Nintendo celebrates the first birthday of WiiWare by showcasing its best titles.
Nintendo's downloadable service WiiWare went live in North America a year ago yesterday. As a counterpart to the Wii's Virtual Console, WiiWare features weekly releases of original games.
Nintendo is celebrating this landmark by showcasing some of the best and most popular titles available on the service. 2D Boy's World of Goo has proven to be the service's most successful game. It earned rave reviews and earned many Game of the Year awards. It remains one of the most downloaded titles on the service.
Lost Winds was one of the titles released at launch and it received a lot of praise for its unique concept and innovative uses of the Wii Remote.
Telltale Game's Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, based on the Flash cartoon Homestar Runner, has also seen success on WiiWare, becoming the first episodic game series to appear on a console through downloadable means.
Mega Man 9 was one of the most anticipated titles on WiiWare since it was the first true sequel to a Mega Man game in years. Not only did it look like a NES game, but it had downloadable content that added new challenges and a new playable character.
Other titles Nintendo is celebrating are WayForward's LIT, Square Enix's Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as King, Tetris Online's Tetris Party, Nintendo's own Dr. Mario Online RX and Bonsai Barber.
Nintendo also made note of several upcoming releases, such as Nicali's Cave Story, Super Meat Boy from Team Meat, Icarian Kindred Spirits from Over the Top Games, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years from Square Enix, Adventure Island: The Beginning from Hudson Soft and BIT.TRIP CORE from Aksys Games.

WiiWare Continues to Deliver Great New Games to Consumers
REDMOND, Wash., May 12, 2009 – WiiWare™, the downloadable video game service for Nintendo's Wii™ home console, launched one year ago today. It arrived with a promise to provide a venue for game developers to showcase their ideas, while delivering to consumers the newest, most interesting games available at accessible prices, directly through the Wii Shop Channel in their Wii consoles. With 81 games in its library, WiiWare ensures that there's something for everyone. But beyond quantity, WiiWare offers quality games and experiences for all types of Wii owners.
WiiWare removes barriers that make console game development expensive, and helps developers connect directly with consumers. WiiWare games have been created by more than 40 different development studios, from large companies to small startups. In fact, more than half the games in the WiiWare library were created and self-published by small independent studios, many with five or fewer employees.
