Nintendo's annual shareholder meeting produces plenty of speculation fodder.

Nintendo held its annual shareholders meeting on the June 29, and there were plenty of interesting comments made by top Nintendo brass. The following is a wrap-up of information gathered from Sankei Shimbun, an attendee blog that detailed the event, and some other information gathered by Andriasang.

Miyamoto's Comments

- Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned that "it's about time" for a new character to be introduced, and speculated that it might happen next year.

- He noted that it had been 10 years since the company introduced Pikmin, and that he would like to get a new Pikmin game out "quickly".

- Miyamoto was asked what games he's working on, and he noted that his outside interests tend to make their way into his future games.  On that note, he said that he has been swimming a lot lately, and is spending lots of time with school children as part of a "guidance organization".

Nintendo 3DS

- Miyamoto also stated that he is currently busy with Nintendo 3DS software development.

- The 3DS may be given functionality that displays "play time" like the Wii console.

- A question was asked about a successor to the Nintendo 3DS, and the company line of "we're always thinking of the next system" was given.  However, they revealed that they were thinking about the 3DS as far back as six years ago.

- The Nintendo 3DS was demoed for the shareholders in attendance, with a large group of Nintendo employees handling the demo units.  The demo had various items displayed in 3D for viewing, such as Smash Bros.-style character trophies.

- It was asked whether or not the 3DS version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time would have the same "polygon visuals" as the Nintendo 64 version, and the Nintendo representative seemed to indicate that they would be improved somewhat thanks the better graphics capabilities of the 3DS.

Miscellaneous

- A shareholder asked if Nintendo would ever consider making making games for devices like the iPad, and Iwata said no.  He cited the fact that Nintendo makes its own hardware, and that other devices do not match Nintendo's values.

- Nintendo has no plans for a theme park, and if they ever built one it would not simply be a normal theme park with Nintendo characters.

Oh, to dream...

I've thought it before, and this just furthers it: I don't think it's out of the question that Nintendo could unveil the new Pikmin at their traditional fall media summit, or some other event, and then release it before the end of the year.

That would be really cool. Do you think it will be on Wii, or that they'll reveal a 3DS version?

I think if it were on the 3DS it would have been at E3. Miyamoto's comments about not wanting it to be overshadowed don't really make sense if it's not a Wii game.

"The one thing that I can say about it is that it's a Wii game. " ~ Shigeru Miyamoto.

It's a Wii game.

Since he said a new character and not a new IP or franchise, it leads me to believe the character will be added to an existing game.

I can only hope it doesn't mean the game will be rushed out the door.

Since he also mentioned that the last character he introduced was 10 years ago (Pikmin), I would be very surprised if it wasn't a new IP.

Where's a link to the original meeting? Am I missing that?

Guitar SmasherJuly 01, 2010

I'm just going off of what I read on Kotaku.

ThePermJuly 08, 2010

keep in mind this is most likely translated, so new character can mean new IP. I imagine it is cumbersome to use the phrase or abbreviation of "intellectual property" in Japanese.

Ian SaneJuly 08, 2010

We must be talking about a new IP because Nintendo has clearly introduced new characters to their existing franchises since then.  If it was just a new character in a game then why mention Pikmin?  Pikmin was a new IP.

Swimming is a good interest to inspire game design.  Chillin' with school children?  Not so much.

StratosJuly 09, 2010

So are they not counting titles like Last Story or Xenoblade in that reference to new characters?

Mop it upJuly 10, 2010

No, they aren't. Those may be Nintendo-published titles, but the companies who developed them aren't Nintendo-owned. I think Miyamoto was specifically referring to Nintendo themselves as the ones to introduce a new character. I guess they don't count Miis, though.

Uhhh Monolith is Nintendo owned and they are making Xenoblade. Really I think he meant the primary teams, not necessarily companies they own controlling interest in.

ThePermJuly 10, 2010

thank goodness for GP, i was going to correct them, but i got lazy.

Mop it upJuly 10, 2010

Was it a relatively recent acquisition? Because they've released PS2 games. Regardless, it doesn't change my point, because other Nintendo-published titles have introduced new characters.

TJ SpykeJuly 10, 2010

Nintendo bought Monolith Soft way back in August 2007.

StratosJuly 10, 2010

And then failed to support most of their previous efforts. They made both Disaster and Soma Bringer. Both never came to North America.

But wait, I can see it now, ~~~~~~~~~~(dream sequence lines)~~~~~~

At the ticket booth, tickets are printed on Game and Watch replica playing cards, all food attendants are dressed up as colorful Toads and Kirby Chefs.

to my left I see the Super Mario Jumpman Palace where the kids run wild on a 100yard Mario obstacle course(me too, he he), Ohh I see my favorite twin roller-coaster ride, Mario Sunshine Splat where one coaster designed as Mario and the other as Dark Mario and you shoot mounted FLUDD's at each other as you race through Delfino cardboard cutouts

Now welcome to the World of You and Mii(for some reason they didn't use Wuhu Island) where we play a variety of WiiSports themed games and earn NinTiX to redeem prizes at the Nintendo Shop Channel Store(?)

And of course we must ride the Yoshi-Go-Round, visit Bowser's Haunted Castle where Boo's resemble white PacMan(men) for some reason, and for the parents that want to relax and let your children get lost, you have the Wii Vitality Center where they...too explicit.

Welcome to Konga Land(?) where you must ride the Mine Kart Koster(not as fun as you thought) and see that REAL banana peels are all over the ground! Once you get to the Hyrule area you notice that its just a 500yard area of grass that only had illusionist props that made you think you were actually walking toward Goron Mountain and the random stands only sell you Deku Seeds(walnuts) and warm milk!

F-Zero bumper cars!!!!!...was  just    like    regular    bu  mp er cars, (yawn).

Whats this on the ground? why those are Pikachu foot prints, I'd know them any where, you follow them all through the park to the biggest PokeBall gate ever and a Pikachu is holding a sign that says "Poke Park shall be opened once you defeat the Elite Four"(under construction)

As you and your family call it a day and your 6 year old sister has been scarred for life after seeing 100 6ft tall Pikmin try to get her to stop crying and every one is carrying around giant Porky Minch'sbecause there's a Mario shortage, you have this weird feeling..........did you see Luigi?

StogiJuly 10, 2010

I think Nintendo might finally release the Marionette game. I think it could be fun to control on screen puppets or even sock puppets.

KDR_11kJuly 11, 2010

The mechs in Super Control Robot MG were called Marionation Gears, that may be what the trademark referred to.
