This time around the hunters are battling each other, and with cards. What's it like? Read on to find out.

Sega is displaying the newest game in the Phantasy Star Online series at E3 this year. Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution is the evolution of “PSO Card Battle," which was showcased at E3 2002. The game places the light hunters against the dark hunters in a battle for supremacy.

Card battles are played out in hands. A player begins by drawing a hand of 5 cards. After the draw phase, comes the set phase. In the set phase, the player can put down weapon cards (if they are light) or creature cards (if they are dark) to aid them in their fight. After settings, the game then moves into the act phase. The act phase is where players assign their attacks for the round. Light hunters may attack by themselves or with the aid of a weapon, but they cannot do both. Dark hunters can attack both by themselves and with the aid of their creatures. This may seem unbalanced, but there are rules in the game which even things out.

In order to physically attack a light hunter, the attacking hunter or creature must first break through the light hunter’s weapon. This adds an extra layer of defense to the light hunter. On the flip side, dark hunters have nothing to break through so they can be attacked instantly, but light hunters do not have the aid of creatures to deal multiple rounds of damage to their opponent. At the end of a turn, players draw back up to 5 cards to replenish any attack cards used in the act phase. On defense, either player can use cards to decrease or avoid damage dealt to them.

Graphically, the game looks crummy. The entire display is very muddy and fails to impress. This is obviously attributed to the fact that the title is only 30% complete. The graphics should improve quite a bit by release.
