This Week in Nintendo Downloads

A temporarily free, wacky photo-based fighter arrives on DSiWare, Phoenix Wright serves justice on WiiWare, and Virtual Console content is once again non-existent.

This week the Nintendo Downloads update features some very unique games, as well as the return of some beloved franchises. On DSiWare, Nintendo's Photo Dojo leads the lineup. Using the DSi's cameras, players take pictures of themselves and other players in different fighting poses and use them for their playable character in this simple but wacky fighting game. You can even use the DSi's microphone to record yells and sound effects.

NWR staff member Neal Ronaghan recently participated in a Nintendo-hosted Photo Dojo tournament, and will be visiting Nintendo's Headquarters in order to take on champion Bill Trinen. Expect coverage of this event in the coming days. In the meantime, from now until June 10 the game is available for free. Afterwards, Photo Dojo will be available for 200 DSi Points ($2).

The other notable DSiWare release this week is Earthworm Jim. Developed by Gameloft, Earthworm Jim is an action platformer that first started its life on the Super Nintendo in the mid 90s, remaining a popular franchise throughout the decade. Players use various weapons as well as Jim's head to jump and swing through obstacles. Earthworm Jim can be downloaded for 500 DSi Points ($5).

From Digital Leisure comes Chess Challenge! For 500 DSi Points ($5), players will be able to compete with their friends using DS Wireless play in various chess challenges.

The final DSiWare release this week is Flips: The Enchanted Wood from Electronic Arts. This is an educational title taking place in a fantasy world. For 500 DSi Points ($5), players will take on various story-based challenges and interact with the colorful characters.

WiiWare sees only two titles this week. From Capcom comes the third Phoenix Wright game, Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations. The game is a port of the Gameboy Advance/DS title and is the final chapter in the Phoenix Wright storyline (the fourth game, Apollo Justice, would star a new attorney). The title presents players with five cases, and as in previous Phoenix Wright titles they must investigate crime scenes and talk to suspects in order to gather information that can be used in court. The title will set players back 1,000 Wii Points ($10).

The final release this week is the WiiWare version of Chess Challenge! Like its DSiWare counterpart, the game can be downloaded for 500 Wii Points ($5). Chess gurus can compete with other players by posting their best times via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

For the second week in a row, no games were released on Virtual Console.

In addition to the weekly downloads, Nintendo has updated the "Big Name Games" section of WarioWare D.I.Y's downloadable game collection. This week's game comes from Jason Schreiber of Powerhead Games, best known for their DSiWare series Glow Artisan.

Talkback

O LOOK NO SHANTAY

I made a Photo Dojo fighter out of my cat. It's cute, meows, purrs, and kicks ass. I am amused for about five minutes.

BeautifulShyMay 10, 2010

Does Shantae even have a release date for it?
I mean if it was suppose to come out a few weeks ago I would understand your comments and I would agree with it but if there hasn't been any comfirmation than you are just doing this to annoy people.
Another thing we are Nintendo fans so waiting for games shouldn't really be a problem.

It was supposed to come out last year. Then the 1st quarter of this year. It's still not here. This is worse than Castlevania Rebirth.

BeautifulShyMay 10, 2010

Got a Link to that?

NinGurl69 *hugglesMay 10, 2010

Last week's Zombie Panic is neat.  The machine guns have a subdued sound unlike the loud sharp booming Hollywood style "bangs" from most games, so it doesn't cause headaches as quickly as Capcom's ZombChronicles.  Quite soothing.

broodwarsMay 10, 2010

Trials and Tribulations is far from my favorite Phoenix Wright game (Godot is just incredibly dull compared to his predecessors, Franziska and Edgeworth), but it's nice to finally have it.  I'm surprised the final case from the first WiiWare Ace Attorney game wasn't released this week as well to capitalize on Trials & Tribulation's release.  I hope these games did well for Capcom, because I'd like to have Apollo Justice on WiiWare as well.  Hell, they'll have to figure out how to emulate the touch screen with that Ace Attorney 5th Case anyway, so they might as well just bring Apollo Justice over to WiiWare as well.

Yet another week without VC makes me sad, though to be fair we are still getting two old games today in Phoenix Wright: T&T and Earthworm Jim.

Looking forward to Bit.Trip Runner next week, and hopefully it won't cost more than 1,000 points because that's all I have.  ;)

TheBlackCatMay 10, 2010

Two weeks of no virtual console?  Where the heck is Kirby Superstars?  Japan got it last October.

I think Capcom said they would release the extra case after they finished releasing the main games on WiiWare, so I assume we will get it next week.

NinGurl69 *hugglesMay 10, 2010

Nintendo doesn't care about VC titles when it has retail games doing well.

Official verdict: It was slated for Q4 2009 when it was announced last fall. It got delayed at some point and was pushed back to Q1 2010. Recently (when the trailer came out), it was pushed back to Q2 2010.

So, Zach has a right to complain.

NemoMay 10, 2010

Dang it Blizzard, where's my Rock'n Roll Racing?!

(As far as I know, it's not coming, ever... but it should.)

Zach has every right to be annoyed about this delay.

BeautifulShyMay 11, 2010

Alright I will stop commenting on it.

StratosMay 11, 2010

Yay for the 3rd Phoenix game! Almost finished with the 2nd so good timing. I'm debating getting the 4th on DS or waiting to see if they bring that one as well to WiiWare.

You shut your filthy mouth.  Godot is a million times better than Franziska.

Franziska is just annoying with her whip and obsessions.

As opposed to the smug and condescending Edgeworth and the bland; smug; and condescending (but with a coffee obsession and a goofy mask!  Yes, isn't that hilarious?!) Godot?    All Godot has going for him is that he has an awesome backstory, whereas Franziska has IMO some of the most memorable scenes and lines in the Trilogy.  The only time I can ever remember laughing is when his previous court record gets brought up moments after his introduction.

Actually, replaying Trials & Tribulations now, that pretty much sums up the whole game: a really engrossing story, but one whose storytelling tends to drag a bit and jokes tend to fall a bit flat.  I'm stuck on the same part of the second case that I got stuck on in my original replay (I could have sworn I've scoured this basement for everything there is to click on at the beginning of the case, but the game just won't let me progress) so I haven't gotten to Godot yet.  Maybe he holds up better now.

StratosMay 12, 2010

I hate Franziska. I just want to tear that whip away from her. I know it's a game and a fictional storyline and all that, but it feels really preposterous that the judge let's her abuse lawyers, witnesses, cops and himself with it in court.

Edgeworth is better I think.
