Wii Featured on South Park

Cartman goes to great lengths to survive the wait until Wii's launch.

Over the years, Comedy Central's South Park has included several video game references. Episodes have featured Dreamcast, PSP, World of Warcraft, Chinpokomon, and of course, the Okama GameSphere.

This week's new episode involves Cartman's obsession with the upcoming Wii launch. After a sleepless night of anticipation, he decides to freeze himself in the Rocky Mountains for three weeks until the console's release date. However, an avalanche covers his cryogenically frozen body so that Butters can't find it to dig him out. Things get pretty strange from there, as the ensuing events involve a war between atheist factions and highly evolved sea otters, set five hundred years in the future.

South Park episodes repeat several times throughout the week on Comedy Central, so check the network's website for the next showing. New episodes also frequently turn up on YouTube within a day or two of the original airing. This episode ends in a cliffhanger, so next week's episode (debuting Wednesday night) is also likely to mention Wii and its "motion control controller".

This was the first episode i've seen in the second half of this season (they split up seasons into two halves, the first half in the spring and the second half in the fall) and it was pretty weird. I could have done without the Ms. Garrison sex scenes, but it was pretty cool to see the Wii in its first mainstream appearence.

Being on South Park has been a kiss of death for game systems though. The Dreamcast is dead, the PSP is only doing so-so, the Xbox 360 is basically dead in Japan and struggling in Europe.

It looks like Nintendo gave Paramount a lot of money. Hehe.

I say give it 3 chances, that's the amount of times I let something happen before I count it as something that'll happen regularly. I gave Konami 3 chances to make a good 3-D ninja turtles game and they blew it.

If the Wii fails then we can say South park has a kiss of death.

So to you bad things come in threes.

The amount of purely positive Wii exposure in the episode is remarkable. However, knowing south park, I wouldn't be surprised if cartman finally gets his hands on it in the follow up and loathes it (or something of that sort).

I said the same thing in the thread on this very topic in the Wii section face-icon-small-wink.gif

I get the feeling Cartman will get so close it is painful and then be sent back to his own time.

I would be thrilled if he that happened... except when he gets sent back in time, they send him too far back and he ends up in line for the NES.

CericNovember 03, 2006

The NES had lines...

We don't need no stinkin' facts.

Now that sounds funny enough to hope that that is what happens.

No funnier would be to have him end up in line for that E.T. gamedevil.gif
