Sonic Advance

Sonic on GBA!? The impossible has come true! Here’s the rundown so far.

Before I start, I have to say that I am fairly new to Sonic, especially in 2-D form. During the 16-bit days, I was a complete fanboy and wouldn’t have been able to convince my mom to buy a Genesis even if I wanted one. So my experience with Sonic was limited to a few store demos. That said, this game seems to match much of the style of the original games from what I remember, and has been a great experience to this point.

You can choose between Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy, and each one has a slightly different feel. Amy seems a little tougher to use since she doesn’t have any type of spin move like the others.

The levels are the same no matter who you pick and are all very large with multiple paths. Each level also has a hidden bonus level tucked far away from the main paths. The only one I’ve found is a sky-surfing stage that requires you to collect a specific number of rings.

It’s a beautiful game graphically and there’s no problem seeing in dim lighting. Sound effects match what you’d expect in a Sonic game, but I have a few complaints with some instrument samples in the music.

Our Japanese correspondent Tonkatsu told me that "Either you get Chao raising or you don’t." The Tiny Chao Garden was a mystery to me at first, but lately I’ve caught myself playing with the stupid Chao more than playing the real game. You can feed them, pet them, play simple games with them, and that’s about it. It doesn’t seem like there’s much to do, but it’s sucking me in.

I haven’t gotten a chance to try out multi-player yet or the GCN link (which won’t be available until next week), but the modes seem promising. I’ll have a full review up soon after Sonic Adventure 2: Battle comes out for GameCube.
