Mr. Driller Drill Land

I never expected it, but Mr. Driller Drill Land is actually one of my favorite titles on the TGS floor. The basic premise of the game is drilling colored blocks until you reach a certain depth, avoiding avalanches from the blocks above.

I never expected it, but Mr. Driller Drill Land is actually one of my favorite titles on the TGS floor. The basic premise of the game is drilling in colored blocks until you reach a certain depth, avoiding avalanches from the blocks above. When same-colored blocks are stacked together, they all break away when you drill one of them.

I was surprised that the GC version featured basically the same gameplay because I thought it would not convince people to buy the GC version over the GBA version. The game has very nice artwork and backgrounds that are reminiscent of the Power Puff Girls cartoon.

When you start the game, you are presented with Drill Land, a theme park. Initially, there are five attractions: Star Driller, Drindy Adventure, Horror Night House, Hole of Druaga, and World Drill Tour. The version on the show floor only had Star Driller and Drindy Adventure playable. In each stage, your character artwork reflects the theme. For example, in Drindy Land, Mr. Driller wears a hat like that of Indiana Jones.

While the gameplay is identical to its GBA counterpart, the GC version features additional variations in each level. For example, in Star Driller, the setting is in space. As a result, you have an air meter which decreases as time progresses. So while drilling downwards, you must also look for air capsules to fill up your air tank. Items are also varied throughout the themes. In the Star Driller stage, you have items such as a black hole that sucks up a portion of your screen, and a comet that flies across the screen, destroying any blocks in its path.

Mr. Driller Drill Land is pretty fun and relaxing. I have not yet tried the game long enough to see if it becomes repetitive, but it is definitely worth a look if you are into puzzle games. So far it seems to be very import friendly, as there is not a lot of text. In addition, the game also has a multiplayer mode, which was not playable, but that should also add additional replay value to the game.
