Old and new fans can experience Sonic's first four Genesis adventures on Nintendo's portable next year.

Sega announced that Sonic Classic Collection – featuring Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles – is coming to the Nintendo DS in spring 2010.

Along with the four Genesis games, Sonic Classic Collection will incorporate a save feature for all the games, a first for the first two entries in the series. There will also be a video that gives players an in-depth look at the history of Sonic the Hedgehog.

"The Sonic Classic Collection will introduce a whole new generation of gamers to this beloved Hedgehog and take them back to his humble beginnings," said Sean Ratcliffe, vice president of marketing for Sega of America.

There is no word on whether or not the game will make use of the lock-on technology present in Sonic & Knuckles, which added bonus content to the other three games.

Talkback

I wonder which series has had more re-releases, Mario or Sonic.

Just a guess, but Sonic.  Mario's been released on virtually every Nintendo Platform - but that's limited to Nintendo.  Sonic has been whored out to anything with a screen and a controller.  And then some.

Just for fun, here are all the ways I could find that you can play the original Sonic:

Genesis
Master System (although this is slightly different)
Game Boy Advance (as Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis)
Sonic Classics 3-in-1 (a 1995 compilation cartridge for Genesis)
Genesis 6-Pak (a 1996 compilation cartridge for Genesis)
Sonic Jam (1997 compilation disc for Saturn)
Sega Smash Pack (compilation disc for Dreamcast)
Sonic Mega Collection (GameCube)
Sonic Mega Collection Plus (Xbox/PS2/PC)
Sega Genesis Collection (PS2/PSP)
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (Xbox 360/PS3)
Virtual Console (both the original Genesis and Master System versions)
Xbox Live Arcade (enhanced port known as Sonic The Hedgehog Arcade)
iPod Touch/iPhone
GameTap
PlayStation Network

I don't think even Super Mario Bros. has been re-released that many times.

Don't forget those dedicated Genesis-in-a-controller TV devices, the Sega download service, and various earlier PC compilations.
I think the only Nintendo game that comes close is not Super Mario Bros., but the original Mario Bros.

That's because Mario has actually had great sequels whereas with Sonic they have to keep re-releasing the old games in order to release a good Sonic game for that system.

StratosDecember 02, 2009

I only count 5 versions of SMB:
NES original
SNES Mario All-Stars
GBC Super Mario Brothers DX
GBA NES Classic Collection
Virtual Console edition

Not nearly as many so far as I recall.

If this has the S&K lock-on content included somehow I will probably go for it.

He said Mario Bros, the arcade game. It's in all of the SMA carts and as a pre-NES arcade game has ports to pretty much every console and computer that was around in those days (just regular cross-platform releases get a TON of versions just from all the available hardware). I wouldn't count SMB3's battle mode since that was played to different rules.

Either way, I just saw a 30 game handheld Mega Drive for 30€ at Aldi (there are also the Mega Drive collections Sega threw out there for various systems that would theoretically destroy the value of MD games on the VC), how exactly are they planning to beat that offer with a 40€ DS game that only gets 4 games?

i wonder if TheRat would be happy or pissed about this news...

I've got to agree with Stratos. I will most likely buy this if it has the lock-on content.

They aren't.  Things like Virtual Console proved that unnecessary.
