This new version of Tetris includes six modes based on Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and other Nintendo series, as well as touch screen controls and Wi-Fi multiplayer.

Update: PGC has confirmed with Nintendo that Tetris DS is an internally developed title, though we don't have details of which internal studio is responsible for the game.

Touch-Controlled, Wi-Fi-Ready Tetris DS Falls into Place on March 20

The long blue bar. The yellow block. And those darn zigzag things whose

images stay on your brain. These familiar Tetris shapes started a generation

of video game fans. Now Nintendo is putting a new spin on the classic with

Tetris(R) DS, available March 20 exclusively for Nintendo DS(TM), which

incorporates the use of Nintendo(R) Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo's wireless

gaming service.

Hard-core and casual gamers alike became obsessed with the original.

Tetris DS builds on that emotional attachment by combining the original game

with new types of game play that could only be possible on Nintendo DS.

Each of the six modes of play features a theme based on a classic

Nintendo game, such as Super Mario Bros.(R), The Legend of Zelda(R) or

Metroid(R). The traditional Tetriminos (falling blocks) and line-clearing

strategy remain the staples of the game, but the touch screen adds a new

element of interactivity.

Some modes give players special Tetris puzzles to solve. Others feature

head-to-head action between two players, or massive wireless battles between

10 DS users, even if only one player has a game card. Players also can log

onto Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to compete in two- or four-player battles.

Tetris DS even includes a point-based rating system based on players' battle

results. Opponents can see one another's ratings, which indicate their skill

levels.

Every gamer, whether competitive or casual, will find a way to reconnect

with one of the most popular puzzle games in history.

Queue all the people bitching about Nintendo milking their franchises...

I think its awesome, and it could mean a whole new sector of DS owners... The same group that bought the brick gameboys to play only tetris.

MarioJanuary 10, 2006

Whoa... new killer app out of nowhere.

PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusJanuary 10, 2006

I like it. This excites me.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorJanuary 10, 2006

Damn you Nintendo... I need to stop buying games!

I still need to finish Kirby(DS), Mario Kart (DS), Metroid Prime Pinball (DS), Polarium (DS), Geist (GCN), Metroid Prime 2 (GCN), Pokémon XD (GCN), Mario Tennis (GBA), Wario Ware Twisted (GBA) and DK:King of Swing (GBA).... And I can't stop playing Animal Crossing Wild World long enough to play *ANY* of these games!

Then there's Odama and Twilight Princess coming out... and now this? Damnit.

Handheld Tetris
Franchise Nostalgia
Online Multiplayer

Insanely good decision by Nintendo, as long as one of the six modes is normal Tetris.

optimisticlimboJanuary 10, 2006

I agree with UncleBob, too many great games coming out and I as well can't stop playing Wild World long enough to play other games. But still, I EAGERLY await Tetris with it's online goodness.

WindyManSteven Rodriguez, Staff AlumnusJanuary 10, 2006

The only thing touch screen control will be good for in this game is to quick-select the person you want to attack in multiplayer games. If it' required to be used for anything else, I'm going to hate Nintendo for it.

But hey, with the stuff they're already promising, this one can't miss.

StrellJanuary 10, 2006

Wayne the Brain> YES, YES, OH GOD YES

Ian SaneJanuary 10, 2006

It's about time Nintendo got to work on Tetris again. They're really the best at it and there's going to be a million Tetris games anyway so they might as well get someone who knows what they're doing working on them.

I hope though that "normal" Tetris is included and can be played without the touchscreen. I'm pretty annoyed when the unique DS features are blatantly shoehorned into a game that doesn't need them.

Nosferat2January 10, 2006

Killer app?? umm doubt it.

Sounds good anyway, i just hope %ucking nintendo keeps Metroid out the game. I care less if the whore out mario or link, but please save Samus from the milking, raping and whoring of Nintendo.

KDR_11kJanuary 10, 2006

Queue all the people bitching about Nintendo milking their franchises...

Tetris isn't Nintendo's franchise, they have to license it like everyone else.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorJanuary 10, 2006

I realize that, I was pointing to the fact that mario, zelda, metroid, etc. were being put into it.

Baseball isn't Nintendo's franchise either. Neither is soccer, or tennis. face-icon-small-wink.gif

ArbokJanuary 10, 2006

Tetris, tons of modes, Wi-fi = Instant purchase.

I really can't wait for this title.

Hostile CreationJanuary 10, 2006

"Sounds good anyway, i just hope %ucking nintendo keeps Metroid out the game. I care less if the whore out mario or link, but please save Samus from the milking, raping and whoring of Nintendo."

Give up all hope, whiner. The release specifically says that a Metroid mode is in it.

couchmonkeyJanuary 10, 2006

To me, this isn't such a bad example of franchise milking since Nintendo is using characters from all of it's franchises to spruce up a straightforward puzzle title.

The Mario sports and Mario Party games are a more appropriate example of franchise milking because they slap Mario in the game title, and throw in the Mario cast where a brand-new cast could have been just as good. Then they put out new games in the line every single year.

If they called it Mario Tetris and replaced the blocks with pictures of Mario characters, then I'd be complaining.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorJanuary 10, 2006

Haha, they haven't released a title yet.

Gotta love the convenient re-definition of franchise milking.

I can't wait for the Rev version of Super Smash Tetris!

Ian SaneJanuary 10, 2006

"To me, this isn't such a bad example of franchise milking since Nintendo is using characters from all of it's franchises to spruce up a straightforward puzzle title."

I somewhat agree in that this doesn't feel as much like milking though I think it's because it's a crossover. People like Tetris and people like the Nintendo franchises so combining them creates somewhat of a "dream" scenario. I didn't have any problem with DDR Mario either. It seemed like a good fit. There was no DDR game on the Cube so we finally got one and at the same time there's a dream scenario of combining the two franchises. Super Mario RPG again is the same situation. Nintendo and Square working together made it a dream game.

Without the dream situation however spinoffs seem forced and uninteresting. So the "milking" feeling is justified. I think the big difference is whether or not people really are asking for it. No one really cares if Nintendo makes any Mario sports games or Mario Party games. They might buy it but when people think of games they wish would get made Mario Party 25 or Mario High Diving doesn't make the list.

Think of it like a comic book special. A Spider-Man mini-series or spin-off isn't that interesting because there's already a regular series. But a Spider-man vs. Superman crossover is interesting.

Well then why are Mario Sports titles bad? They seem like a good crossover to me. You can't pick and choose which ones are and aren't milking a franchise based on which games you like personally. Because you like the idea of Mario DDR or Mario RPG Nintendo will continue to make the Mario Party games. People have different tastes.

Im glad, Metroid needs more exposure, nothing annoys me more than the question "Samus who?"

JensenJanuary 10, 2006

You could put the other player's games on the bottom screen, and use the touch screen for special attacks. You could get a power-up that lets you remove blocks from opponents by touching them. Or maybe a power-up that puts a shadow over an area of the screen. Maybe it will let you rotate another players display by spinning it on the touch screen.

Ian SaneJanuary 10, 2006

"Well then why are Mario Sports titles bad? They seem like a good crossover to me."

It's not a crossover. There's nothing exceptional about their existence. In my previous examples there was Nintendo + Tetris, Mario + DDR, and Nintendo + Square. A Mario sports game isn't exceptional at all. Nintendo can bang one out at anytime.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorJanuary 10, 2006

Firstly, are these real screens?

2.jpg1.jpg

Secondly,
In your 3 examples Ian, the second two require cooperation from another company, so I guess I can see how they are "different" from sports games, but Nintendo and Tetris doesn't.

Also, there are many people in this world who think there is something exceptional about the existance of a sport.

Bill AurionJanuary 10, 2006

They are on Ninty's press site, so yes, they are very real...The game looks and sounds fantastic, but I now hate Nintendo for making me buy so many awesome games... >=|

You think so? Or are you just thinking for everyone else? Why is the combination of Mario & friends and a board game, Baseball, Tennis, or Soccer not a "dream" situation? Please do tell me, if you're Nintendo and going to do a baseball game without Major League teams and players and without using a Nintendo franchise because you personally don't want to "Milk" them. Who are you going to use for the game teams and characters?

steveyJanuary 10, 2006

O_O It's an omen metroid dread is coming! And the mario sports games are great the only thing nintendo is milking is the not so good mario party(poor mario party cowtpg.gif )

Honestly, if they objectivly, not subjectivly, are not so good, why do they continue to sell well? Are people just idiots and buying the game for no particular reason?

ArtimusJanuary 10, 2006

Awesome graphics!!

Ian SaneJanuary 10, 2006

"In your 3 examples Ian, the second two require cooperation from another company, so I guess I can see how they are 'different' from sports games, but Nintendo and Tetris doesn't."

Tetris isn't owned by Nintendo so there is still cooperation between different companies for both franchises to co-exist.

Hey if Nintendo and Tetris are friends again does that mean the old Nintendo published Tetris games will be available in the Rev download service?

kirby_killer_dededeJanuary 10, 2006

Mario Party truly is a great game. The best party game ever created. The only problem is that every year for the past seven years, (not to mention the GBA one...wasn't there a GBA one?) we've more or less seen the same game with a slightly different title. It's things like Mario Party that the Revolution threatens to change, which is a good thing.

EDIT: And I agree with Mantidor. The only reason many people know about Samus at all is Super Smash Bros.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorJanuary 10, 2006

Now I could be wrong on this, but I was under the assumption that no one owned Tetris because no one can prove they were the creators. Is it not true that any company can make and release a tetris game?

As far as I know, the person who created tetris is a well known fact. Some russian dude, of course, but due to soviet rule at the time (or was it just the communist rule in general) he was not allowed to have ownership of the game or something.

edit: I looked it up in Wikipeida, Alexy Pajitnov is his name. It also lists all of the copyright contravsery too.

couchmonkeyJanuary 10, 2006

Alexei Pajintnov (not sure about the spelling) is responsible for the original Tetris design. I don't really know how much ownership he has over it, but I had the impression that THQ was somehow "in control" - otherwise why hasn't there been a Tetris game from any other company until now?

We have had 5 Mario Party games and at least 6 Mario sports games on Nintendo's various consoles this generation. I don't care anymore. Nintendo-themed Tetris is something relatively new.

StrellJanuary 10, 2006

There have been 7 Mario Party games on home consoles, 1 on the GBA, and 1 that was a set of playing cards and used a game board and the e-Reader (I have it because I found it very cheap and thought "what the hell").

ArtimusJanuary 10, 2006

The whole Mario thing is nonsense. This is a NINTENDO themed Tetris, not Mario Tetris. It's called Tetris DS for a reason. Using cool retro stuff to spice up Tetris is GREAT.

KnowsNothingJanuary 10, 2006

Looks fun face-icon-small-smile.gif

ShyGuyJanuary 10, 2006

What's the deal with the photo realistic background in the second screen? Am I missing something?

darknight06January 10, 2006

HELLS YEAH, Online Multiplayer TETRIS. That's all they need to say, I'm already sold!! Can't wait for March 20 for this to go along with Metroid Prime Hunters!!

DjunknownJanuary 10, 2006

Tetris online? Not even Lumines or Meteos can compete with that!

Is this part of Nintendo's non-gamer strategy? I know for the hardcore like the PGC'ers they'll be in a pickle since they may not be able to afford Hunters and Tetris DS on the same day... But for the non-gamers, its almost a no-brainer.
Is 3/20/06 a magic day or something? What else will Nintendo release that day?

WFC is looking good. But can the 3rd parties step up to the plate and provide great, free, online-enabled goodness?

Looks like the first background shots of New Super Mario Bros...

~*Adolph*~January 10, 2006

i'm totally confused how this game will play out. will it be tetris and you watch a video
of mario on the top or what?

Touch tetris doesn't seem to complex.

Do spin move on block to spin in the direction.
Drag the block to where you want.

So top screen shows other players intresting. IS that 12?
1-12 online? Or only 1-4?
Tetris is simple so 12 shouldn't be hard to do.

I'm so confused in how this plays however. Is that a cursor, hold and NEXT as settings ! AWESOME.

I hope it has all the modes of NEW TETRIS for n64 that had tons of great modes.
Tetrisphere is great but I doubt it will be with this since the developer who made that is no longer alive I think. (H20) 2 months away seems great for me. Looks like Tetris DX is going to be sold now since this will replace it.

Cross's fingers that it has the original TETRIS Song, and mario, zelda songs too.

By the way on the issue of MILKING NAMEBRANDS lets just stop all this stupid fighting.

Companies will use whatever product they know will sell. If they know something has a proven track record of sales than more likely they will use that something.
You can say EA milks madden games, they are basically the same game just with a few more options
but not really $50 upgrade. Capcom milks Resident Evil, and Microsoft will milk HALO, Namco with Pac Man etc.
Companies want to make money and making new franchises is risky so they rather milk known games into different situations hoping sales will continue for that. Look at pysconauts reviewers love it but it sold poor. If the same game were called FInal Fantasy Adventures and took out the original characters and put Final Fantasy characters it would of sold better because of the final fantasy namebrand.

Look for Nintendo the gamecube didn't do so well in sports games. It was losing big names and overall the big names didn't sell. So a mario game would in theory sell better than a new Baseball sim. LOOK at Pennet Chase where did that go?

Soul Calibur 2 proved non-exclusive games can sell good with Nintendo characters.
So they did it again with NBA Street 3, SSX on tour, Fight Night 2. Did it help sales?
who knows but would the game sold less if they didn't do it?

"milking" is part of the world as we know it. No need to fight over it, just accept it as fact PERIOD.

Infernal MonkeyJanuary 10, 2006

I came!

on PGC to post about how I approve of this game!

It might be a bit like Puzzle Fighter, in that how well you do in-game relates to like uh, how far Mario makes it on the top screen or something.

Good Lord, the Nintendo DS library is crushing everything right now. Only the DS could have Metroid Hunters and Tetris DS, two must-own titles, releasing on the same day.

This game is going to rule. The screenshots look nice and old-school...just the way this grizzled gaming veteran likes 'em.

BlkPaladinJanuary 10, 2006

You know Nintendo is already having problems with the number of units they are selling. Now in less then two months they will have two big name titles coming out on the same day. I remember when the parents bought the gameboy for their children and ended up being the ones that played it because of the bundled Tetris. This may bring some of those players back.

vuduJanuary 11, 2006

Anyone else noticed there seems to be both HOLD and ITEM boxes in the screenshots? I know Tetris DX had a hold function, (not sure about any of the THQ releases) but I believe items are a first for Tetris.

I wonder what the Ghost does. Steal an opponent's block? Makes the current falling block disappear?

Also, did anyone else notice that the background (in the block area) on the bottom screen of the second screen shot is a screenshot from when you rescue the princess in the final castle of the original Super Mario Bros? That's kind of ... odd.

KDR_11kJanuary 11, 2006

Items were in Tetrinet AFAIK. 10 player online multiplayer, now THAT is new.

I hope it has a ToD mode... And perhaps, for good measure, Bastet.

King of TwitchJanuary 11, 2006

Does Mario/Luigi get sucked into the ground when someone loses in multiplayer like the old one?

KnoxxvilleJanuary 11, 2006

W00t!

WuTangTurtleJanuary 12, 2006

lol, i just played tetris in an arcade recently, and then on my phone a couple days ago........i can't wait for this one though 10 player matches seems crazy! Heres hoping the online portion is a snap. I mean come on what am i gonna do spell out a bad word using tetris blocks? I'm sure someone will master the ability to make a P3nis out of tetris blocks but come on.....
