Wario makes his return to 2D platforming in Wario Land Shake for the Wii.

Wednesday, Nintendo announced a new iteration of the Wario Land franchise, Wario Land Shake for Wii. Nintendo's announcement was followed by a FAMITSU article containing details on the upcoming game.

Wario Land Shake sports sprite graphics, featuring "hand-drawn animations." The images released show Wario in a variety of colorful settings: a desert (with pyramids), the deck of a ship, underwater, and in what looks to be a cave. The game is said to feature twenty such worlds for Wario to explore.

The game's controls have been kept simple; it is played with the Wii Remote held sideways. The D-Pad is used for movement and the 1 and 2 buttons are used for actions. The title's "shake" designation comes from the series of moves that can be executed by shaking the Wii Remote. For example, shaking the Wii Remote can uncover secrets, allow Wario to shake down an enemy for coins, or execute a butt-stomp.

The Wii Remote's motion controls are also used for controlling vehicles found in the game. Vehicles shown so far are a rocket and a submarine.

Wario Land Shake has a Japanese release date of July 24, 2008. Although far along in development, there has been no word yet regarding the game's international release.

Talkback

I'm trying *not* to get excited about this game, because I will most likely be disappointed. The "level" descriptions and vehicles leave me thinking this will be closer in game design to Wario Land 4 than 2 or 3.... Though any Wario Land game should be welcome after Master of Disguise (bleh)

Yay for some 2D action. Now, I wonder if there will be lots of game to fit whatever price point they intend to sell it at.

There should be 1 game.

TYP, when I read this news I immediately thought of you.  I'm excited well enough.  I really wanted to find info on the developer (and if it was Nintendo what team was doing it), but I don't think that's come out yet.

I hope the farting of Wario is more useable than in Brawl.

I hope the farting of Wario isn't used as a gameplay mechanic at all in this one.

Is 4 more like 1?  I liked the first Wario Land better than the more puzzly sequel.

From what I've seen of 4 (tool-assisted speedruns) it's puzzly too but I also heard the health bar wasn't present in previous games.

Being an avid Wario user I can tell you that Wario's fart is very useful if done right and with proper timing.

At full charge Wario's fart and send players flying and breaks groups easily. It can also be a good third jump at full charge. It provides far better distance than Wario's own up-B attack.

True, its not a recommended attack as it CAN kill you if you are up in the air, but on the right hands his farts are not silent but definitely deadly.

As for wario Land Shake I am uber excited for this release. I grew up with the Wario Land games and that's where my love for the fat man came from. Its also great that despite Wario seeing success with Wario Ware Nintendo has not forgotten about his yellow suit and platforming roots.

I just hope its a much better product than Master of Disguise and Wario World were.

Nah, Wario Land 1 is good and all, but the series really is all about the puzzle-plaftormer, with immortal Wario and his zany transformations.

This sounds like a real wario game, outta nowhere too
