According to Red Fly, Mushroom Men is a throwback to Mario and Oddworld.

Mushroom Men has managed to raise quite a few eyebrows lately with its unique presentation and concept. Finnish site, NintendoFIN secured an interview with developers Red Fly who revealed some new information about the upcoming title.

Anyone who has seen screens of the game won't find the fact that Mushroom Men draws influence from both the Oddworld and Mario series odd at all. According to producer, Chad Barron, series visionaries Dan Borth and Kris Taylor had "the idea of having mushrooms be the focal point [of the game] as a homage to the Mario games" while they also "wanted to pay homage to Lorne Lanning and his Oddworld series."

The interview also revealed that the DS title, Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi would feature touch screen functionality that allows players to control "the Grapple Hook and to utilize the interactive screens (Inventory, Map, etc..)."

Red Fly also felt it necessary "to use as much of the functionality of the Wiimote as possible." The game will feature some motion control as well as infrared pointing, but no specific details were given other than the fact that the "device provides a lot of opportunity to do some interesting things in a real-time 3D action-platformer."

According to lead designer, Ryan Mattson, the soundtrack for both Mushroom Men games is shaping up well. Legendary bassist of Primus, Les Claypool has helped to create much of the soundtrack and they feel that "he was really able to grasp the aesthetic of the Mushroom Men world and illustrate that aesthetic in his tracks."

Red Fly also stressed that the title is meant for everyone to enjoy, with the recent ESRB rating of E for Everyone being "a big relief, since that is what [they] were going for." The team feels that the Wii is an excellent platform to develop for because it "reaches such a broad audience" and "let[s] the player really connect with the game."

Les Claypool is the fucking man!

Is this his first videogame soundtrack? If so, I may have to buy the game just on that fact alone.
