Kururin Paradise

Come see what a Kururin veteran thinks of the sequel so far.

When I first got a chance to browse Nintendo’s press materials at E3, I was very surprised to see that a sequel to one of my favorite GBA games was headed to North America. Even though I didn’t have a lot of spare time, I wanted to be sure I gave it a few moments since I knew it would probably be overlooked by everyone else.

I didn’t spend a whole lot of time in the main game, but it seemed to be very similar to the original - guiding your helicopter through mazes, changing directions with springs, and avoiding other nasty obstacles like spiked balls. Chances are that any new tricks or twists are being left for more advanced stages.

One thing I did pick up on right away is that more attention has been paid toward the graphics this time around. It’s cleaner, more colorful and has a specifically hand-drawn look.

Multiplayer wasn’t set up at E3, but there were three new mini-games that I had a lot of fun with. The first game actually places Kururin (the little bird pilot) out of his helicopter, flapping around and avoiding obstacles. If you played the Golbat mini-game in Pokemon Stadium 2, you’ll have a good feel for the control.

The second mini-game is called “Cannon! Cannon! Cannon!" you’re back in your trusty Heririn helicopter and have to avoid cannon balls for a full minute without getting hit three times. It didn’t seem all that hard to me, but maybe the final version will have more difficult modes of this.

The last one is actually pretty clever. It’s called “Mowrin," and you use the Heririn to mow a huge yard. You can extend and retract your blades and your goal is to mow as much grass as possible without hitting rocks or other obstacles. It’s a fun idea and I hope that more mini-games like this are added before the game’s final release.
