Nintendo-branded game systems go 1-2 in sales. But which of them is on top?

The NPD Group released U.S. console sales data for the short month of February, and it should come as no surprise that the Nintendo DS is the top-selling piece of game hardware. According to the numbers, it sold through 485,000 units last month. Helping that total along was Diddy Kong Racing DS, making an impressive debuting at number three on the top ten software sales chart with 262,000 copies sold.

The other half of Nintendo's sweep was the Wii, which was the best selling home console for the month. Approximately 335,000 more systems found new owners in February. Wii Play might have helped sell some of those systems, because 371,000 packages of the game/controller combo were purchased, making it the number two February game behind the Xbox 360's Crackdown.

The Wii version of Twilight Princess (fourth, with 130,000 sold) and Wario Ware: Smooth Moves (9th, 109,000) were the other Nintendo games in the software top ten. In terms of other Nintendo hardware, the GBA is hanging tough at 136,000 units sold, and the GameCube wishes for better times, selling only 24,000 new systems in the month.

For comparison's sake, the Microsoft sold 228,000 Xbox 360 systems and Sony sold 127,000 PlayStation 3s in February. All is not doom and gloom for Sony, however; the PS2 is still flying off shelves, moving 295,000 units.

Update: Nintendo has issued their "we're number one" press release. You can read it below.

NINTENDO NEWS: WII WINS AGAIN

March 15, 2007 - According to independent sales data released by the NPD Group, the Wii™ from Nintendo was America's best-selling video game console in the U.S. again in February, with consumers snapping up virtually every system available in America totaling more than 335,000 units.

Only one game system sold more in February, the portable Nintendo DS™, with sell-through of 485,000 units.

Together, Nintendo systems represented 54 percent of all hardware sales in February, more than those of all other manufacturers combined.

"We're gratified that the explosive appeal of Wii, in terms of both new players and new ways to play, has created unprecedented demand, substantially beyond supply," says Reggie Fils-Aime, president, Nintendo of America. "But we also understand that there are hundreds of thousands of consumers still waiting to get their hands on the system so we continue to both ship more units to retail every week and work non-stop to build capacity."

Reports from households across the country indicate that Wii has become the centerpiece for weekend parties a new method for improving athletic technique and losing weight, and a landmark product for generating cross-generational fun.

The strength of Wii and Nintendo DS was also apparent in monthly software sales where three of the top four best-selling games for the month (Wii Play™ and The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess for Wii, and Diddy Kong® Racing DS for Nintendo DS) play exclusively on Nintendo systems. In addition, so far this year 10 of the top 20 best-selling games are exclusive for Nintendo hardware.

So Nintendo beat themselves...

And its amazing that even with shortages and lack of shipments the Wii is pulling some impressive numbers.

trip1eXMarch 15, 2007

Yeah Nintendo on top. Who would have thought this a couple years ago?

IceColdMarch 15, 2007

I think the absolute low was spring and summer of 2005. GameCube was dead after Jungle Beat and RE4. The DS had a lot of promising games coming out in the autumn and winter, but for those six months, it was pretty dry (Kirby Canvas Curse is still one of the best DS games though). Plus, we didn't get much new Wii info at E3 - nothing at all about the controller.

TGS '05 was the beginning. Nintendo's stock was at $14 then, I believe. Now it's at $35 and holding strong.

It's nice to see that taste is returning to the average gamer. Quite nice indeed. reggiehead.gif

This really shows the difference between the US and Japanese markets, as the Japanese are trend-minded and stopped buying the PS2 when the PS3 launched, but still aren't buying the PS3.

It's like a break in their logic which paid off for Nintendo: they won't buy the PS2 because it's old news, but they also won't buy the PS3 because it costs way too damn much and has no games.

I was hoping that 3rd-party games like SSX blur or Sonic would sell a lot of copies but I guess it's just because they came out late in the month.

Maybe showing that the Wii isn't having lack of shipments, they are just selling like crazy still!

I notice numbers for Zelda Wii are mentioned. Does anyone have figures for the GC version of TP?

Yes Nintendo had a great Hardware month in February. Though I think the more interesting thing is the Top 10 and how the 360 did.

According to NPD they moved within the top 10 837,000 units of software.

Thats better then the Wii with 610,000 units but not better then Nintendo on a whole with 872,000 units.

Also the 360 had 5 of the top ten.

If I was Microsoft I would be happy with this month. Very happy. I would like to see how much money was made by each. Truth be told lets say everyone makes the same off software and that the Wii makes as much profit as selling a peice of software. Then that would be 945,000 units so I'm sure that Nintendo made more raw money off the Wii this time, this is also assuming that the 360 hardware doesn't take a lost or make a profit (which I beleive I saw a story about it being to that point).

Thought I am curious about the rest of the list. What about the other games that sold?

Could it be that MS moved more software than Wii because it has 2 to 3 times as many systems available?

Never! It must be some evil plot to corrupt the youth of America. M$ is probably buying the games themselves in order to artificially boost their sales.

TrueNerdMarch 16, 2007

LOL @ PS3 for being unable to outsell the freaking GBA. The GBA! Ha ha ha ha!

Thats why I put the total number of games Nintendo moved as well. Which you'll notice is remarkably close when you consider there is what 5? 10? DSes for every 360 ever made. Editface-icon-small-frown.gifOk to be fair using the numbers from Wikipedia, December 31 2006, its 3.53... DSes for every 360 Shipped.)

I just think that even with those sort of numbers MS did well with 5 of the top ten for this market. That's more then all the other systems in February. Much like the DS has consistently been doing in Japan. I just think it shows that as an overall market we are a little more diverse oddily enough.

Anyway, I was just surprised Microsoft had such a good month.

Smash_BrotherMarch 16, 2007

They wouldn't even be in the top 5 if Nintendo could manufacture enough systems to meet demand.

After the Wii sales pass the 360 installed userbase, we'll probably see a situation closer to Japan's.

I still see plenty of people all over the internet who don't own Wiis and are lamenting the fact daily. Even the geeks can't find the blasted things they're still so rare.

CericMarch 16, 2007

Still doesn't mean that MS didn't have a good Month. Also the DS is dominating, still, the Japanese moreso then the Wii might ever. Which we didn't see here in February. It shows that the markets truly are more then a late reflection.

In fact if you went by February alone you think that the 360 was in the same position as the PS2 was and the DS was somewhat popular niche. Its sort of interesting. I expected a mostly DS dominated top.
