Four-player platforming has never looked so good.

One of the biggest features in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the ability to play with up to three other players and co-operate (or sometimes compete) in order to beat the level.

This new trailer from PAX showcases four-player platforming and the things that can be accomplished when brotherly love is brought to the table.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is set to be released on November 15th in North America.

Talkback

I still think 2 Toads seems a bit lazy.
I don't know who else they should have included, but I hope there is at least 1 other unlockable character in the game to play as.
Maybe Princess Peach after you beat it or something.

Gimme Bowser to play with.

That's a toughie

Wario/Waluigi - evil, wouldn't make sense
Bowser - too big, levels would have to be redesigned with him in mind
Peach - She's the one you're rescuing (although I like BlackNMild's idea)
Koopas - Koopas killing Koopas - madness!
All other Mario Kart type characters, Donkey Kong etc wouldn't fit the theme

All thats left is Toad, maybe Toadette, Daisy, Rosalina?

Pah, I give up

KDR_11kOctober 04, 2009

Hell, Toadette would work better than just another Toad with different colors. Rosalina just doesn't fit, Daisy maybe. There have been friendly Koopas and such in the Paper Mario games so they aren't all evil. Or, if in doubt, invent a new character!

Not only that, but one of the Toads isn't even the red-spotted, blue-vested Toad that we all know and love!

Wario was playable in Super Mario 64 DS so the "he's evil" thing obviously isn't a factor. I think that the developer focus was on the level designs and such which is why the character selection is lacking.

If anyone's noticed, this trailer is practically a carbon copy of the trailer from E3. Both start with the propeller suit on a grassland level, then it's penguin suit in an ice level, then underwater, then Mario uses the spin to blow away clouds, then Mario and Luigi in a desert level with erupting sand, etc. Same level themes and situations in the same exact order.

Love the trailer, can't wait for the game. I agree with everyone on the Toads -- one is enough.

I noticed they changed the score font. It looks more Mario-ish.

Oh god no.

It should be Yoshi. I'd laugh my ass off every time I jumped onto another one.

But that'd only work if you could stack yoshis.

At least it's an update.  HUD has been updated, enemy placement was tweaked, and some stages actually include additional platforms/geometry in this new build.  The gameplay that was recorded is also unique to this video, and not lifted from the E3 video.

Great, now I picture a Yoshi orgy with this post. Thanks KDR. >:/

Then they could Yoshi Vomit at the same time and become a new take on Castlevania's fire-breathing dragon skulls.

Fruit Punch Vomit Orgy

I take great comfort in the fact that because this game has no online capabilities the chances of me ever participating in a 4-player game is approximate zero, thereby negating the problem with having two Toad characters.

So it's New Super Mare-eeoh Bros. Wiithout Useless 3rd/4th Wheel Toad Characters for you?  A tru Mario Bros. game.

Why wouldn't Donkey Kong fit?  He's already established as hero in his own platform games and unlike Wario isn't regarded as a bad guy.  And even if you regard him and Mario as rivals it would take little effort to come up with "joins forces" plotline.  This could apply to Wario as well.

I think we get two Toads for the same reason that Nintendo storylines are usually very weak and pay no attention to continuity: Nintendo just doesn't care about that stuff.  As fans we have a connection with these characters but it's very clear that Nintendo sees them more as trademarks.  The focus is on the gameplay and level design.  So Bowser just kidnaps the Princess, again, and the two other characters are generic Toads because that's the bare minimum effort required.  Nintendo sees that part of game development as a minor requirment that isn't worth focusing on.

I prefer their mentality to developers that have a story-first focus, who end up making glorified interactive movies.  But I like a balance of story and gameplay.  There really is no reason to neglect one in favour of the other.

"There really is no reason to neglect one in favour of the other."

There really is no reason to forget one and only focus on the other.

there I fixed that statement for you.

KDR_11kOctober 06, 2009

DK moves too differently from Mario or Luigi, he's got stronger arms and tends to use those more. Wario could work though he tends to use his fists more than his feet. But hey, there've been tons of friendly NPCs throughout the series, surely we can just use one of those? Make one toad Toadsworth?

NinGurl69 *hugglesOctober 06, 2009

DK is like 5X the size of Mario.  He would require 3players to control him alone.
