New Super Mario Bros. Wii a strong performer in its first day of release.

According to the Sinobi Retail Blog in Japan, Wii games are performing well so far this month.

In its first day of release, New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold 422,000 copies, outperforming Super Mario Galaxy's first week of sales (256,000 copies sold). With three more days of release, New Super Mario Bros. Wii could hit more than 500,000 copies sold, joining Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, and Capcom's Monster Hunter 3 as Wii titles that sold over 500,000 copies within a week of release.

Samurai Warriors 3 also received strong sales, shifting 81,000 copies in its first day. The Classic Controller Pro bundle of the game is sold out due to low shipments.

Galaxy is a better game  :@

I love NSMBW but Galaxy was such an epic fresh adventure, this is a fantastic but doesn't really revolutionize 2d mario games just is one excellent version of it.

I never played anything like Galaxy before. So fun, so new, yet familiar.

Galaxy is a better game

Nope.

Though the presentation in Galaxy is better, I do think both games deserve just about a perfect 10 for being nothing but pure entertainment.  But that's just me.

As for Japan goes, I'll say it again, they seem to accept the 2D Mario titles way over the 3D ones. And the fact that this game can be considered a party game? You know they are going to eat it up!

There is a similar trend with Zelda to isn't there? Haven't the handheld games been performing better than the console games?

I think if games like Galaxy(Zelda to) or future 3D Mario's want sales numbers like NSMB/W they are going to need multiplayer.
And not phony extra Wii pointer multiplayer or phony Tingle GBA multiplayer either, but real deal NSMBW multiaplayer.

It is very obvious with Galaxy, Wind Waker, NSMBW, and 4 Swords, that Nintendo is trying to make multiplayer in the core titles of these franchises. Remember the interviews about Miyamoto trying to have Mario and Luigi running around in the same 3D space but it just wasn't working?  Well you can bet that those ideas must come up often and now they are seriously trying to get those things running. I mean the co-op element of NSMBW adds such an amazing new element to Mario, I do not want to see another 2D Mario without it.

And these co-op platformers will sell way more than the single player ones that's for sure. Applying the same ideas from 2D to 3D could work for Mario I'm sure, how multiplayer could work in Zelda where the other person actually feels important seems very difficult but it is gonna happen sooner or later. After the draw of motion controls for the next console,  I just know full on multiplayer maybe 2 players for an entire Mario or Zelda Adventure will be the latest draw.

So? What does that have to do with anything?

Galaxy and NSMB Wii are completely different takes on the Mario universe. They should be viewed as different entities. Its all a matter of preference.

From a player's perspective I'd agree, but a critical perspective must weigh all aspects of a game. In that case I don't think that NSMBWii deserves a 10 and any critical thinker won't give it one. Galaxy might deserve it though, it's hard to say on that one.

In NSMB Wii's case is multiplayer the real draw is it merely that it's a 2D Mario and that's probably what most people prefer?  NSMB on the DS doesn't have multiplayer and it was a huge success as well.  Personally the 2D gameplay was the draw for me.  That sort of gameplay is not very common on consoles these days (I love LittleBigPlanet for the same reason; though this is probably heresy to most Mario fans).

The multiplayer in NSMB Wii actually kind of blows.  Although it is still pretty fun in a chaotic sort of way, making any sort of progress with four players is a lot of work as you get killed by idiots jumping on your head in mid-air or kicking turtle shells at you by accident or my personal pet peeve: standing still in front on me in an area where I have to make a running jump right this second or I get killed and I miss the jump because I couldn't built up momentum with you blocking me like you're doing a goddamn pick in basketball.  FUCK!  Anyway I find the game is better in single player.  So I wonder if the multiplayer is a true draw when it pretty much amounts to stupid or selfish friends fucking you over the whole time.

"NSMB on the DS doesn't have multiplayer"

huh

Ian agree with the 4 player multi, I was very annoyed with it. 2 player was much better.
But 4 player coin battle seems like it would be loads of fun, because the goal would be to get in each others way as you fight for the coins.

Oh shit, did it have multiplayer?  I don't even remember.  Well it isn't like NSMB Wii's multiplayer anyway.
