Every superstar DJ out there should take note.

Earlier this week, Activision revealed the complete set list for their upcoming title DJ Hero. The list is comprised of a whopping 93 songs in total, with each entry typically a mash-up of two disparate musical genres.

Hip-hop fans will definitely be pleased, with several tracks each by Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Public Enemy, Cypress Hill, and the Beastie Boys in the mix. But there's a little something for everyone, with Gwen Stefani, Daft Punk, Foreigner, Queen, The Jackson 5, and Rihanna also figuring prominently. For the full set list, see the press release below.

DJ Hero ships for Wii on October 27.

DJ Hero is not for me, simply as my tastes in music do not align whatsoever with this set list. For people who do like these genres, however, I reckon this would be worth it. I like the controller and what Activision has done with the usual note chart gameplay, but the songs... not so much. Pass.

I do like the set list but i still won't be getting this. The main reasons?

-price
-more peripherals

I'd love to give it a try though..

I agree completely.

Also, for completeness:

*continues waiting*

Yeah, I am so sick of peripherals.  For crying out loud, I only have so much space in my apartment.  What bothers me is that Activision realizes that they can charge more for, and make more money off of, games that have peripherals, so nowadays practically EVERY game has to have a peripheral whether it's warranted or not.  If the game itself doesn't need one, every title has to have some ludicrous $150 Collector's Edition with over-the-top swag.

It's so contrived.

I really want to try this game, but there's not going to be demo or GameFly rentals, so how will I know if I'll like it? It's too big an investment to take the risk without ever playing it once.

You guys don't share review copies?

I would like to see a review by someone that's not as exactly into the music as much the next guy for comparison purposes.

I don't know about that.  DJ Hero is pretty squarely aimed at afficionados of the urban and electronic genres, so I'd think that said afficionados would actually give it the harshest critiques.

I hit up the Best Buy at Flat Irons, they've got a nice set up for it.  I was very curious about this game as I love all and any music, but 5 mins with it completely sucked out any enthusiasm I had.  I felt the gameplay was a joke, makes Guitar Hero look like the Gran Tourism of guitar sims.  But hey, too each his own, some in the industry obviously dig it.

What didn't you like about it in particular?  It sounds like it's pretty robotic and stiff.

D_AverageOctober 13, 2009

Mainly the fact that the vast majority of the button presses line up with the beat rather than actual scratching. It just feels so silly. You may as well play the game with a purple dinosaur covered in chocolate and buttons.

As unrealistic as Guitar Hero is the leap from reality here is about 10x that, and as you said, comes across contrived. I think even many non musicians will have trouble making the escapism jump on this one. The gameplay just doesn't translate which is a shame as DJ Shadow created one of my all time favorite LP's.
