Zelda producer discusses his views on DLC in regards to the series.

Eiji Aonuma, producer of the Zelda series, discussed the potential of downloadable content in the series in a recent interview with Game Informer.

When questioned about the topic, he replied with, “Obviously, we have thought about DLC, and we are thinking about it." This is by no means a confirmation of downloadable content appearing in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, but it at least tells us that they are considering it.

Another interesting piece of information that Aonuma discussed was the idea of online functionality. He commended that online play may not come in the form of multi-player or co-op, but instead through "the idea of communications between players."

The latest Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward, is set to be released next year.

3DS to have lots of internal storage is how I'm reading this story.

This sounds like an expansion on the latest DS games that had online collaboration.  In addition, they may allow you to get mail from other players.... Those mailboxes will have new meaning - just you wait.

"Bob beat that mini game in 3:33 seconds? Can you?"

I'm not in the mood for this.  Too often DLC is abused.  If Nintendo wants to a year later or so add an expansion pack, that would be awesome.  But if it's just a bunch of little stuff that they ding you on each time, I don't want it.

Nobody uses DLC for what we actually want it for, like roster updates in sports games.  They just use it to charge for things that originally used to come with the game for free.

DLC doesn't always cost money.  Nintendo seems like the kind of business that would see the value in giving away free tidbits to increase a game's value, especially since they don't want to lower the prices of games after launch.  Instead of the price dropping, the value goes up until it's high enough to entice new buyers.  It's a nice theory, anyway.

But yeah, I ain't payin' $2 for Epona armor.

Yeah just look at Animal Crossing:City Folk Nintendo sends you free things every so often. I like how Nintendo does DLC.

I WOULDN'T MIND PAYING $5 FOR A NEW TEMPLE

New dungeons would be nice. If they can someone add a system that random creates them then they could most likely due it without space being to much of an issue I think. The DLC just gives the game instructions to generate a particular area. At least that's my understanding how dungeon systems like that work.
That or let us stream data off of SD cards.

The problem with procedural generation is that you'll see the patterns sooner or later and with a puzzle-heavy game like Zelda that's a complete no-go.

I expect them to adapt a Valve like approach to DLC. Free extra content to increase long term sales and increase long term staying power reducing second hand sales as a positive side effect.
