02, 2010

Mario 1: $5
Mario 2: $5
Mario 3: $5
Mario World: $8
Mario Lost levels: $6
=
$29

I already have tons mario songs on my ipod
Maybe if they include mario land 1+2 with updated graphics and music that would be cool.

I'd like to to see how it looks, though I suppose the obvious answer would be that it will be running on the same engine as New Super Mario Bros. Wii, so chances are that the remakes will be in the pre-rendered style of that game.

I would love to see a "Wario Land: Shake It!" take on SMB3.

That is not at all the obvious answer, and in fact there is no chance these games are being reskinned with 3D visuals at this price point. Also, there is nothing pre-rendered about NSMB Wii. It's all rendered in real-time, including the backgrounds.

Retro DeckadesSeptember 02, 2010

And yeah, perhaps it's false optimism on my part to expect that, but as I said to Pale, I cannot see a straight port flying in the marketplace. I mean, seriously, how would you sell that to people?

Hence all the added pack-ins.

AVSeptember 02, 2010

maybe they can trick the Wii and run all the old games in 720p. The wii should be able to handle simple games like that in HD and maybe include orchestrated remix soundtracks like they had in Brawl, and Galaxy.

I can dream can't i?

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorSeptember 02, 2010

I'm amused by all the people who think this won't sell.

It may not be for *you*, but it will sell.  How many copies of the Super Mario Advance games sold (at a real full price) on the GBA?  Hell, how many copies of the NES Classics SMB sold (although not at full price)?

At $30 with all the goodies, I'd bet this to be a million+ seller.

This kind of release is standard in Japan (though less so for Nintendo), and it's actually cheap compared to the usual prices for this kind of thing.  It sounds like it might be a limited run anyway, but it will absolutely sell.

Mop it upSeptember 02, 2010

If the press release specifically stated that the game is Super Mario All-Stars, I don't think this compilation includes Super Mario World. That game was titled Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World, so the article probably would have mentioned Super Mario World.

Ever since New Super Mario Brothers Wii launched, I've thought it'd be neat if they created a New Super Mario All-Stars that included all the previous Mario games in the NSMB style. The co-op alone would make it worthwhile. Too bad that isn't what this is.

Quote from: UncleBob

There are fan projects for New Super Mario Brothers Wii out there that have already re-created the entirety of the original Super Mario Brothers, as well as a lot of Super Mario World. I believe someone is working on SMB3 as well, though I'm not sure. They are worth checking out if you are interested. Super Mario USA is not possible, of course, since it's a whole different type of game.

Well, it says Super Mario Collection, which is the Japanese name for Super Mario All-Stars.  Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World was never released in Japan, so take that as you will.

Ask for my fanboy card if you want, but none of the 20-odd VC games I bought are the Mario ones. So I'd be in if this came over at $30 (hell, probably $40 given NoC's pricing decisions) since the games are $21, the CD and artbook are $19, and I know this will play on my inevitable Super Wii.

FZeroBoyoSeptember 03, 2010

It seems that part of me says, "Why would I buy this when I have a perfectly-function cartridge and SNES to play it on?" while the fan in me says, "All that great stuff that comes with it. Uh...!" It's kind of like the TvC dilemma I heard about on an episode of RFN a few weeks back.

hey look, mops a star!!!

on vc I got the super mario bros, lost levels and world..  skipped on 3 and 2 (odd considering 2 is my favorite in the series)

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorSeptember 03, 2010

Holy crap, I'm scared...

KDR_11kSeptember 04, 2010

I want it, I lost my All Stars cart long ago and the soundtrack is too expensive in the stars catalog.

Massively pointless if the sprite art is only set up for 320x240 or less.

KDR, where in the catalog is it? I just checked the UK catalog and the only Mario soundtrack I could find was for Super Mario Galaxy.

Sorry, that's what I meant. I want the Galaxy soundtrack but almost 4000 stars is really too much for me.

TJ SpykeSeptember 04, 2010

Yeah, based on how you get stars it seems like you would have to buy several hundred pounds worth of games to get enough stars for it. We don't even get that option in North America though. I ended up downloading it online since it is not available here (it has not been released commercially, only has Club Nintendo rewards in Japan and Europe. This means I would have to try and find a copy on a site like eBay).

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)September 07, 2010

"Super Mario Collection" is something I'm always on the lookout for my Super Famicom while browsing used games shops here in Japan.
The only cart I ever found was something in the region of 3000 Yen ($30) without a box or manual.
So yeah, now I think about it this isn't such a bad deal, considering the extra stuff you get.

I would however, pay full price for:
-NSMBW graphical updates (optional of course) of these all on one disk with 4-player.
-E-reader levels
-Mario World
-GC/CC/CC-Pro support

Spak-SpangSeptember 07, 2010

I would buy it because the All Star games are quite different than the originals.  The graphics update alone are all quite nice and just makes great games even better.  I also like the idea of having all the classic games have a similar consistent looking Mario, that is still sprite based.

If it included World it would be an instant buy.  If it included World and World 2...it would be an instant full price game buy.

mustbeburtSeptember 13, 2010

If you were to import this, would it play on a U.S. Wii?  Or would you need a Japanese Wii?

TJ SpykeSeptember 13, 2010

You would have to mod your Wii (either through hardware or something like Gecko OS). By default a Wii will not play games from other regions.

Kytim89September 13, 2010

They should include an enhanced remake of Mario 64 into this collection.

Manthony ChopkinsSeptember 13, 2010

The soundtrack definitely makes this a tempting offer, assuming the collection make its way across the Pacific. On a side note, after watching the Japanese Kirby Epic Yarn trailer, I've come to the conclusion that firetruck Kirby is the most adorable thing I have seen yet from this game.

famicomplicatedJames Charlton, Associate Editor (Japan)September 14, 2010

OK, so now we know: this game is the SNES ROM dumped on a DVD disk, nothing new, not even Mario World.

So basically it's all about having the cool box and the soundtrack CD. (and being entered into the sweepstakes to win some cool swag)

I'm just hoping this causes the price to come down of that boxed copy of Super Mario Collection I've had my eye on for a while now. My Super Famicom collection will feel so much more complete with it.

See, when they first announced it, that's what I thought they meant. If this is simply a SNES game emulated on Wii... hm, now where have I seen that before? Oh, wait, it's called Virtual Console. The appeal of this package is minimal to me - some may want it for the book and the CD, but that's supplementary stuff at best. I would only consider buying this through download. Not necessarily 800 Points; it's a special occasion and the game is an anthology of 3 NES games, so the premium price of 1500 would be acceptable. That's not happening though, and it's debatable as to whether it will ever show up in the West. If it does not, meh, no big loss.

4 games, and enhanced with SNES and sounds and graphics (along with tons of other improvements over the NES versions). How you thought there was even a chance it would be 1500 (when even the plain NES versions would cost 2100 points, and these are much better). It's OK if you don't want it, but it's pretty cool and worth more than what you are willing to pay.

Ah, I forgot about Super Mario USA. Even still, it's not like they have any additional work to do and I'd hesitate to say that All-Stars made "tons of improvements" as you say. I mean, I love these games as much as the next person, but I have them all, some in more than one form, and to me, there's little justification other than the CD, and it's so easy to get that music off the internet anyway.

FZeroBoyoSeptember 14, 2010

Perhaps this is their solution to not putting Super Mario All-Stars on Virtual Console in that case?
