Nintendo bundles all the Metroid Prime games into one Wii-controlled package.

Today, Nintendo announced that they are planning to bundle the Wii versions of Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption this August.

Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, originally for the GameCube, will be enhanced with precise Wii Remote controls, a widescreen presentation, and other enhancements like they were in the Japanese Wii de Asobu Metroid Prime

versions.

Since all three games will be on a singe disc, players will be able to access any of the three games through a unified main menu. There will also be an unlockable system where players will be able to unlock music and artwork by completing specific in-game objectives across all three games.

Check out our impressions of the Japanese Wii remake of Metroid Prime.

Metroid Prime Trilogy is being developed by Retro Studios, who developed all three Metroid Prime games for the GameCube and Wii. The trilogy will be available on August 24 with a price point of $49.99.

THREE INCREDIBLE GAMES JUST GOT MORE AWESOME: METROID PRIME TRILOGY HEADS TO WII

All Three Critically Acclaimed Games Now Feature Motion Controls with Enhanced Presentation and In-Game Rewards

REDMOND, Wash., May 22, 2009 - Metroid™ Prime 3: Corruption set a new standard for first-person motion controls in video games. Now it's bringing those controls to the rest of the celebrated series, allowing players to experience the entire Metroid Prime story arc with the peerless precision of the Wii Remote™. Nintendo announces Metroid Prime Trilogy, a new premium three-game collection for the Wii™ console that bundles all three landmark Metroid Prime games onto one disc and revamps the first two installments with intuitive motion controls, wide-screen presentation and other enhancements. Metroid Prime Trilogy will be available exclusively for Wii on Aug. 24 at a suggested retail price of $49.99.

Each game maintains its original storyline and settings, but now Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes let players use their Wii Remote to aim with precision as heroine Samus Aran. Based on the breakthrough control system that debuted in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, these new Wii controls bring an entirely new level of immersion and freedom to these milestone games.

"Metroid Prime Trilogy puts the best first-person adventures all in one place, with a host of new additions that make these three timeless titles more engaging than ever," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "A great deal of care and detail has gone into Metroid Prime Trilogy, providing longtime fans with new ways to experience the games they love."

All three games now reside on a single disc. Players can access the game they want from a unified main menu that ties together all three adventures. Through a new unlockables system, players can gain access to in-game rewards such as music and artwork by accomplishing objectives across all three games.

Metroid Prime Trilogy was developed by Retro Studios and Nintendo, the same developers that created the original games for the Nintendo GameCube™ and Wii systems.

This is great news. Metroid Prime 3 is one of my favorite Wii games because of the controls.I'm pretty excited.

I guess this beats buying both Metroid Prime 1 and 2 NPC! for $30 each.

This is a move Nintendo isn't known for doing. I was very surprised since this is something the fans wanted ever since the NPC games were announced.

broodwarsMay 22, 2009

ok...so to buy the Wiimakes of Metroid Primes 1 and 2 (which I want), I have to also buy another copy of a game I already own (Metroid Prime 3).  Really, there was no other way?  Well, I guess that's trade-in credit towards Ghostbusters then.  If it wasn't for the price this would bother me a lot more than it does.  They would have sold MP1 and MP2 for $30 each anyway.

I still think that Nintendo will release NPC! MP and MP2 individually but who knows. Even if you want to buy MP1 and MP2 for Wii that's 60 dollars, the triology is 10 dollars less.

Indeed.  It's just that originally the only game I was going to get immediately was MP1 since I don't like MP2 all that much (but was willing to give it another chance with the Wiimake).  So that's $30 for the game I wanted vs. $50 for the game I wanted; the game I don't want immediately; and the game I already own.  It's not a big deal, just a little annoying.  If I didn't know better, I'd say Nintendo did this to ensure that people would actually buy Echoes.

vuduMay 22, 2009

Well, shit.  I only wanted to play the original Metroid Prime again.

Smart smart smart, NOA! You get a cookie! Малодец!

Those who already own these games: just trade in the original copies (now, before they lose more value) towards the trilogy disc.

This rocks. It would be very cool if Nintendo offered 15 dollars off for people who trade in their copy of Metroid Prime 3.

I checked, the trade-in price for Corruption on Amazon is $14, but that's bound to drop once this gets closer.

Man, these things really drop in price the minute you drive them off the self-destructing frigate.

Ian SaneMay 22, 2009

I don't like Wiimakes but if you're going to do it, do it like this.  This is probably the best way to do it.

Though while including all three games is ideal for newcomers it kind of sucks for anyone that already has the third game.

I really want to see something from Retro at E3 and it would really suck if THIS is what Retro has been working on.  It shouldn't be.  This shouldn't have been so complicated that it would take up all their time.  But you never know.

KDR_11kMay 22, 2009

From what I read the multiplayer mode in MP2 is a lot better with the Wiimote aim instead of the GC controls.

The problem with that logic is that it's not like it would be any cheaper if it were just 1 and 2, they're just throwing 3 in as a bonus.

People should be infuriated, I mean why would you want to pay $50 for 3 games (one that is pretty new) instead of $60 for two games? I am so MAD.

RizeDavid Trammell, Staff AlumnusMay 22, 2009

I'm pretty sure I don't want this.  I love the original two Prime's just the way they are.  The only thing I'm remotely interested in is the wide screen.  If I do want this someday, I'm quite sure that 3 or 4 years from now I'll be able to pick up a copy on the cheap.

BranDonk KongMay 22, 2009

True, then again this appears to the common practice now (Capcom is king of it). I'd have no problem if they sold the two separately.

it would be nice if they added online  to the multiplayer in Prime 2. It was kind of fun, but limited

Right, cuz when you combine them individually, you form a pseudo `box set` that collectors love.  Having each individual entry is beauty, but one can't disregard the appeal of a super-compact all-in-one edition.

This tears me apart if I try to buy DVDs online, do I get the big collector's box edition or the super slim case edition?

Meh, it'd be nice if it was there but I could live without it.  I'd rather they spent their time putting fun into the game, a feature that got cut from the original release due to lack of time and an inexplicable drive to make the game "darker" and more challenging than the original (something that was a bit of a plague going around at the time, as it also hit Prince of Persia around the same time).

Challenge is fun, especially when there's no explicit hints like the classics.  The rest of you can stick to hand-holding story games.

As I said in the other thread, I am happy about this. I already planned to get NPC! Metroid Prime and was thinking about NPC! Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. I might trade in my copy of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, I am just wondering if my save file will work on the Metroid Prime Trilogy version of the game.

If I read the IGN hands-on correctly it can import your old game saves.

>I just reread the article and I don't think they were saying you could import old saves anymore.

BlackNMild2k1May 22, 2009

It will import my saves from MP1 & MP2? how? can the Wii read GC memory cards while in Wii mode?
If that is the case, then I will go trade these in towards WSR this weekend. I can just finish MP2 later and finish the final boss fight on MP1 sometime after that.

NinGurl69 *hugglesMay 22, 2009

Better backtrack on that, BnM.

~~~~~
Wii games can access every GC/Wii function; GC games are stuck in pretend-GC mode.
Tales of Symphonia 2 is able to read GC save files from the first game for unlockable bonuses.
Fire Emblem Wii also read files from the GC memory card. Plus the Wii DDR games use Gamecube dance pads. If only Wii games would use the silly bongos I invested in for Donkey Kong games.
BlackNMild2k1May 22, 2009
It would be funny if NPC DKJB could use the bongos as an alternate control.
but, you guys are saying that MP triology (hehehe) will use my GC saves even though the new games have achievements?
just want to be clear.
Who cares if it can read your GC save files? The point is to play through the games again. I think the hard modes are already unlocked in 1/2 on Wii.
BlackNMild2k1May 22, 2009
I care. I'm at the final boss on MP1 and I've been playing MP2 alot recently (about 70% done) and don't want to really repeat the light/dark madness all over again. But I would like to finish both games with the superior control scheme. If I can go back and play them on hard after that, then great, but I would mostly be buying it to get MP3 since I've been holding off on it till I atleast got to the end of MP2.
I agree with Metroid Primes 1 and 2, especially since they went to all the trouble to add Achievements to those things.  It'd be a real waste to just skip right over that with your GC save files.  I do kind of hope that Metroid Prime 3's save file carries over, because my best friend borrowed the game; got bored just before reaching the Pirate Homeworld; and now is playing a bunch of other stuff.  I'd rather not rush him through MP3 when he doesn't want to play it just so I can have the game back and the subsequent trade-in credit.  I'd rather he could just use his MP3 file on the new version.
Mop it upMay 22, 2009
This is another announcement I wouldn't have guessed would happen. This is pretty awesome. You can get both Metroid Prime games for cheaper than they would be as NPC games, plus you get the third game. It's great for people who haven't gotten the third game yet, great for people who missed the first two, and even great for those who are itching to replay the first two games with Wii controls. It's win-win for a lot of people really.
I'm kind of curious as to why they didn't wait to announce this until E3. It really makes me wonder if they are going to have any game announcements or just showcase Wii Motion +.
Ian SaneMay 22, 2009
I'd say reading the Metroid Prime 3 save should be an expected feature and if Retro doesn't offer it you have a right to complain.  It's the same game on the same system.  You should be able to import your save.  But with the other two?  With the changes they had to make importing your save might not be so easy.  I would consider it unrealistic to expect that feature.
It depends on how they have the save file system set up.  If they have it designed so all three games save into one massive save file, then I can see it not importing the Metroid Prime 3 data...maybe.
Mop it upMay 22, 2009
The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition has separate save files for each game, so it is certainly possible.
BlackNMild2k1May 22, 2009
I'm not saying that I'm expecting GC save import ability, but I wanna know if its gonna be possible before I go and trade in my games before they lose their trade in value. Its a matter of being able to pick up where I left off or completely start over. I wanna pick up where I left off with new controls (even though I know achievements might make that difficult), but if I have to beat them on GC to not have to start over, I just wanna know that now and not afterwards.
TJ SpykeMay 22, 2009
Considering the original Metroid Prime is about $5 in most stores, the trade-in value would be like $1 max. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes isn't much higher. The only one with any real trad-in value is Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
BlackNMild2k1May 22, 2009
either way, I still wanna know if I should hurry and beat it now, or just say F*** IT and start over with NPC
After I saw what they wanted to give me for 8 GC games the other day @ GS I'm not surprised at the trade-in values.
Ian SaneMay 22, 2009
Quote:
Yeah I find it kinda funny that everyone talks about what a great deal this trilogy is, yet the individual games are priced at clearance bin prices.  I can find both Cube games for like 8 bucks (Canadian) each with minimal effort.
Maybe Nintendo realizes that and that's why they bundled these together.  Pikmin 2 on the other hand is much harder to find used and commands a higher price so Nintendo may have felt they could easily get away with releasing that series as seperate products.
This is insta-buy territory for me.  Hopefully Amazon will have a $39.99 deal on it like they did with Punch-Out!!, since I have all three games already and don't want to pay full price for the trilogy.  However, I'm going to keep all three original games - the collector in me wouldn't have it any other way.
I got nearly $20 for trading in the three separate games, so the compilation will effectively cost me the same as one Wiimake would have.
So, I played MP3 on my 50" Plasma for the first time.  I was shocked by how great it looks.  I mean, RE4 looks like dirt, Mario Sunshine wasn't too hot and Zelda was pretty terrible looking.  Retro are just geniuses I guess.
I also found the motion control a lot more awesome on the giant screen.  The one negative however, upon close examination, there are two tiny black bars on the left and right side of the image.  wtf... burn-in city, thanks Retro.  They're at least half an inch each.
Anyway, Retro's artist never cease to amaze me.  I remembered wondering if Prime 1 and 2 would still look impressed after playing Doom 3.  Hell, they still look impressive today.
EntroperMay 30, 2009
I was reading TYP's comments on the Japanese Wii-make of MP1: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=27441.0
It sounds to me as if it gives you two difficulty options when you first begin, Normal and Veteran.  In the original MP1, you couldn't choose, it was just "normal", and then you unlocked Hard after beating the game.  In MP3, you start with Normal and Veteran available, and can unlock Hyper difficulty.  I'm wondering if Wii-made MP1 Veteran corresponds to original MP1 "normal", and if you can unlock something that corresponds to original MP1 Hard.  MP3's Normal was ridiculously easy, which would be great news to my girlfriend.  She enjoyed Zero Mission on Easy difficulty and seems interested in the Primes, but, well, they're pretty tough.
EDIT: Screenshot at Nintendo's official site: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/7y8SXfbq4nlR_ZO15BY3yHdKL7erLAnk#images
I think (hope?) this confirms my suspicions, since the three circles on the left of each save file are the same as the ones in MP3.
