Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

Curt played Wayforward's upcoming 3DS game. Read his thoughts!

WayForward had a few games on PAX's expo hall, but only one was a part of Nintendo's booth: Shantae and the Pirate's Curse on 3DS. This upcoming eShop title is the third entry in the Shantae series, the previous two being on Game Boy Color and DSiWare respectively. How does the scantily clad dancing genie make the transition to stereoscopic 3D? Quite well, actually!

The game involves our heroine Shantae having to team up with her archrival Risky Boots for the first time. Because of this, Shantae forgoes her trademark transformation abilities, and gains new pirate themed abilities such as a pistol. The pistol not only comes in handy as a projectile weapon, but to solve puzzles in the stage such as reaching targets that Shantae's prehensile ponytail can't reach.

The demo only had two stages, one of which was a dungeon, and the other a boss fight. Despite not having a map, the dungeon was fairly simple to navigate, thanks in part due to each room having a proper hint as to where to go next. The boss fight involved whipping bombs back at an enemy tanker that's shooting them at you, and using your trusty hair whip to beat the driver into submission.

The controls and feel of the game are definitely felt faster paced and more satisfying than the previous DSiWare entry. You also have a larger field of vision, so being able to see what's coming up ahead, above and below you is no longer an issue. As I said before, the demo did not have a map available, but James Montagna, the director of the game who was on-site at the booth, assured me that there will be one in the final game, and will be improved upon from Risky's Revenge.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is due out before the end of the year.
