Sonic and friends return to the racing genre in a new game that features online play, and special power-ups and weapons.

Sonic the Hedgehog is no stranger to racing games, having appeared in Sonic R on the Saturn and the Sonic Riders series. Today, Sega revealed that Sonic is ready to race again in the new game, Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing, which is slated to appear on all major platforms including Wii and DS.

A lot of familiar faces will be appearing in the title, including Amigo, Super Monkey Ball's AiAi, Tails, and Dr. Robotnik. Each selectable character will have a custom vehicle that can be anything from a banana mobile to an airplane. Players will need to look out for hidden shortcuts, and carefully use weapons and power-ups to be the first across the finish line.

To help players who are trailing far behind, the game will feature All-Star Moves like Banana Blitz, Tails Tornado, and Super Sonic. In addition, multiplayer action can be had in either the eight player online mode or at home with four player split-screen mayhem.

It is currently unknown if the game is being developed internally at Sega, or by a company like Sumo Digital, who worked on Sega Superstars Tennis and the home ports of the OutRun series.

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is scheduled for release in 2010. A new trailer is embedded below:

Announcing Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing

EVERYBODY’S Super Sonic Racing… or they soon will be. We’ve just announced a new title coming to PS3, 360, Wii and DS in 2010 - Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing.

In a frantic battle to the chequered flag, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing sees Sonic and friends speed around tracks set in mediaeval castle ramparts, lush rainforests and bustling cities, all taken from the visually rich and varied universes of Sonic and SEGA. Fan favourites such as Dr. Eggman, Tails, AiAi, Amigo and many more will join Sonic in their custom built vehicles, revving their engines and jostling to stay ahead of the pack. Each character will race around the track in cars, planes, motorbikes, and in AiAi’s case - a banana mobile! Secret short cuts, swift handling and avoiding strategically placed obstacles are certainly the best way to get to the top of the podium.

"Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is no ordinary racing game. Its huge variety of characters and vehicles, plus the ability to play both online and off set it apart from other games of this type" commented Gary Knight European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe Ltd. "The team have pushed the boundaries on what you would normally expect and created a different and unique party racing title whereby you really can’t take anything for granted!"

And winning is only part of the fun in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing! Each character has a specific All Star move such as Super Sonic, Banana Blitz and Tails Tornado, allowing a quick way for competitors to get back into the race! Power ups and weapons can also be collected around the tracks and used against the opposition to ensure they don’t become a threat to that number one position… Players can battle it out in single or multiplayer mode, allowing up to four friends to race in frantic split-screen action, or up to eight players to compete online in the ultimate racing showdown.

Talkback

Considering characters like AiAi appeared in Sonic Riders, I have to think this game is an extension and re-branding of that series.

I'm interested unless development is by Sonic Team. If this shares any code or style with Sonic Riders, you can forget it.

Cool cinematics, but how about some gameplay footage?!

I'll agree with Jonny on this one. If Sumo Digital does it, I'll be interested. Sega Superstars Tennis turned out to be pretty decent.

This almost seems like some weird cross of Sonic Riders, Mario Kart, and Diddy Kong Racing.
Any word on if this will be playable at E3?

They won't show anything because it really sucks...?  ???

They probably haven't started that part, yet.

I wonder how fast Sega of Japan will whip the development team into getting done?

This had better be compatible with the Wii Wheel.

It's not like you use it anyway.

TJ SpykeMay 29, 2009

The video on iTunes looks OK. I wouldn't pay $50 for the game though, maybe $30.

Nobody likes Pearl Jam.

See I can make untrue statements too.

What's the problem with Riders?

StratosMay 30, 2009

I notice the name Robotnik is used in the article. Does that mean they are finally dropping the ridiculous Eggman name?

Also, why is Sonic even in a cart if he can run as fast as that? Make sonic run and the others can use cars.

I was wondering that, too. And if he did pick a car, would he really choose some big, boaty, tail-finned thang like that?

BlackNMild2k1May 30, 2009

Sonic should have some Flintstones like car, that way he has a vehicle and still uses his own natural speed at the same time.
It would look awkward f he was the only one without a vehicle.

I hated when they started using "Eggman" since it sound stupid, I was so happy when BioWare used Robotnik (which sounds more evil) for Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

It wouldn't be a fare race if Sonic could just run, he could finish the race like 10 times before anyone else even finished it once.

*rubs temples because these arguments make my head hurt that much*

1) SEGA of America has acknowledged both names since Sonic Adventure 1. They have said Robotnik is the family name (evidence: Sonic Adventure 2) and that Eggman is a nickname. All the manuals currently even state that. This is the most stupid complaint I've ever heard. Get over the Robotnik/Eggman name change. It's incredibly minor.

2) It's a SPIN-OFF game. Sonic's racing in a car because it's a racing game. Why do people get so uptight about this anyway? (I just KNOW I'm going to regret asking this one...)

Naw, I don't really care that much. Intuitively, it just didn't make much sense to me for him to be in a car. I guess it would stick out if he was the only one without one.

TJ SpykeMay 31, 2009

It's better than Sonic R, which had everybody racing on foot (which meant Sonic should have never lost).

KDR_11kMay 31, 2009

Now the big question: Who's faster, Sonic or the Road Runner?

PeachylalaMay 31, 2009

The Road Runner was in some of my favorite Looney Tunes cartoons.

Road Runner FTW.

In Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Sonic can lose the 100m dash to Bowser. Bowser.

I suppose I'll be the first person Jerk enough to ask when they're going to reveal the All-Stars that will be in this game.  I was under the impression that to be an "All-Star" you actually had to be a great character/person that is greatly beloved and desired from the fans.  I think we're long since past the point where anyone or anything from the Sonic franchise qualified as such.  So can I take it that we'll be seeing some Skies of Arcadia/Valkyria Chronicles characters in the game?  ;)

StratosMay 31, 2009

I want a new Skies game.

MesuJune 02, 2009

Hopefully this means Sega will make a Smash Bros copy with their characters after this since the last 2 Sega stars games were based on a Nintendo series.

Anyways for this game to be as game as it can be I hope the have a Crazy Taxi level with the authentic music(the probably won't want to pay for it though) and traffic. Also have Crazy Taxi drivers as racers.

They also should have Jet Set Radio characters skating with the rocket powered speed up you can use in JSRF constantly. These characters would have the best turning in the game but they would easily get pushed off the track by  other vehicles. Maybe they should be able to spray paint their opponents vehicles as they pass.

Skies of Arcadia characters should be in this game. They really should have been in Sega Superstar Tennis so Vyse and Aika could celebrate a team win with that high five/hand shake thing that they do.

They will all be Nintendo characters. its the only way the game will sell on the Wii.
