Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Nintendo just showed a video behind closed doors of the forth coming Smash Bros. game for Wii. New Character details inside.

You read correctly. Those dastardly devils at Nintendo saved a bit of knock-your-socks-off info for the first night of E3. To cut straight to the chase, the name of the title is Super Smash Bros. Brawl and new playable characters include Solid Snake, Wario, Meta Knight (of Kirby fame), Pit (of Kid Icarus fame) and Zero-Suit Samus (of Metroid: Zero Mission fame).

Update: There is some more info from this secret gathering. Wario will have a fart attack and Snake will naturally be using explosives and his trusty cardboard box. The game will be fully compatible with the GameCube controller. There will be online multiplayer for two players, but so far, syncing up four players is a technical challenge for that sort of game that they haven't fully worked out. It's also reportedly "possible" that other 3rd party characters could end up in the game before it's all said and done.

Finally, in contradiction to information from E3 last year, the game will be a 2007 title, not a launch title. And while we're on the subject, Super Mario Galaxy was also confirmed to be too early to launch with the system.

Update 2: We have more new information on SSBB. The Super Smash Bros logo is a new item in the game. When picked up, it gives the character a super attack. What's special about the item is that each character receives a different special attack. The Nintendogs also appear in the game, putting their paws up to the screen to distract the players.

Official SSB Brawl Announcement

Get NOA's take on the unveiling of the new Smash Bros. game, with Wario, Solid Snake, and other new characters confirmed.

Nintendo Names New Characters in Smash Bros. Game for Wii Console

A brawl at Nintendo's booth last night left dozens of gamers stunned --

and wanting more.

Nintendo unveiled a spectacular video of Super Smash Bros.(R) Brawl for

the company's upcoming Wii(TM) console. The amazing footage also revealed a

variety of new Nintendo characters who will be playable in the game, including

Meta Knight, the sword-wielding nemesis of Kirby(TM); Pit, the angelic archer

from Kid Icarus(R); Zero Suit Samus, the powerful Metroid(R) series heroine

minus her versatile armor; and Wario(TM), who demonstrated a noxious attack of

gastronomic proportions.

Nintendo also revealed that the game would include Snake, the gritty

soldier from Konami's hugely popular Metal Gear series.

Nintendo issued the surprise announcement during the Electronic

Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, which continues through May 12. Super

Smash Bros.(R) remains one of Nintendo's most popular franchises, both for its

fun, over-the-top battles and because it brings the most popular characters in

Nintendo's universe into one common setting. The latest incarnation, Super

Smash Bros.(R) Melee, is the best-selling game of all time for Nintendo

GameCube(TM).

ZachMay 10, 2006

WOW! Im kinda surprised to see solid snake on there. Im sure there will be a lot of people happy to see Pit. Im still a little disappointed that Olimar (of pikmin) isnt on the list, maybe he is an unlockable. I love the name, sounds cool, and gives the impression of the chaos that is SSB.

Hopefully this means that there isnt going to be a surprise delay, as has been rumored.
Edit: Spelling error

CalibanMay 10, 2006

"And the crowd goes wild!"

Woohoo! Cool! Hopefully we will see some of that footage soon.

GriffinMay 10, 2006

Oh snap. I was expecting Wario, but the rest threw me off... Solid Snake?? That's completely odd... I hope he looks rad.

Pit rules, too. Not sure about Meta Knight, but then again, I'm not much of a Kirby fan, and not aware of his popularity level.

WuTangTurtleMay 10, 2006

Awesome, but im curious to see what he looks like. I dunno i can't picture him in there fighting the likes of Mario and Pikachu.....Can't wait to see Solid Kirby!

joshnickersonMay 10, 2006

Hmmm... if Snake is on board... can a certain blue mammal be far behind?...

GriffinMay 10, 2006

MattVDBMay 10, 2006

Ummm. Dude? This is some of the coolest news yet. So glad you guys reported it. Thank you so much. Again, PGC with the exclusives!

BlasterMay 10, 2006

Woo man, I knew they were saving it for later in the show... can't wait. Solid Snake does seem a bit out of place to me though...

RizeDavid Trammell, Staff AlumnusMay 10, 2006

well, it's not entirely exclusive but we were definitely very quick thanks to a long series of phone calls face-icon-small-wink.gif

Shin GallonMay 10, 2006

Okay, this just made my desire for new Smash Bros. fly into the stratosphere...suddenly the new system's launch can't come soon enough.
Now all I'll need is a Wii Gameshark and a "take Wario out of the game" code and I'll be set...

Requiem of DarcnessMay 10, 2006

Now Nemo can finally shut up. Thank God.

GROUND FLOOR

I would lay good odds on Sonic as allegedly the deal was almost sealed on him being in SSBM.

Also, I remember playing as Snake in DMTV, he was top tier faustsmiley.gif

Non-Nintendo characters in Smash Bros. = face-icon-small-disgusted.gif But it certainly won't make me give it up, and I'm glad they showed a bit of the game. And SINCE they're in there anyway, I want Mega Man!

Edit: Saw the shots, awesome. Game looks quite a bit better than the original (graphically), but...Samus looks kind of weird without her suit. It's like she's wearing a wig or something. I assume that's Samus anyway.

Good work on keeping the show exciting after the press conference!

GriffinMay 10, 2006

Wow... those screenshots are incredible. And Zero-Suit Samus turns me on, strangely.

MattVDBMay 10, 2006

Just saw the pics. Feeling way more stoked now. Way more stoked. This and Prime 3 at launch made my whole E3.

RizeDavid Trammell, Staff AlumnusMay 10, 2006

MattVDB?

I wasn't aware that this or Prime 3 was going to make the launch sadly. In fact, this very story says it will be 2007 face-icon-small-frown.gif

Most info is suggesting Prime 3 won't be ready for launch either unfortunately. The press sheets say "TBA" release date for now.

Michael8983May 10, 2006

I think it's safe to assume this is basically Nintendo's "Capcom vs SNK". Only instead it's going to be "Nintendo vs every developer we can reach a deal with to include their mascots". Though I'm glad they came up with a better title. I think Snake was chosen to be THE non-Nintendo character in the demo for two reasons. Firstly to one-up Sony and secondly, to make fans drool at the prospect of who else will be included. Afterall, Konami is NOT a very Nintendo friendly developer and Snake does NOT fit in with Nintendo's usual colorful mascots.
If he's in, it's very VERY possible we could see Sonic, Pacman, Mario, Cloud, etc...

Between this and the return of Duck Hunt with (non-Orange) "zapper", I think Nintendo has gone insane and I LOVE IT!

Ian SaneMay 10, 2006

"The game will be fully compatible with the GameCube controller."

YES! No compromising the controls!

The graphics look f*cking sweet too! Not surprising considering that SSBM looked better than most Cube games. Why Nintendo didn't use that Mario model for all their other Mario games I'll never know.

This also looks better than a Cube game!

AnyoneEBMay 10, 2006

Same controls as GCN? (major minor tweaks) Good, those controls were just about perfect.

If the delay means they have time to get 4-player online working, it's worth it.

Michael8983May 10, 2006

How could Nintendo not show this at the press conference?
I get that maybe it doesn't utilize the Wii-mote very well which was what the conference was all about, but this SO would have blown people's minds. All those concerns about all Wii game's have sub-par graphics would have been obliterated. The game is beatiful.

MattVDBMay 10, 2006

IGN had an interview with some people at Retro, who said it was coming out on launch. That's where I got my info.

http://revolution.ign.com/articles/707/707486p1.html

Smash_BrotherMay 10, 2006

I have no pants which are uncreamed...

This sounds like Nintendo reaching out to 3rd parties in a big way, and frankly, I love the idea.

Here's to hoping they don't compromise the multiplayer in favor of single player...

SSBB might be out in 2007, but Prime 3 is launch title as was said by IGN and it will be proven in an interview they have done and will be up when they put it up.

now, hem, being more serious, non-Nintendo mascots?
sounds odd, but extremely exciting nevetheless ^^
maybe we'll get the answer to the old "mario vs Sonic" thing face-icon-small-tongue.gif

also, is it me or the character go SSJ now?
plus, it seems that the specials' powers have been upped "a little" >_>.....

I can't wait ^_____________^

Hey Caliban, you were beaten with the info and a link to the story was provided. Corruption sounds really cool.

DavideoMay 10, 2006

That previous gamespot article JUST posted a link to the video.....

it's hillarious and sweet and amazing... now I can't wait for the high-res copy.

PS- I'm sad that Mario is not a launch title.... I really think that is going to hurt them.

TJ SpykeMay 10, 2006

I don't think people should get their hopes up for seeing Olimar. It would be too out-there size wise since Olimar is the size of a quarter, so even Pikachu would be a giant compared to him.

Solid Snake? Of all the game characters I expected to maybe be in this he wasn't one of them. Sonic should be a lock now.

I just hope they can take care of the technical problems and get online multiplayer at least up to 4 players.

It would be great if this game just kept adding characters as companies got on board with the 24hour connection. I just hope they dont pull some copy of microsoft and sony's online store where you have to pay for content. For some reason I have a feeling you will be able to buy extra characters that way, plz nintendo prove me wrong.

Who says Olimar has to be to scale? He'd make an awesome addition, anyway.

Michael8983May 10, 2006

This has been the most amazing E3 for Nintendo ever.
With the announcement of Smash Bros Brawn, just about EVERYTHING I was hoping for was announced alomg with some things I NEVER would have expected but am thrilled about.
The only thing I was wanting/expecting but didn't get was Nights but I suspect it's in development but too early to show. But the announcement of a Wii version of Resident Evil makes up for as I can't think of a game more perfectly suited for the Wii-mote. In fact I was playing RE4 just a few weeks back and thinking how incredible it would be with the new controller. I don't even care that we didn't get to SEE it. Just knowing it's coming is enough for me.

*Hopes girlfriend doesn't read this

One last thought: GC controls will be fine, thank god I've got about 6 or 7 in the house. But I do wonder why they don't use the newly announced 'classic' controller. Three sets of controls may be a bit much for non-GC owners.

Maybe because Solid Snake and the entire Metal gear Solid series are awesome, and Captain N was a crappy show with a dorky main character? I dunno...

I'm hoping Sonic is in this one...and Tails, for that matter.

Seriously, Captain N may have been dorky, but he totally deserves to be in a Smash Bros. game. Way more than Snake.

MattVDBMay 10, 2006

If you say so, I couldn't be happier about this. I love Metal Gear Solid (only real reason I'm going to get a PS3) and Snake is one of my all-time favorite video game characters.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorMay 10, 2006

Honestly, I have no problem with Snake (aside from the casual "That's not a Nintendo character" thing, but I'm not even really upset about that).

But I want Captain N. That'd be neat.

Really though Snake should only be the start of the floodgates. You can just have one sole 3rd party character. Need 20 more now. Sonic, Lara Croft, Sam Fisher, Mega Man, Jill Valentine, Crash, Spyro etc. all need to be in there now.

Yes indeedy...this should be like the videogame equivalent of 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'

denjet78May 10, 2006

This is really... umm... interesting.

Could this be the beginning of a thaw between Konami and Nintendo? I'm not a fan of the series myself but an exclusive Metal Gear Wii would take a lot of wind out of Sony's sails, even if it's just a spin-off. A new Castlevania would be great too. Think of controlling Simon's whip with the Wii remote.

Of course we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves but I think this announcement shows some signs of doors that used to be closed finally openning again.

KhushrenadaMay 10, 2006

Man, I was at IGN and I see this little icon that says Smash Bros. I click it on it and takes me to a pic of Mario and Snake and I think to myself, this can't be it but to my surprise it is. I wonder if this has to do with the fact that the first Metal Gear Solid appeared on the NES. But if its true Hideo Kojima himself practically "begged" to include Snake in the last Smash Bros. game, I wonder if Nintendo made some type of deal to do this that involves more support from Kojima.

Now Wario was pretty much a lock considering he has plenty of unique moves and adventures of his own. He definitely deserved to be included.

Pit, I also expected because he's been mentioned about so much lately. Nintendo Power mentioned him as someone they'd like to see in the next game and recently ran a flashback on the game Kid Icarus. But, I expected him to be a real hidden character like Mr. Game and Watch and really surprise us.

Meta-Knight is another charcter I've been hoping for. Frankly, the Kirby universe is full of great characters and should be represented by more. I just hope they also add King Dedede as well. I'd love to battle with him.

Zero-suit Samus is the one I find most surprising. I felt if they did another Samus it would be Dark Samus or the SA-X Samus. Zero-suit just had a weak ray hun and ran around a lot. Still, she is one of the finest looking Nintendo characters. I'll choose her over Candy Kong any day.

Quick list of other characters I want to see in the game:

King K. Rool - (He's got plenty of moves)
Dixie Kong - (People always list Diddy but Dixie has more unique moves)
Ridley - (forget size issues, I want to swoop down on Samus and rumble in Norfair)
Captain Olimar - (I like him and think he could be interesting)
King Dedede - (I mentioned him already and I want to mention him again)
Star Wolf - (Give Falco his own set of moves and make Wolf a clone if necessary. I don't like clones but I really think they should include more villians)

Quick list of others that would be nice - Toad, Daisy, Diddy Kong, another F-zero character, Pokemon to replace Pichu (Squirtle), another zelda character (Ganon), Starman, Mario RPG character (Smithy or Geno), Banjo-Kazooie (seems more likely now), Marx and Wart.

NephilimMay 10, 2006

"Same controls as GCN? (major minor tweaks) Good, those controls were just about perfect."

But they have different move sets
Mario does a down spike while standing, this is impossable in melee without jumping
but stangely he has the normal down smash (break dancing kick spin), but it seemed weaker as when he did it to link, he only got knocked back a bit
So its very strange

It is pretty awesome that they finally decided to put Wario in the game, and my favorite Kirby character of all time, Meta Knight. I have a feeling that just like the Smash Bros. games before it, Brawl will be one of the best games for the system. Please let it at least come out in early 2007.

Hostile CreationMay 11, 2006

Nintendog isn't a character, it's an item. WATCH THE TRAILER NOW.

I just hope they don't use too many 3rd party characters. Sonic and Snake and Megaman are all cool, but if they start throwing in stuff like Leon and Jill (from the same series, and basically wouldn't do anything differently from each other, and probably Snake, too) I'll be pissed. Keep it to a diversity of moves, and 3rd party characters to a . . . reasonable percentage.
And continue to handle it gracefully. I love the way Snake was introduced, it just made me feel good.

RizeDavid Trammell, Staff AlumnusMay 11, 2006

Any 3rd party character that figured prominently on the NES to me would be a great adddition. Mega Man, for example, would be perfect. While Konami's dealing, I'd love to see a Belmont from Castlevania and perhaps Ryu from Ninja Gaiden. The Bionic Commando would be sweet. There's really tons of possibilities. I don't mind having third party characters at the table at all. As long as Nintendo characters remain at over 50% it's perfectly logical.

Ian SaneMay 11, 2006

Does anyone else find it weird how this game wasn't even shown at the press conference and yet there's a trailer and screenshots while for Super Mario Galaxy all we have is footage from the conference, one screenshot, and some shots of demo units taken on the show floor? Why is so much being released for a title that's probably a fair ways off while the other games that are going to be released sooner have virtually no official screenshots whatsoever?

NdolgerMay 11, 2006

GREATEST NEWS EVER!

After reading the smash brso. dojo! site this also makes me very happy:

"The main theme was created for us by none other than famed Final Fantasy composer, Nobuo Uematsu!
Additionally, opera singer Ken Nishikiori has also participated in this project on vocals.
...And as a special service to readers of this site, I can say that the game's music will be performed by a full orchestra. It will be a deluxe chorus complete with lyrics in Latin."

I CAN'T WAIT!

Kinda sad that HAL isn't working on it, but "The Studio" seems capable enough it seems. Soooo glad Sakurai is directing it. Can't wait to own everybody online; this series has been my life for the last six years. face-icon-small-happy.gif

Because why release official anything while the thing is playable? Screenshots will most likely come out when E3 is over with.

Ian, Nintendo knows this is a huge one. If all we had were those lame phone cam pics of this game for months, I swear, the internet would implode. I can't give an excellent reason as to why no footage or shots of games from the floor have been shown (besides the ones on Nintendo's own site, or off-screen footage), but it probably goes back to the whole "playing = believing," which is a bit different than oogling screenshots.

odifiendMay 12, 2006

You know, I actually didn't think Nintendo's strategy of not releasing any screenshots was good at first. News reports were basically saying the same thing they said several months ago: you can use the wii controller to control a gun or an airplane, etc. I thought the lack of concrete details about the Wii would hurt its press.

Then articles like this came along, and now I understand their strategy. They're building massive hype without really letting most people compare Wii graphics to the other consoles directly.

Mop it upJune 07, 2009

Looks like Nintendo will soon be discontinuing the daily Smash Service, they've sent out a Wii notification message that the submission period will end on June 30th. I imagine this means they will continue to send out the submissions for a little while longer but it's hard to say how much longer it will last. I'm kind of surprised this is being ended this early because the game is still selling...

This makes me wonder how much longer the Mario Kart Wii tournaments will last.

StratosJune 07, 2009

I've never D/L'd the Daily Smash Service.

I think MKWii will last longer because that one is near the top 10 of the monthly sellers.

BlackNMild2k1June 07, 2009

They were stopping the service because they have far too many submission, & are using too many Treehouse employees to sort through them all (you know penis & other inappropriate stages). If they ever run out of ser submitted stages to highlight they can always open up the service again, but they have better things to do with employee resources than sift though millions more stage entries, when thet already have more than they need.
