You've always known it's true, but now it's truly true. UPDATED with press release and lone piece of art!

The cover of the June issue of Nintendo Power finally confirms what has been an open secret for a while now: Red Steel 2 is coming to Wii. The teaser text on the cover ("Finally, wielding a sword in a Wii game feels as real as you'd always dreamed!") also seems to confirm the July 2008 report that it will feature Wii MotionPlus compatibility. Other details are scarce at the moment, but Nintendo World Report will provide more details as soon as they are available.

Red Steel 2 is being developed by Ubisoft Paris, and currently has no scheduled release date.

UPDATE: Ubisoft's official press release confirms that the game will take place in a "desert-bound high-tech metropolis."

UBISOFT® UNSHEATHES RED STEEL® 2

Sword-and-Gun Action Fighting Title to Return at Holiday 2009

SAN FRANCISCO – April 29, 2009 – Today Ubisoft announced Red Steel 2, exclusively for the Wii™ system from Nintendo. Red Steel remains one of the most successful Wii titles and the only brand created specifically for the launch of the platform. Red Steel 2 is being developed by Ubisoft Paris and will be available for the 2009 holiday season.

Red Steel 2 returns with an artistic style and flair created just for Wii. Set in a desert-bound, high-tech metropolis, Red Steel 2 is a revolution in the action-fighting genre, taking full advantage of the capabilities of the Wii MotionPlus™ accessory. Your movements are faithfully replicated on-screen, putting the emphasis on swinging, shooting and fun! With the ability of the Wii MotionPlus to sense the strength of a swing, you will literally be able to make an impact on your adversaries through power and precision.

"Red Steel was a unique opportunity for Ubisoft to work in tandem with Nintendo to create a title exclusively for the launch of the Wii console," said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing US at Ubisoft. "Red Steel 2 is another milestone for the company as it is the first Ubisoft title with full Wii MotionPlus integration.”

Just as Red Steel broke ground as the only third-party brand created for the launch of the Wii, Red Steel 2 will be the must-have game of Holiday 2009 for those who wish to stretch their own capacities and fully experience a game that was built from the ground up to take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus.

More details on Red Steel 2 will be revealed in the June issue of Nintendo Power magazine. For more information on Red Steel 2, please visit www.redsteel2.com.

I think it has been truly true since last July, when Ubisoft said it was truly true.

GoldenPhoenixApril 28, 2009

I bet it comes out this holiday.

ShyGuyApril 28, 2009

:'( It's so beautiful...

Did they ever say that though? I thought it was just a job posting and people assumed it was for Red Steel 2.

Even though we've known it for awhile, uh, that's it. We've known it will use Wii MotionPlus and we knew Ubisoft Paris was developing it.

This has been truly true since 2007.

Hopefully for Ubisoft's sake this one features less suck. I know I won't be giving it the benefit of the doubt, but if reviews are solid enough I just may spring for it eventually.

Yeah let's see if Ubi can manage competency.

EnnerApril 28, 2009

Ubi managing competency, eh? Most of their big-ticket games these past few years seem to have critical issues that prevent the game from reaching greatness (or goodness).

With Assassin's Creed 2 and Red Steel 2, I hope that the respective teams takes criticisms to heart.

NWR_pap64Pedro Hernandez, Contributing WriterApril 28, 2009

Assassin's Creed needed an ending.

Red Steel needed better controls.

Both should be easy to solve.

Michael8983April 29, 2009

Weren't there rumors that this was cancelled by Ubisoft, supposedly because the Wii was too "casual" - the usual BS.
Glad that wasn't the case. The original Red Steel sold well despite sucking if the sequel is at least a "pretty good game" and sells just as well it will definitly help the Wii's image problem.

Sadness will be sitting on the shelf next to "Earthbound Trilogy" for DS.

Anyways...........

With Wii motion plus this game should play like a dream. Also FPS controls have been solved already so thats not a concern.

Apparently from scans of the magazine it now has a WESTERN THEME which I approve since the story seemed very generic.

ZOMG!

Click the link in the article.  A Ubisoft exec confirmed the game and MotionPlus support, way back in July 2008.  There is no new info at this time.

ShyGuyApril 29, 2009

Actually, new info is it's cell shaded and has no multi-player. Not confirmed though.

So with this desert-bound high-tech metropolis theme they have in mind, should i assume that Ubi is trying to give RS2 that "truley true" "next"gen look, without the HD of course? Or will there be other colors besides the usual shades of brown?

SpinnzillaApril 30, 2009

There will probably be TONS of boom lighting.

Hmm, Boom Lighting would be interesting. You could only see by the light of explosions you make.

Update: Apparently MSN Brazil leaked the footage and most likely broke a lot of NDAs, so expect all the youtube mirrors of the videos to be down soon.

NinGurl69 *hugglesMay 04, 2009

Good job with this pretend leak, Ubi.

Looks pretty cool in that trailer!  I can't wait to try it.

CalibanMay 04, 2009

Thanks for the YouTube link F_o_C. The other link wasn't loading the video for me.

Destination Playstation? Hmm that's way to suspicious. I would go as far as to say this trailer is bogus just because of that.

GoldenPhoenixMay 04, 2009

The trailer looks like it has gameplay and cinema mixed together. What I like about it is that trailer seems to indicate they have not forgotten about the shooter side of Red Steel

NinGurl69 *hugglesMay 04, 2009

Wii doesn't produce textures and details that sharp.  The only game being played was the script inside the actor's head.

Pro is jealous that it looks better then NMH.

NinGurl69 *hugglesMay 04, 2009

So does MLaaK, but that doesn't make "game footage" here legit.

That slow moment just before the pistol fired looked more like Ubi's work in PoP 360 than any Wii game to date.
