The cross over fighting game you've been waiting f..Wait, what? Puzzles?

As was mentioned in James' impressions, the TGS demo of Layton Kyouju vs. Gyakuten Saiban is split into a Layton side, and a Wright side. I played the Wright side.

If it weren't for a few art decisions, it'd be indistuingishable from the main Phoenix Wright games. Stuff like the text windows have a parchment color, instead of the translucent visual novel look of the Phoenix Wright games. The evidence screen was ornate and old-timey, instead of the usual modern look. Pretty swanky, actually!

The supporting characters that I ran into, including the first witness, were of a pretty typical anime-styled design. Certainly nothing like the far-out shapes and sizes of the support characters of the Layton games, and probably even pretty conservative for the Ace Attorney games. It's no doubt an inevitabilty when you have to make everyone fit in the same world.

The first witness, Albert Wesker…No, not really!

Aside from how a few things looked, it is exactly Ace Attorney, down to the text scroll speed, and I could swear the text and menu sound effects were the same. If you've played Ace Attorney before, this side of the game will be instantly familiar: defense on the left, prosecutor on the right, witness in the middle, judge opposite, and trusty sidekick right next to you. And of course, you can examine the evidence at any time with the 'R' button to search for contradictions between evidence and testimony. One new feature, though; you can spend hint coins to get hints during testimony. There's one Layton/Wright gameplay mix and I hope there's more.

The game seemed to be about halfway voice-acted, just like the Layton games. So, basically, the cool and/or important lines and scenes get the voice treatment. The FMV anime cutscenes were in full 3D, but there was a little bit of noticeable video artifacting. It just seems to stick out more in 3D, I guess.

The final release is only two months away, so it's a safe bet to say this segment is pretty indicative of (a small part of) the final product. It feels nice and polished, and Ace Attorney fans will feel right at home – on the Wright side, anyway!
