Reggie Speaks at NOA Press Event

The big guy talks a lot of numbers, but a couple of news bits slip out along the way, including news of an online mode for Big Brain on Wii.

Though most coverage of Nintendo's media event held today is under embargo, the curtain has been lifted slightly. Thanks to a few outlets reporting news from Reggie's "keynote", Nintendo has allowed everybody to post information from the speech.

The downside is that Reggie didn't actually say much. Most of the speech is all about Nintendo's fantastic performance. Sure, they're growing the market and selling a boat-load of games, but what we really care about is what games they will be selling in the future. Reggie provided a little bit of information regarding these future releases.

First, he made a point to mention yet again that Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Smash Bros. Brawl, and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass are all releasing this year. Nintendo wants to make sure they aren't leaving the "core gamer" in the dust while they suck up money in their newly expanded market.

He also talked about a couple upcoming Wii games that will have WiiConnect24 features. We've already known about Pokémon: Battle Revolution and Super Mario Strikers Charged. In addition to these titles, we can now add Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree. NOA's president revealed that the game will have support for "up to eight players that can compete simultaneously and then compare scores with others that are thousands of miles away through the WiiConnect24 system." This statement confirms online leader-board support for the game.

What's this Nintendo delivering both online, and to the harder core?

I need to rub this is someone's face! But who's?

They really shouldn't keep promising this.. if/when a delay happens, the backlash would be even worse.

TrueNerdMay 22, 2007

Yeah, despite these numerous promises we've got, I still wouldn't be surprised if either Brawl or Galaxy gets delayed into Q1 08. I am however confident that we'll at least get Prime 3 and Phantom Hourglass, as both have already received year-long delays.

Note that this article has been corrected to remove the part about BBA having 8-player online mode. There is no evidence of such a feature, and in fact it's very unlikely given that the Japanese version came out not long ago without that mode. The 8-player mode probably involves passing around a remote, just like in Wario Ware.

BigJimMay 22, 2007

Ok, so when does the embargo get lifted?

trip1eXMay 22, 2007

Yeah it sounds like BBA only lets you compare scores.

Some say Friday, but I'm sure only those that have signed the NDA's really know.

Can the guy ever get the crucial facts straight before giving a speech

"..Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Smash Bros. Brawl, and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass are all releasing this fiscal year"

Fixt.

BlackNMild2k1May 22, 2007

thats what he meant, if you had put on your minnish cap you would have been able to read the small print face-icon-small-wink.gif

LouieturkeyMay 23, 2007

Yeah, but not everyone knows these things. Many people will take it as a delay if either Brawl or Galaxy are release between January and March of 08. In fact, many news outlets will spin it that way anyways.

Ian SaneMay 23, 2007

There's no way in hell both SSB and Mario are going to be released in the last quarter of 2007. I don't think that's necessary anyway (one should be enough) but they shouldn't be saying such things. You can bring up technicalities like "fiscal year" but that's just deceptive. They should know that when you say "this year" most people assume calender year because that's how most of us think.

And if Big Brain Academy is all remote passing like Jonny suggests then they shouldn't word it in such a way to suggest 8-player online because that ISN'T 8-player online. No one would think of it as such. Why say deceptive things when all it does is make people not trust you? Wouldn't it be better to just not say anything or be straight up? Big Brain Academy not having TRUE 8-player online play isn't going to piss anyone off on it's own. It's only when Nintendo makes us think it's possible when it really isn't does any backlash occur. So just say "Big Brain Academy has online features". That's positive and isn't deceptive. Being deceptive just makes it appear that the product is inferior and thus you have to "trick" everyone into thinking it's better than it is.

What embargo is there? Seems like news is coming out of the event.

that Baby guyMay 23, 2007

Not much news. From what I can tell, the embargo is until 8 AM EST, or something like that. Also, information about MP3 and SSB:B is supposed to be withheld until E3.

CalibanMay 23, 2007

1st party news is embargoed, 3rd party news is not, MP3/SMG/SSBB we wait until E3 however I think that the paper press will have a hands on these 3 games before E3 but they will surely be under embargo too.

GalfordMay 23, 2007

So does Brain Academy support online play or doesn't it?
Is this another Kepplan "no region encoding" incident?

The only thing I care about is MP3 and that's coming Aug 20.

I find it hard to believe that Ninty will hold back new media for Prime 3 until a MONTH before it releases... face-icon-small-frown.gif

Metroid Phlop 3.

Nintendo ensures it.
