Nintendo accounts for over 70% of consoles sold in Japan last week.

Total Gamer Zone, reporting Japanese hardware sales figures for the week of July 23-29, shows Nintendo’s market domination in its home country is as strong as ever. The DS Lite leads the pack with a reported 150,494 units sold while the Wii follows in second place with 77,169 consoles sold. The DS Lite and Wii combined are responsible for just shy of 74% of all console sales for the week.

The PSP and PS3 finished third and fourth respectively with 35,068 and 28,829 units sold. That number represents a small surge for PS3 sales figures that Total Gamer Zone attributes to the release of Hot Shots Golf 5, a popular series with Japanese gamers. The PS2 claimed the fifth spot in the sales chart with 11,757 consoles sold, while the Xbox 360 continues to struggle in the Japanese market with only 3,872 units sold.

How long can Nintendo’s winning streak last? Will Nintendo’s market performance in the rest of the world be able to keep pace with the blistering benchmarks being set in Japan? Stay tuned, only time will tell.

Now that we all have a common source of information. The PS3 over doubled compared to sales the week before the reported weeks. Which is excellent for the PS3. On the flipside both the Wii (~-11%) and the DS(~-2.5%) have sold less than the week before. Meaning that Nintendo saw a minor decline in sales this week (~5%) while both Sony (~27%) and Microsoft (~45%) saw a growth. To add to that the top 50 in software was also fairly mix. With the inclusion of even a Gamcube game! (Gotha Force at 50.) I do not know what is coming out this week in Japan but I'm sure Nintendo will see a growth again and the PS3 will see a massive percentage decline back to normal.

I thought Newsbot knew that his brother Salesbot also frequents these boards posting all the latest Famitsu and Media Create numbers when possible. Someone should re-introduce the two so that they can become acquainted.

You know how brothers can be. I'm hoping the this olive branch will mend the bound between them that was torn asunder after the accident.

This is all some of my work but what was forgotten by Ceric is my data processing thread.
Fun with Numbers is where I take all the Media Create, NPD, and maybe someday the Famitsu numbers and create lots of colorful easy to read graphs and charts so everyone has a nice visual comparison of whats going on in the various markets.

People are still buying PS2s? More people are buying PS2s than XBox 360s?
That seems... odd.

Why? Same thing is happening in the US.

Well PS2 is still alive and kicking with new games still coming out, so I don't see how it is that surprising.

BlackNMild2k1August 04, 2007

Not to mention its a helluva lot cheaper and has a HUGE backlog of great games to play that are already in the bargain bins.

KlapauciusAugust 06, 2007

Its from the last generation, and I'd have thought everyone who wanted a PS2 would have one by now. Its not as if its been out a short time.
Does Sony count sales of 2nd hand PS2s in shops?
