Stage Debut

by Daniel Bloodworth - May 24, 2002, 1:19 pm EDT

The mystery game is revealed! Find out what it's like to put the Game Eye into action.

The first game to utilize the new Game Eye device, Stage Debut is actually the current version of the 64DD game Talent Maker. The game (if it can be called that) is basically a customization studio to create your own characters, using your own face. After mapping your face, you customize every aspect of your character: clothes; body parts; hair; color; and accessories. You select specific types of body parts and from there you can stretch or shrink them either vertically or horizontally. Clothing varies from business suits to bikinis to a number of outlandish outfits. Once you have everything picked, you can audition or go out on the stage and dance.

Graphically, it doesn’t look like the game has been adjusted from the N64 version yet, but it appears that they are just starting to work on it so that could definitely change. In particular, the face kind of flattens out around the head, which kept me from recognizing myself at first. Once I adjusted though, I couldn’t help but laughing at seeing my face on a guy with a suit jacket, boxer shorts, pigtails and a sword and shield.

At one time, Nintendo had talked about using the 64DD version to build characters to use in other games, but the representative didn’t mention whether or not that feature was still in the game. In its current state, Stage Debut really doesn’t look like it can stand on its own. Seeing your face on wacky characters is fun for a while, but there isn’t much to do with them. However, if Nintendo does connect this to other games, it could be a lot of fun.
