Yes, it's finally happened. However, we may need to wait a bit longer to play the game at all...Updated with official announcement

The Smash Bros. Dojo has updated with what is its most monumental update so far: Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog has been confirmed as a new character for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He becomes the second non-Nintendo character to be announced, joining Snake from Konami's Metal Gear Solid series.

Accompanying this update is a video showing off Sonic's high-speed moves. Attacks like the classic spin dash are seen, and they appear to fit into the Smash Bros. world perfectly. At the end of the trailer, we even catch a glimpse of the golden-clad Super Sonic!

Besides the Sonic announcement and Sonic intro video, the Smash Bros. Dojo has updated with another video trailer showing off a bunch of new gameplay with stages and characters in multiplayer and single player action, along with other things like trophies and stickers. It's the most revealing look at the game so far, so don't miss it!

While it's easy to be caught up in this major news event, not all of the updates at the Dojo tonight were good news. The release date on on the U.S. Dojo page is now listed as "TBD" instead of the previously stated date of December 3. Furthermore, Japan has finally gotten a solid release date for the game: January 24, 2008.

There's no telling whether or not these new dates could mean Brawl slipping past Christmas in North America. However, if you're planning on attending E For All in Los Angeles next week—we are, that's for sure—you can play Super Smash Bros. Brawl at Nintendo's booth.

The press release with quotes from Nintendo of Europe and Sega of Europe is below.

Super Smash Bros. Goes Super Sonic!

SEGA's gaming legend Sonic The Hedgehog to feature in Super Smash Bros Brawl for Wii

10th October, 2007- Nintendo of Europe and SEGA Europe Ltd today revealed that Sonic, SEGA’s legendary blue hedgehog, will be making his debut in the eagerly anticipated beat ‘em up, Super Smash Bros. Melee for Nintendo GameCube, it has since gone on to have millions of fans worldwide.

Laurent Fischer, European Managing Director for Marketing and PR commented:

“I am very pleased that Nintendo is extending its relationship with SEGA in this way and that our gaming icons can come together in such an action packed title. I am sure many fans will share my enthusiasm to see Sonic appear Super Smash Bros. Brawl to battle it out with a whole host of Nintendo favourites!"

Mike Hayes, President and COO of SEGA Europe commented:

"Its amazing that after all these years we get to see these two much loved characters compete against each other in another fantastic title. Bringing Mario and Sonic together again underlines the continuing partnerships between Nintendo and SEGA, and produces another industry first for our two companies."

In the forthcoming Super Smash Bros. Brawl, players will for the first time be able to complete in online multiplayer battles for up to four players. The game will also contain an all-new adventure mode called Super Smash Bros. Brawl: The Subspace Emissary, where players can select their favourite character before embarking on an adventure to conquer giant bosses from the Nintendo Universe. There will also be a variety of stages where players can commence battles, including Delfino Plaza, Yoshi’s Island and Sky World.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl will launch across Europe on Wii early 2008 at an estimated retail price of €60.

Too slow, NewsBot! TOO SLOW FOR SONIC. He'll cut'cha.

Bartman3010October 10, 2007

I'm upset about the delay, but this newsbit should definatley make up for it.

It did it for me. I got up early today just for this news.

raptorspikeOctober 10, 2007

Holy Crap!!! Screw Mario and Sonic at the Olympics! This is the fight we've been waiting for. Can we maybe get a sonic sidekick, like Tails or Knuckles?

I'm disappointed that we don't have Shadow the Hedgehog. After all, he's the cool one.

SheckyOctober 10, 2007

And he's voiced.... bwahahahaha!

TanookisuitOctober 10, 2007

Let's hope this delay isn't too serious. I'm feeling optomistic.

Jome20October 10, 2007

Sonic in Smash .... just AWESOME! He looked very fun to play, I can't wait to try him out. If the game is delayed, hopefully it's not more than a couple of weeks.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorOctober 10, 2007

Man. I hope this delay isn't true.

Nintendo's press site is still showing December 3rd. They could just be slow with the update though.

FoldMeTwiceOctober 10, 2007

" Sonic in Smash .... just AWESOME!"
you called for it .. behold: Awesome the hedgehog
btw. .. this is my first post here so, hi all :-)

Athrun ZalaOctober 10, 2007

awesome, Game of the Century CONFIRMED?

and they used Live and Learn in Sonic's video! heart.gif

Yeah, they even have the good sense to go back far enough in the 3D games to get a good song. Nice.

Pft, Tails is the classic sidekick, though I agree Knuckles would make for a good Brawl character, too. Let's hope they don't just shove a Sonic clone (Shadow) in there, per Sega's request.

Dirk TemporoOctober 10, 2007

Brawl NEEDS to launch before Christmas. If it doesn't, they are going to lose TONS of sales.

mantidorOctober 10, 2007

so what is the theory behind the delay? I doubt is sonic, he was in ages ago, and I really doubt they will add other character at this point.

I really doubt we will see the game before christmas now...

but sonic looks really cool, too bad they had to add the voice acting though :P

Heh, no it won't. Nintendo knows it can release the game whenever because it's going to sell forever. The only thing Nintendo would have to lose is the enormous hype and buzz that would surround the console for Christmas. With or without it, Wii is going to be selling out left and right.

DAaaMan64October 10, 2007

This is good news, and he fights ridiculously fast from what I can see in the video face-icon-small-smile.gif My type of character...

Now what do we gotta do to get mega man in one of these games?

BlackNMild2k1October 10, 2007

My money is on a March release in the U.S. if it gets delayed over here.
But maybe they only delayed it to have enough days left to reveal all the secrets one by one.

mantidorOctober 10, 2007

I bet on a worldwide release in jan 24. The game appears to be basically finished, this smells a lot like one of those evil marketing decisions when you delay it only to get more sales for other game (probably galaxy).

LandStalkerNigelOctober 10, 2007

OMFG WTF HELL YES! This is the character that i've been telling everyone is the most obvious character to show up in smash bros! (outside of nintendo) OMG I almost pissed my pants when i saw the video! face-icon-small-happy.gif Looks like I got my favorite character to use :]

All excitement aside, I felt Snake was kinda looks out of place in smash bros, but Sonic on the other hand looks like he blends in very well with his surroundings in the video. The date possibly being pushed back doesn't hurt too much, but a december release would have been really nice.

BloodworthDaniel Bloodworth, Staff AlumnusOctober 10, 2007

My bet's on January 24th. If anything they probably need more time to get the online up to snuff. I'm sure if marketing had anything to say about it, the game would be out by Thanksgiving with whatever issues it had left.

decoymanOctober 10, 2007

Sonic! Cool!

Maybe the delay is to... add/perfect voice chat w/headset??

hopes against hope!

Ian SaneOctober 10, 2007

"Holy Crap!!! Screw Mario and Sonic at the Olympics!"

Damn straight! How fitting that Sega's Mario/Sonic team up sounds lame and Nintendo's Mario/Sonic team up is exactly what the fans want. Shows you which company is currently number one and which company isn't making consoles anymore.

Every new bit of information for SSB Brawl has been awesome. They got Snake. They brought the guy from the other two games back. All controller options are supported. It's ONLINE. And now SONIC!!

Snake was more than I expected to begin with and while I wanted Sonic I did not expect Nintendo to approach yet another company for a crossover character. This game is just getting so much polish and obviously so much care is going into it. For the last few years I've accused Nintendo of releasing a lot of meaningless spin-offs and sequels for a quick buck. There were too many franchise games that didn't feel special. This one does. Melee was just a balls out "how do we make the be best SSB game we possibly can" sequel. It was the kind of sequel you wish all sequels were. The Super Metroid/A Link to the Past kind of mega sequel. Brawl is like Melee in that it seems like HAL just wants to crush the previous game and make it irrelevent. They're going for a mega sequel here.

Too bad it might be delayed since this was a given on my Christmas list. But I'll wait. This looks like the type of game that made me a Nintendo fan in the first place. It's worth waiting for.

Though now I want Mega Man and with both Sega and Konami on board this doesn't even seem like a unrealistic request. face-icon-small-smile.gif

Bill AurionOctober 10, 2007

Capcom has a bunch of "megatons" that they are to reveal soon (next week, I believe), so that would a pretty good time to reveal that, eh? face-icon-small-smile.gif

Somebody take that 100% positive post by Ian, frame it, and put it on a wall. We may never see one like it again. face-icon-small-wink.gif

CalibanOctober 10, 2007

Great, I can finally beat up Sonic to a pulp, I'm happy.

I seriously hope this game does not get delayed for us North-Americans, seriously.

ORLY?

It sure as hell seems like they're getting all of the 3rd party characters out there now so this would be the time for the remaining shoes to drop.

I'd be more surprised at the LACK of a Capcom character than the inclusion...

I'm betting second week of Feburary.

And i'm also thinking that there'll be a character from a Western developer. Lara Croft vs Samus? HMM?

I'd like to see Alex Roivas, from Eternal Darkness. Or even better yet, Karim. I'm not sure if Nintendo owns those characters or if Silicon Knights does. Little Mac would make a nice Assist Trophy.

As far as third party character go though, Pac-Man could be cool. Nintendo has already worked with Namco and included Pac-Man in the arcade Mario Kart as a racer, so it may not be too far fetched. At this point however, I think that Megaman sounds like a nice fit, stylistically. Unlike Snake. And don't get me wrong, I like Snake, but still don't quite think that he "fits" in as seamlessly as, say, Sonic.

Even having Nintendo reference Eternal Darkness again would make me cream. That games rules ahhhhh

Ew, no...The 3D Pac-Man is a travesty that transcends travesties... =\

"Ew, no...The 3D Pac-Man is a travesty that transcends travesties"

Agreed. Pac-Man is vastly overrated as an iconic videogame character. He hasn't been relevent since the crash. There are like only two REALLY awesome games in the whole franchise and one of them was an unauthorized sequel. Those two games are huge but the franchise isn't. SSB has a lot of nostalgia and 3D Pac-Man sure as hell doesn't give probably ANYONE nostalgic feelings.

Karl Castaneda #2October 10, 2007

Ew, please keep your Eternal Darkness out of my Smash Bros. kthxbye

Hey! That sequel became authorized before it hit the streets! So step off, Pac-Man is awesome when it isn't Namco who is in charge of his destiny. Look at Pac-Man versus, too. If Sakurai were to include Pac-Man, he'd make it work, even though none of us can see how...

Ian SaneOctober 10, 2007

"Hey! That sequel became authorized before it hit the streets! So step off, Pac-Man is awesome when it isn't Namco who is in charge of his destiny."

That's sort of my point. The original Pac-Man game is probably the only decent one Namco ever made. Thus the franchise and the character are overrated. Namco's Pac-Man is really a one hit wonder.

Pac-Man in SSB would probably play fine it's just the character really isn't that great to begin with. He's a force fed "legend" and I don't want characters like that is SSB. Sonic may not be so hot right now but he at least can point to a fair amount of classic games he's in. Pac-Man was finished before the Nintendo legacy that SSB celebrates even really began. His last hit arrived when Mario and Donkey Kong's first hit arrived.

GoldenPhoenixOctober 10, 2007

Wouldn't Pac-man play like a slightly modified Kirby or something?

Bill AurionOctober 10, 2007

I guess Pac-Man could replace the Punching Bag!

Now now, I wouldn't call Mario and Sonic lame just yet. The game looks to be a rock solid entry into the Wii library. There are a lot of games and options and it has gotten some really good impressions.

Brawl will definitely overshadow it but let's not forget about it either.

mantidorOctober 10, 2007

poor pac man, he's more entitled to be in this game than snake, thats for sure.

But I really don't see him working as a fighter, maybe an assist trophy, and the same for Ridley. I realize is an unpopular opinion but Ridley as a fighter is just boring, leave him as a boss in the single player.

I'd love to see the Rabbids in it actually face-icon-small-smile.gif

LuigiHannOctober 10, 2007

Rayman would work well as a playable character. The Rabbids could show up as part of his stage or his final smash.

I dunno, Brawl is as much about Sakurai's awesome Japanese connections as anything else. Does Nintendo have that good a relationship with Ubisoft, on either a personal or corporate level? I just don't see Rayman in Brawl, though it could be neat.

Michael8983October 10, 2007

Pacman could appear in his traditional iconic form. Something like Mr Game and Watch.
Most of his attacks would of course be of the "lunge and bite" variety but he could also be given the ability to roll and maybe soar for a short time with the super cape in Super Man Pac. Maybe he could also have the ability to shoot pellets/fruit out of his mouth.
Of course as a final smash he could turn blue and become invincible and knock characters off the stage just by knocking into them. He could actually make for a very interesting and completely unique fighter IMO. Plus he'd no doubt have a very interesting retro stage to call his own.

I'm quite sure there WILL be one more third-party character. My bet is it will either be Pacman, Megaman, or possibly even something from Square/Enix.

JanusOctober 10, 2007

I think i would prefer him in his classic form, screw Pacman on legs. Then again, i do like his look. Who knows maybe a cross between. Like he stands one second you press forward b suddenly his legs dissapear and he lunges at you. Then again, who knows maybe Pacman could be re-rebranded, or pull a shiek and have two forms! The yellow chain chomp and the boxer!

IceColdOctober 10, 2007

I don't think there'll be references (assist trophies, items, stages and the like) to 3rd party franchises unless they are represented by a character.

Quote

Ooooh. Hmmmm. That's a very, very interesting one. I would, like DaaMan, love any sort of reference to Eternal Darkness, it being in my Top 5 GameCube games and tied with Pikmin as best new IP last generation. And since it's a new franchise that arrived after SSBM, it would definitely add variety to Brawl.

Still, the dark nature of the game clashes horribly with Smash's atmosphere - Roivas would be even more out of place than Snake. Plus I think Nintendo wants to forget not only the game, but that whole Cube era. So I'm not holding my breath for an ED character. If we're lucky, we'll get an item triggering a sanity effect. That would be awesome.
