Japanese Nintendo DS Pre-Sales are Strong

The Japanese love to "Touch!" their games.

According to today's Nikkei BP Consulting reports, the Nintendo DS is already the third best selling system in Japan, and that's based on pre-orders alone.

The console, which isn't out until December 2nd in Japan, was beaten out only by the Game Boy Advance SP and PlayStation 2 (respectively) in total number of hardware units sold (or pre-sold) this week. Below the DS in fourth and fifth place are pre-orders for the new slim design of the PS2 and the Nintendo GameCube.

This report bodes well for Nintendo, and can probably be attributed to the nation wide tour the company is taking its new product on right now.

I'm sure pre-sales in the US are newsworthy too.

DS is getting horrible advertisement. Wasn't this supposed to be the most money Nintendo has ever spent on advertising. Pre orders aren't doing very well here in the US. NOA...tisk tisk...

I hope that was sarcasm.. but if it isn't, then what are you basing this from? One store? I've heard it's doing great and is getting lots of pre-orders in the US, and just wait until playable demo units are set up (which should be soon), expect a huge boom in pre-orders after that.

At GameStop, there will be demo units in store in early November. You have to remember though, that there's only going to be about 1 million units available this year in the U.S., so Nintendo does not need to advertise at all (or hardly). I'm sure the news will have stories all during the holidays about this "hot product" that is impossible to find. Nintendo is smart--advertising will come early next year after production has ramped up. If you want to be smart--reserve now! Trust me.

I think I've only seen one advertisment here in Canada, it was in some flyer :\ I better start seeing commercials and previews in movie theaters ^_^

Edit: OOH, they should of advertised it in some new sports games LMAO!

There are plenty of pre-orders being sold in the US just from people who know of it. One of my fellow staff members online (won't say where though face-icon-small-wink.gif) has looked up data fro mthe different stores for the company he works at. There are reserves upwards of 100 units at some single locations. There is enough buzz going around right that they don't need to advertise much.

Besides, here in the US, we have less patience for a product than JPN does. So if you start advertising tooo soon, people can lose interest. It you time it just right, which seems to be what they are doing, it will have the most impact.

There's giant pictures of the DS in every magazine I get, mostly as a part of of an article, I suppose. I get the idea Nintendo doesn't need to spend much as long as they can keep mags all stir-crazy about it.
