Did You Know?

Nintendo Announces Four Major Games for May

E3 won't be the only major video game event in May. Nintendo has four highly anticipated games launching in May featuring a powerhouse franchise, hot new rhythms, out-of-body experiences and sacred stones.

May 1: Pokemon(R) Emerald for Game Boy(R) Advance SP offers a new, more challenging Battle Frontier where players will face a fierce new lineup of competitors that is certain to test the skills of even the best Pokemon Trainers. The game features compatibility with five previous Pokemon titles, and up to four players can battle wirelessly.

May 9: Donkey Konga(TM) 2 follows last year's Nintendo GameCube(TM) smash hit with a new selection of modern, bongo-bashing songs. Donkey Konga 2 has dozens more songs in every genre to help you find your groove.

May 23: Geist(TM) for Nintendo GameCube will help you scare people senseless. Wander as a ghost and possess people, animals and objects in your path to help you unravel the mystery of your condition and get back to your human form.

May 23: Fire Emblem(TM): The Sacred Stones for Game Boy Advance SP lets you take advantage of your strengths and exploit your enemy's weaknesses. The role-playing game features new character classes and epic battles.

Talkback

Ugh, there's way too much good stuff to buy...Geist is definitely first-priority for me, with Fire Emblem second, I guess...

(Can't wait to see how much Geist has improved)

Ian SaneFebruary 24, 2005

Well Geist's release date just came out of nowhere. I'm hoping Nintendo releases some more info about it soon since it has been a while since we last had a major update on it. I guess it could be at E3 thought at that point they could showing off the finished game.

Has there been a song list released for Donkey Konga 2 yet?

And once again Nintendo is doing the simultaneous release date thing with the GC and GBA. Fire Emblem is a long game and Geist doesn't look like it would be super short either. Anyone who is interested in both games is probably going have problems fitting in time for both. I really wish Nintendo would space out titles like that better. Sure technically they're for seperate systems but there is a lot of crossover in the userbases.

Personally I won't be getting any of these any time soon, even if Geist gets amazing reviews, because I'm still working through my backlog and still haven't even bought Minish Cap yet.

Hostile CreationFebruary 24, 2005

Well, Ian, Fire Emblem and Geist aren't really aimed at the same audience at all. If someone wants both games, that's entirely coincidental, and they're on two different platforms. It'd be nice to space them out, but this isn't ridiculous.
I'm sort of hoping Geist is bad so I don't have to buy it face-icon-small-tongue.gif I'll probably be picking up Fire Emblem, though.

Jonathan says:Even now, I'm skeptical about Geist. It hasn't been shown since last E3, not a single screenshot, and it needed a lot of work back then. If it is coming out this soon and Nintendo plans to hype it up at all, they need to get started quickly and show us some amazing stuff.
Nintendo? Hype? Are we thinking about the same company?

Ian - I've been told Nintendo likes to do that to save on shipping costs. It makes sense, actually. With the rising development and publishing costs, and the small margins (with GBA games, especially) if you can save a few bucks by shipping as many items together as possible, I say go for it.

couchmonkeyFebruary 24, 2005

Sheesh Ian, you aren't even buying either of them because Nintendo and third parties already supplied you with more games than you could finish.

I'm hoping Geist will turn out to be great. I'm sad there aren't any DS announcements here.

So if it hasn't been seen it's garbage right? I am thinking quite the opposite...If the game is being put out so soon and we haven't gotten any media on it I believe the change has been all for the better...

Ian SaneFebruary 24, 2005

"So if it hasn't been seen it's garbage right?"

Actually yeah. It's pretty common for really crappy games to be kept out of the hands of reviewers. Universally bad reviews can hurt a game's sales so sometimes when the publisher knows they've just got a total turd they don't give out review copies or allow the media to get any hands on. Usually that's only for stuff like bad licenced GBA games but generally game publishers only don't provide info when that info could be damaging to sales.

Still I'm not assuming Geist is a total dud or anything but if this was like some "Halo killer" or whatever we would probably have been given more info. It's like how Killer 7 is very likely ass because Capcom is so blatantly hiding important details of the gameplay from us. It doesn't help that the developer of Geist is known for making Olsen twin games and thus has never even released an average game let alone a good or great one.

I like being kept in the dark regarding major plot points and stuff but I like details on how the game plays and impressions from others.

Bill AurionFebruary 24, 2005

But we already KNOW what the gameplay is like (from the past 2 E3s) and hence do not need further analysis, thus nulling your Killer7 example...

RobotorFebruary 24, 2005

Awesome, Donkey Konga 2 is finally coming. I've been patiently awaiting this game ever since the first ones to few songs got boring. Hopefully this one has better, and more challenging songs. Has a song list been released yet? I'm hoping for more latin tunes, Para las Rumberos was awesome.

GamefreakFebruary 24, 2005

bleh geist is gonna suck

DjunknownFebruary 24, 2005

Killer 7 seems to be a mixture of 3rd person and 1st person perspectives. You move in 3rd person, but shoot in 1st. Add to the fact that this one of the most bizarre titles announced (Next to Odama, but we have a semi-firm grasp of what it is.), its hard to shoe-horn.

Either that, or it sucks face-icon-small-wink.gif

Anyway, on topic, I remember seeing a movie trailer for Geist in Nintendo's newest demo kiosk. I think there was a demo there, but I was busy sampling DK's Jungle beat and Star Fox. Can any one confirm a playable demo?

Another Fire Emblem eh? I wonder if it will have *GASP* connectivity to its eventually released console counterpart? Oh wait, Nintendo gave up that concept...

K-RPGFebruary 24, 2005

Geist's only significant issue (as of last E3, anyways) was a really twitchy aiming system. Hopefully, these last seven or eight months have been enough for N-Space to fix it.

I can't agree more. The Nintendo DS really needs some customer reassurance. I don't mean to sound like just about everybody out there, but the PSP has a very strong launch with many games to follow. 3 months after it's launch, the Nintendo DS is still struggling to provide it's userbase with games and innovation. That's a big problem. Whether the PSP and DS will actually compete with each other years from now doesn't matter because to the market, it seems like they will be in direct competition. If one system looks much more appealing in every aspect to the mainstream market, it won't matter if one is priced 100 dollars over. The thing that worries me even more is that as we get closer to PSP's launch, hardly anything newsworthy is happening to the DS. I don't understand the logic at all. What good will a pricedrop and multiple colors do if hardly any games are available.

Anyway, on the subject of Geist, I am looking forward to it. I believe that there are new screenshots of it in Game Informer.

Hostile CreationFebruary 24, 2005

When has Nintendo ever been known to whore out their games before the release date? If the game sucks it'll get bad reviews and you don't need to buy it. I don't understand why you're complaining, Ian.

Ian SaneFebruary 24, 2005

"If the game sucks it'll get bad reviews and you don't need to buy it. I don't understand why you're complaining, Ian."

I'm not complaining. I just think they should release some more information. It's pretty hard to sell a game for example that the general public has little to no knowledge of.

MarioFebruary 24, 2005

It's also hard to sell a game that isn't out yet!

WuTangTurtleFebruary 24, 2005

at least they could do is add more screenshots or something, i won't hold my breath to see if the game is any good. However if i do happen to hear good reviews i'll most likely check it out.

Fire Emblem is a shoe in for my moneys worth.

And as for the DS........pathetic............I love my DS but by the time PSP releases here stateside i believe PSP will already have a bigger game library from the get go. And that is sad. However the PSP is sporting a 50% sports lineup so that won't interest me at all.

I remember hearing Nintendo was supposed to have some big news or release of some kind to counteract PSP in March but i dunno IMO I just want more games and i don't think Nintendo is gonna crap out 20 releases out of nowhere this coming March.

I swear I was in a local gamestop shortly after RE4 came out and I saw a very impressive trailer for Giest on the demo unit. I had seen so little on the game that I had no clue what I was watching for the first minute or so, but a worker at the store stopped in his tracks and watched it as well. I looked online for it and couldn't find the trailer, so I don't know if it was newer footage or not... but the game looked like it was coming together quite well. The 4 player action looked particularly cool, with is a huge selling point for me. As soon as the words "Giest" flashed on the screen, the worker went and picked up their display pre-order box and started reading up on it (and I went on the net trying to dig up more info about it), so the title definately has potential.

If Nintendo does a good marketing job on this it could be a big hit for them, but they need to get the hype machine running soon so this game doesn't become another Eternal Darkness sales wise.
