Do you really like the first three Ace Attorney games? Well, I have good news for you...

Earlier this year Capcom announced they would be releasing the first three Ace Attorney games in a single collection. Containing the three Game Boy Advance titles (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Ace Attorney: Justice for All, and Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations) the titles would be the same games but with new, upgraded, art assets.

We got the opportunity to test out the North American version of the collection in Capcom's booth and can say that it is exactly as described. The core gameplay, controls, text, and music appear unchanged from the example stage - "The Stolen Turnabout" from Trials and Tribulations. With that in mind you can get a good feel for if the game would be enjoyable for you by reading our reviews of each of the games (1, 2, 3).

What has changed are the visuals that accompany the three titles. The demo took place during the trial and it was nice to see that not only were all the sprites recreated with the higher resolution of the 3DS in mind, the aspect ratio was also adjusted to account for the wider screen. All of the art looks very sharp, and is a clear step above the DS version of the game, especially the character art, which looks fantastic. Additionally, the 3D works very well. The sprite layers are split up allowing for a proper sensation of depth. The judge's desk was clearly closer than the Judge, who clearly was sitting some distance from the wall behind him. While this is not the full 3D models we saw in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, it still manages to look very sharp while keeping true to the spirit of the original titles.

It was slightly disappointing to hear that Capcom has not touched the GBA music, although I understand that the music is considered by some to be "iconic," so doing so may alienate some of the people most interested in this collection.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy will be available at the end of the year.

Will they be including the extra missions that were charged DLC on the WiiWare versions?

KhushrenadaJune 11, 2014

Extra missions on WiiWare? What? I didn't know such things existed. Here I was just coming to say I hoped they fixed the spelling errors that appeared in the games. That always bugged me. It's a text-based game. You don't have a lot of debugging to do and yet every game had like 2 errors in it. I never understood that.

The DLC he mentioned was only the final case of the first game. The Wiiware versions of the original trilogy were ports of the GBA originals from Japan, and the last case was added to the DS remake to make use of the DS's capabilities

I've never played any of this series, largely because it doesn't seem like my kind of game, but this is tempting.

I played all three games last year on the iOS version of the game, Ace Attorney HD; the screen shots here look similar to that version.  The extra mission from the DS version was present in that version, so I would think that this version would also feature it.

It's been covered extensively on the Connectivity and RFN podcasts, but if you've never played these games (especially the first and third) are a great bit of gaming history and are well worth the time investment.  I wanted to try them out before Dual Destinies came out last year, and I'm glad I did.

Ok. Then I've got it on my DS version. Good. That was one of my favorite cases.

Take away this man's mod powers immediately!!!

Yeah, I know my larger sizing of text didn't work but, no, I'm not going to go back and edit the post. Deal with it.

StratosJune 11, 2014

No, young man! You need to get back in here this instant and edit that thread!
