Smash Tour Brings Mario Party To Smash Bros.

The Wii U version has Smash Tour instead of Smash Run. Check out our thoughts as well as some direct-feed video.

When I first heard about Smash Tour in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, I was a little apprehensive. A Mario Party-like mode in Smash Bros.? Would it be as slow-paced as Mario Party? Would mini-games just be replaced by fights? Is there a stock market component like Fortune Street? I didn't know what to expect, but I had a bad feeling it might just be a slow-paced board game in a game that is focused on frantic insanity.

While Smash Tour does owe some of its style to Mario Party and similar board game video games, it sets itself apart with its quick pace. Instead of everyone taking their turn in a row, you all move at once, requiring you to think on your feet to try to collect items and power-ups on the board before your opponents do. Like Smash Run, you collect stat-boosting power-ups to improve your fighters in addition to trophies that give you in-game boosts.

Turns can fly by in less than a minute, and the only time you go away from the board are when two (or more) players land on the same square. When that happens, all players go into a competition, whether it's a regular Free-For-All fight or a round of Target Blast. The winner gets a bonus and the losers get kicked around the board.

You move your Mii around the board and accrue other characters to fight for you. It appears to be random what characters you receive and when you can use them. When you reach the end of the round, which can vary anywhere between 15 and 25 turns across three different-sized boards, you then use all of your fighters in a final battle similar to Smash Run.

I'm very encouraged by what I played of Smash Run. The speed of the mode suits Smash Bros. extremely well, and while I still need to spend way more time with it to see if it will be something I play with my friends regularly, I'm curious to see what kind of insanity can come out of this smartly designed board game addition to Super Smash Bros.
