Nintendo Unveils Captain Rainbow for Wii

The newly-revealed Wii game comes from the developers of Chibi Robo and will include obscure Nintendo characters such as Birdo and that old guy from Golf on the NES.

As E3 rapidly approaches, so do game announcements. While there has not been an official announcement, the Japanese Everybody's Nintendo Channel has unveiled Nintendo's newest intellectual property, Captain Rainbow.

Coming from Skip, the developers of Chibi Robo, Captain Rainbow appears to be the story of Nick, a run-of-the-mill geek who also happens to be a superhero and TV star. However, the colorful captain has fallen on hard times as his TV show is failing and he is falling out of the limelight. In an effort to revive his show, he journeys to Mimin Island where wishes are said to come true. Upon arrival, he finds out that he must make other characters' wishes come true in order to realize his own.

The other characters appear to be a plethora of obscure Nintendo personalities. So far the only three known characters are Birdo of Super Mario Bros. 2 fame, the old guy from Golf for NES, and Hikari from the Japan-only game Shin Onigashima.

The game appears to be a free-roaming action adventure game that shares a similar graphical style to Skip's other games, primarily the Japan-only title GiFTPiA. You will be able to switch between Nick and his vibrant alter-ego to beat enemies up and make people's wishes come true.

More information about Captain Rainbow is anticipated over the ensuing weeks as E3 is right around the corner.

Flipping awesome, I say. I wonder how the game looks and plays. Well, ought to find that out real soon.

As one of my friends said, it is the disturbing love-child of Captain Falcon and Tingle.

The part he missed is how awesome the game is going to be.

Is it just me or does Birdo look really weird in the trailer?
I think the art style is awesome otherwise, but all the stuff with Birdo just looks so weird.

That trailer sucked and the gameplay looked bland so far, But I love the idea!

I think I already know two unlockable hidden characters:

MAN BEAM

I was watching some footage of Too Human, and I swear the developer kept referring to some of the playable characters as "Man Cannons."

This phallic arms race can only end in sadness.

Someone will get hit, by something unpleasant.

Agreed

It sounds like the closest thing we'll get to a Captian N or Kingdom Heart game.

I should start preparing a massive attack on NOA for when they declare they won't localize it...

cheesegodJuly 11, 2008

If I remember correctly the SMB2 instructions said, "Birdo is a boy, but wishes he was a girl." I don't think I want to participate in making that dream come true.

EasyCureJuly 11, 2008

who wouldnt want to make birdo go from a girl wannabe to a woman ;)

KDR_11kJuly 11, 2008

Oh that'll be easy, if your hero has enough power in his punches...
