The very first video game to features Beatles music will arrive next year from the creators of Rock Band.

MTV Games, Apple Corps, and Harmonix recently announced that they are working together to deliver a video game centered on Beatles music. Harmonix, the developers of Guitar Hero 1 & 2 and the Rock Band series, will be creating the game. Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon, and Olivia Harrison fully support the game. Giles Martin--son of Sir George Martin, who produced most of the Beatles records--has signed on as Music Producer for the game. Variety reports that Harmonix will be able to include 45 Beatles songs from the years 1962-1969 when the band recorded at the label EMI.

The Untitled Beatles Music Game is slated to appear in 2009. It is not currently known what consoles the game will debut on.

The Beatles Inspire New Music Video Game; Apple Corps Ltd., MTV and Harmonix Come Together for Unprecedented Deal

NEW YORK, Oct 30, 2008 -- Exclusive Agreement Set to Bring The Beatles Music to Fans for the First Time in Interactive Form Here, There and Everywhere in 2009

The Beatles' extraordinary music and phenomenal legacy is set to rock across the universe in the form of a video game through an exclusive partnership between Apple Corps Ltd., Harmonix and MTV Games, a part of Viacom's MTV Networks.

This partnership marks the first time that Apple Corps, along with EMI Music, Harrisongs Ltd, and Sony/ATV Music Publishing, has agreed to present The Beatles music in an interactive video game format. Published by MTV Games and developed by Harmonix, the world's premier music video game company and creators of the best-selling Rock Band(R), the game will be an unprecedented, experiential progression through and celebration of the music and artistry of The Beatles. The game was creatively conceived with input from Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, and enjoys their full blessing. In addition, Giles Martin, co-producer of The Beatles innovative LOVE project, will provide his expertise and serve as Music Producer for this groundbreaking Beatles project.

"The project is a fun idea which broadens the appeal of The Beatles and their music. I like people having the opportunity to get to know the music from the inside out," Sir Paul McCartney said.

"It gives me great pleasure to be part of The Beatles / Apple and Harmonix / Rock Band partnership," said Ringo Starr. "The Beatles continue to evolve with the passing of time and how wonderful that The Beatles' legacy will find its natural progression into the 21st century through the computerized world we live in. Let the games commence."

"It's cool. I love it and hope it will keep inspiring and encouraging the young generation for many decades," said Yoko Ono Lennon.

"People are having so much fun playing Rock Band. Combined with The Beatles tracks, it is a great way to either listen or participate," said Olivia Harrison. "If you like the music, it doesn't take much persuasion to get you to play."

"Introducing the genius of The Beatles to a whole new generation of music lovers through original and inspired ways is extremely exciting to us at Apple Corps," stated Jeff Jones, CEO, Apple Corps. "We are truly pleased to be working with the innovative forces at MTV and Harmonix as they embody our mutual passions for music and creativity."

"Many of us have been part of a generation that has long enjoyed an enduring love affair with The Beatles and now we're looking to extend that love affair for future generations to enjoy," said Van Toffler. "Our inspiration for this project comes from a keen sense of history and a place of utmost reverence and respect for the band, their music and their heritage."

"The impact of The Beatles is forever ingrained in the hearts, minds and souls of millions the world over," said Judy McGrath, Chairman and CEO of MTV Networks. "The Beatles are the reason many of us are WHERE we are, and some of us are WHO we are."

"We are honored to be part of this new way for people to discover the timeless music and art of The Beatles -- the most creatively and commercially successful, critically acclaimed, and influential band in the history of popular music," stated Paul DeGooyer, MTV's Senior Vice President of Electronic Games & Music.

"By presenting their music and artistry through the creative filter of a groundbreaking video game, we are giving legions of fans and music lovers all over the world a profound, new way to experience The Beatles," said Alex Rigopulos, CEO and Co-Founder, Harmonix. "This game will be a celebration of the Beatles undeniable legacy."

All you need is love. . .and extra peripherals.

When Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Metallica were announced I figured that in an era of DLC the only artists that truly could support their own game by themselves were the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles.  It sounds like they're not even using the Rock Band brand name here.  You figure it would be Rock Band: The Beatles but I guess they figure the strength of the Beatles' brand name is enough on it's own.

If it supports peripherals I already own I'll buy a disc-only copy in a heartbeat.

It would be nice if the entire Beatles discography was available for the game (even if it needed to be done over time with DLC) but apparently the licencing costs for the Beatles is pretty high.  45 is still a pretty good amount of songs though.  They'll no doubt be missing some song I would want but I was afraid it would be like only 20 songs or so.

Michael Jackson doesnt still own the rights to some (all?) of the Beatles songs does he? If thats the case then i will not be purchasing this game (even though they'll find a way to not put it on wii anyway*) so that my money doesn't come anywhere near his pockets, or anywhere close to that region of the body for that matter.

*Ok maybe they'll bring The Beatles game to wii, but it'll be so late that by the time wii gets it, they'll have already released a sequel Beatles game thats focused on Lennon and Ono and the breakup of the band, thus making it too late to even bother buying.

Hey MJ rocks

EasyCureNovember 07, 2008

I'm gonna avoid making the joke about whose socks he rocks off...

and just say even though i enjoy the mans music, i honestly don't want to support him with my money for anything he might ever have/will do allegedly and leave it at that. Please nots derail this thread with this or any Yoko Ono talk either lol

LuigiHannNovember 07, 2008

Jackson no longer owns any stake in the Beatles music. He sold the rights back while he was going bankrupt I believe.

EasyCureNovember 07, 2008

Good, thats what i thought but i wasn't sure. I believe when i first heard about it it was on speculation that he would do it because of going bankrupt, but hadn't yet.

Now if this game comes to wii and doesnt have exclusive intruments with exclusive features, then i might just condier  buying it!

45 songs seems paltry compared to other music games, but I'm sure at least 90% of them will be excellent.  Hopefully, we'll have the option to download more songs later... even if they cost more than normal.

This may sound crazy, but I'd like to see a two-player vocals mode that grades you for not only being on pitch but also for being in harmony.  Paul and John (and sometimes George too) have so many amazing vocal duets.  This would be the perfect game to overhaul the vocals engine that I complained about in my blog post.  The Beatles are very much a vocals-centric band, and most of their songs are quite challenging to sing at pitch.  They had unusually high male voices and sang full-throated, almost never falsetto.  I can sing along with them pretty well, but sometimes my throat gets tired after a few songs.

MarioNovember 10, 2008

I don't think their singing is abnormally high, compared to most singers. Also how can you be in harmony and not in pitch, hasn't two melodies ever been done in a music game before?

Some of the Karaoke Revolution games have a two-player mode, but I think they mainly trade off verses.  There's no special mechanism for scoring how well you are in harmony.  This would be perfect for the Rock Band formula, which already rewards everyone for playing together well.

It's THE BEATLES, so unless the developer somehow rapes the songs, it should be 100%...

I still don't know if it's enough to convince me to buy a crappy music game, though...

LuigiHannNovember 10, 2008

The karaoke revolution games that have two-player modes always have a small handful of songs labeled as "true duets," which for some songs was a simple male-lead and female-lead division, but for some more interesting songs, had you singing lead and backup parts, like in "Uptown Girl," "Dust in the Wind," and "Twist and Shout." But yeah, each player was scored based on their pitch, there was no kind of bonus for how your voice related to the other person's voice, I guess.

I do agree that this would be a good game to implement a second microphone, and/or a third guitar.

One other thing, that "45 songs" number was dismissed by Harmonix as speculation.
