New Super Mario Bros. 2

The first set of DLC is available for NSMB2, complete with tons of gold and Super Meat Boy level of challenge.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 hit the Nintendo 3DS to a lot of mixed opinions. While many journalists found the gameplay and level design to be compelling and fun, the visual aesthetic and sound design felt uninspired.

Despite all of this, one of the high points of the game was the Coin Rush Mode, a mode which challenged players to complete a random set of three levels gathering as many coins as they could in a harshly limited amount of time. With the recently released downloadable content, Nintendo is focusing on what makes Mario games so fun – gameplay, and a golden shower... of coins.

Before you can hop on and download the new Coin Rush packs, you’ll first have to receive a SpotPass message from Nintendo informing you that the packs are available. From there, it’s as simple as going into Coin Rush mode and hitting the newly added shop button at the bottom of the screen. From there, you can choose to buy all of the packs in a set for 600 yen (on the Japanese store), or individually for 200 yen each. Each pack contains three brand new levels, a total of nine new levels. It’s a very quick and painless process, as the download is only 4 blocks. Shortly thereafter, you're ready to go!

The first pack is called Gold Mario de Go Go Pack (Gold Rush Pack in North America). When it comes to difficulty, this is definitely the easiest of all of the currently available DLC, with Nintendo giving it one out of five stars in that regard.

The levels are pretty simple, but manage to give you tons of opportunities to collect coins, golden mushrooms, and even give you a chance to play as Mega Mario for short period of time, destroying blocks and using your huge mass to collect tons more coins. It’s pretty easy, but enjoyable if you’re wanting to farm some coins. On my first try, I think I managed to get at least 15,000 coins without pressing on too hard.

The second pack, titled Kiroku ni Challenge A Pack (Coin Challenge Pack A) is rated as three out of five stars in terms of difficulty. While this does provide a bit more of a challenge than the Golden Mario pack, if you are a veteran of the series, it probably won’t take you more than a few tries to complete all three levels. The level design is familiar, and yet still different from what you saw in the retail game. The levels also provide a decent amount of secrets to find, including hidden tunnels, vines, and more. One other unique feature of this pack is that the New Super Mario Bros. 2 website tracks scores from gamers worldwide to see where they stand.

You will die

Hardcore Mario fans are definitely going to want to take a look at the third pack. Titled Ippatsu Shōbu de Doki Doki Pack (Nerve-Wrack Pack) and given five out of five stars on difficulty, this pack gives Mario gamers perhaps the most challenging stages that they have ever played.

If you’re not playing with the Super Leaf (which, believe it or not, can still be challenging for different reasons), this gets to Super Meat Boy levels of cruelty, with deaths piling up faster than you would ever believe. This pack is the perfect exemplification of what Coin Rush mode should be – heart pounding chaos where one small mistake will send you back to the beginning of the level and start to build more and more rage in your gaming soul.

The first level of the pack first has you hit a P-switch that turns a trail of gold coins into blocks which you have to run across before the time runs out, or you fall to your impending doom. Along the way, rows of blue coins serve to distract you as you scramble to find another P-switch before the level disappears from beneath you. The second stage is just as cruel, but a little bit slower paced, requiring you to bounce off Koopa Troopas all the way to the end. The last stage is a cannon boost stage much like the hidden level warps in the main game, which sees Mario continually bouncing off bullet bills as he struggles to avoid falling to his doom. It’s ridiculous, fun and everything that it needs to be.

The first DLC for New Super Mario Bros. 2 offers a little bit for everyone, with levels covering all abilities and interests. You can farm coins, take on a moderate challenge, or undergo a sadistic test of raw skill.

This is just the start of the download content in New Super Mario Bros. 2, with more on the way. Keep your eyes peeled later this month and in November to see what else Nintendo has in store.

Nerve-Wrack Pack it is. I'm intrigued.

You had me at "Super Meat Boy level of challenge."

I'm down. Having this digitally has made me play it more that I thought I would post-game completion. Three interesting level packs for under $10? I'm game.

I totally want this come thursday, however its just more sad that the 2nd pack lets you compare online scores, but why the hell can't I compare 3ds friends via spotpass?

I street passed somebody the other week and they had mario but not turned on street pass :-(

I really hope the levels in the 3rd pack play as normal levels. In other words, I'm not all that into Coin Rush mode, so I hope they can be approached as normal mario levels, allowing the player to disregard coin collecting entirely if they wish. The rest of the game was pretty good about that sort of thing.

@Pixelated While coins are typically laid out in the level where you get them without trying, you don't really have to pay too much attention to them. Even if you don't focus on the coins, the levels in the third pack are pretty challenging.
