Mario's latest knocks Wii Fit off of the throne.

The weekly Japanese sales report published by ASCII Media Works lists New Super Mario Bros. Wii as selling 35,580 copies, right behind number-one seller Pokemon Ranger: Path of Light. What's notable about this sales tally is that it officially makes New Super Mario Bros. Wii the best-selling Wii title in Japan to date.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii has now sold approximately 3,495,000 copies in the territory, inching just ahead of previous record-holder Wii Fit, which sits at roughly 3,474,000 units sold.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii has been available in Japan since December 3 of last year.

WiiFit would still hold the record if you were to count the replacement game, WiiFit+.

Wii Fit sold more than Wii Sports in Japan?

Kytim89March 21, 2010

It is no surprise, the game is pretty good. In fact, it is one of the best that I have played in awhile. I hope it sells even more and it probably will due to the quality of the game and its popularity.

Wii Fit sold more than Wii Sports in Japan?

Yeah, but not by much.

After Wii Sports Resort came out, that became the default game for most new Wii owners in Japan, it's the same way that sales of Wii Fit dropped off after Wii Fit Plus came out.

Hey TJ Spyke, would you happen to have the total sales numbers for Wii Sports in Japan? I looked for them briefly in the Sales Thread but I couldn't find them. I'm curious how close it is to Wii Fit.

TJ SpykeMarch 21, 2010

According to Famitsu, Wii Sports was at 3,592,834 at the end of 2009 (it's been awhile since Wii Sports has been in the top 10, so it's harder to get more recent numbers). For that same period, they have Wii Fit at 3,555,555.

Not sure who ASCII Media Works are, but the 2 main video games sales trackers in Japan are Media Create and Famitsu.

It's so hard to tell with all these competing trackers and their different methods. Both of the totals TJ Spyke just cited are larger than anything in the original news story.

There's also Dengeki for Japanese sales tracking.

edit:
Salesbot figures for the last time Wii Fit appeared in Famitsu, Media Create & Dengeki.
Famitsu Top 100 of 2009
12. Wii Fit (Nintendo) - 588,258 / 3,555,555

Media Create 12 Month Top 30 (ending Nov. 29, 2009)
09. Wii Fit - 715,136 (3,561,821)

Dengeki Top 30 of 2009
15. Wii Fit - 499,251 (3,470,325)

I just checked, and I think ASCII Media Works is the parent company of Dengeki.

Like Johnny said, each of them do different tracking methods and usually have different numbers. Take this weeks sales, for example. The top selling game according to both Media Create and Famitus is Pokemon Ranger: Tracks of Light; but Media Create has it at 65,000 and Famitsu has it at 68,400 (sometimes MC has the higher number).
