Nintendo dates Mario's next adventure.

Nintendo has announced the release date for Super Mario Galaxy 2 at their Q1 Media Summit in San Francisco. The highly anticipated sequel is set for release on May 23.

Nintendo conducted a live demo of the game for an audience of journalists, showing off Mario's drill move as well as his ability to ride Yoshi. Yoshi's skills were also shown, including his patented flutter jump as well as his ability to float through the air after eating Wind Fruit. The Wind Fruit looks to be an integral part of the overall gameplay.

Several of the game's environments were shown as well, indicating a giant world much like Super Mario Bros. 3. There was a battle with a Gigaleg-style monster on a planetoid, some platforming on a floating cylinder, and exploration of a disc with cut-out stairs and platforms. Several different enemies made an appearance, including a dragon, and ghosts that eat parts of the ground around Mario.

Look for videos and impressions of Super Mario Galaxy 2 as soon as we can post them.

I'm trying to figure out why I want to play this so soon after Galaxy.

For the time being, I look forward to the cascade of new assets that you'll be receiving later today. I'm also hoping that the European release date is shortly afterwards, as the original was launched worldwide within a week.

GoldenPhoenixFebruary 24, 2010

So excited! Looks like it is really adding some exciting things to the game, I wonder if Yoshi will be playable in all levels?

Super Mario Galaxy came out way back in November 2007, so this game will be coming out 2 1/2 years after the original.

I can't wait for this. I loved Super Mario Galaxy, the only issue I had was that I didn't feel much need to go back and play again after collecting all 241 stars.

1 Question. Does the Wind Fruit look like a bean?

D_AverageFebruary 24, 2010

This game is looking better and better!  Who knows, it could turn out as the best Mario game ever. Can't wait to use Yoshi in 3D.

GoldenPhoenixFebruary 24, 2010

A fully realized Yoshi in a 3D Mario game would be a great accomplishment in itself.

EnnerFebruary 24, 2010

This is absolutely such a surprise that this game is coming out so soon!

Armak88February 24, 2010

Wow, I am almost instantly excited about this game...

Sounds good. I may not be able to resist getting this on the release date.

StogiFebruary 24, 2010

First NSMB then Galaxy 2

all within 6 months?

...the new SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 TRAILER!

Mop it upFebruary 24, 2010

I just hope Yoshi is a bigger part of the game than in New Super Mario Brothers Wii (which looks to be the case). I think he was available in five, maybe six stages total.

I don't want to alarm anybody, but I'm actually kind of exci....

...nah, I don't want to ruin my image.

Don't worry, we know you love Mario Galaxy really.

Speaking of which, I think you had ought to at least complete the game with 60 stars before this new one is released. What's your current progress?

CalibanFebruary 25, 2010

I didn't expect the game to come out so early, but I'm even more excited now.

D_AverageFebruary 25, 2010

Man, I gotta grab those last nine stars in the first Galaxy, just won't feel right starting the second game without them.

I AM EXCITE!

I wonder if Nintendo is front-loading its line-up this year so it can sell throughout the year a la 2008, or if they have some big guns later in the year. I know Zelda is on their schedule, but I have to think there's something else we don't know about yet.....

BlackNMild2k1February 26, 2010

One of those 2 RPG are likely coming soon, my guess would be Xenoblade.
Then there is always what Retro is working on, Factor 5 supposedly has 2 Nintendo projects in the pipes and Kirby Wii is still TBA ;)

Isn't Factor 5 pretty much dead?

BlackNMild2k1February 26, 2010

No, well.... at least I don't think so, but I don't think anyone is 100% sure what is going on with them right now.

We know they opened a new branch called White Harvest LLC, and we know they are/were working on 2 Nintendo Wii games one of which was in collaboration with Nintendo. Those are the 2 games they took with them and supposedly ceased all development on all other project. (this is all in the Rumor thread somewhere BTW). Not to mention that Rogue Squadron Wii has popped up on retailer listings in the UK and that is one of the games we know they were working on for Wii at some point and was rumored to be the other game they took with them besides whatever they were working on for Nintendo.
